VALUE OF EDUCATION-BASED ACTIVITIES AT ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL By: Casey Meile, CAA Roosevelt High School Sioux Falls, South Dakota INTRODUCTION Almost every high school in the United States offers some type of extracurricular activity, such as music, academic clubs, and sports. Roosevelt High School offers the opportunity for its 2,300-student population to participate in eighteen SDHSAA sanctioned sports programs, eight SDHSAA performing arts programs, thirty-four school sponsored clubs and thirty-six non-school sponsored clubs. Extracurricular activities provide an avenue for secondary schools to reinforce the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context, for this…show more content…
The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL Annual Report 1999-2000) believes that, “Interscholastic athletic and fine arts programs enrich the social skills education brings with qualities that help students succeed in the world around them. Those added qualities are the governing values of the League, the basis of high school activity programs—dignity, respect, equity, fairness, justice, sportsmanship and scholarship. Decades of research prove that students who participate in high school activities tend to have: • higher grade-point averages • better attendance records • lower dropout rates • fewer discipline problems than non-participating students • lower delinquency rates result from channeling adolescent energy into extracurricular activities National studies repeatedly report that high school activities: • build character • increase self-confidence • relieve tension • support classroom learning by generating school pride, a sense of community, and by nurturing a feeling of belonging that makes students want to achieve These studies also show that students who participate in athletic and fine arts programs are more likely to: • graduate from high school • stay off drugs • attend college • avoid unwanted pregnancies Still more statistics reveal that participation in activities encourages the aspirations of youth and provides young people with countless opportunities to
