“Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do.” This quote said by Elvis Presley highlights the importance that values have on one’s character. What someone values affects how they behave, think and, consequently, who they truly are. Throughout generations, there are often various values that Young Adults share. In Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson, David appears to be a representation of the Young Adults in his generation. In Kidnapped, the young adults have numerous common values that determine who they are and how their lives play out. In Kidnapped, the Young Adults value themselves and being respected. This not only determines how they treat and take care of themselves, but how they react to other’s treatment of them. Young Adults in Kidnapped appeared to care for, respect and value themselves. On page 21, the text states, David asserts that he was taught to have pride in himself and would not stand to be disrespected. David and other young adults in his generation value themselves and do not tolerate being disrespected, even by their superiors. The author states on page 33, David is excessively proud of himself and his abilities. This pride causes David to think he can assume control over his uncle, and eventually results in his own kidnapping.
