The University of Chicago’s campus is better than Vanderbilt’s. The campus in Chicago is superior because of the quality of the buildings. When the college was originally built, the architects used a specific kind of material that aged quickly in order to make the structures appear to be older than they actually were. At Vanderbilt, the outer surfaces of the classrooms look like any other establishments in the area. There is nothing to distinguish the university’s property from private businesses. At the other school, there is also a famous library enclosed by a glass dome, showing the futuristic as well as historic components of the design. The better school is the one in northern Illinois because Chicago has many more activities available.
They all labeled downtown El Paso’s buildings. I looked at them, lost for I had no knowledge of what they were talking about. I was still just a bird hatching from the shell. I turned left and there it was, classroom A1518. The two large, dark wooden doors were opened and on top of them was the sign “ARCHITECTURE”. I stood there with my breath taken away from me. “So… This is it. This is why you came into Northwest. This is your purpose” I took a deep breath, slowly exhaled, and continued on forward. Inside was a large room with computers on most of the side walls and desks the size of tables were located in the middle. All of the other students’ eyes were on me. I got even more nervous. They probably asked themselves if I was lost because of course, who would expect a 15-year-old to take an architecture college class? I walked slowly towards the 2nd desk in the front row. I sat in the tall black chair as the sound of the AC and the computer fans grew bigger and bigger. I’ve never heard anymore silence in my life. I opened my backpack’s side apartment and took out my pencil and place it on the side of the dark brown desk. I looked around and saw another room inside of
During my return trip to downtown Tucson I visited my favorite place and the one which I felt held the most power. The Cadence apartment gives anyone who enters it the feel of a five-star hotel. The apartments gave the ambience of upper class with its constant cleaning crew working to keep it in prestige condition and multiple amenities only the nicest and most powerful of places would possess. When entering, you are welcomed to a long all white hallway with multiple fireplaces and flat screen televisions. The all white building gives the impression of a sleek and clean upper class building. After continuing down the hall, you are greeted by a fully equipped gym and a large pool and hot tub. Overall, with grand sweeping hallways, five star amenities, and classy atmosphere, The Cadence possesses much of the attributions that lead a building to be architecturally powerful.
Two examples that I find especially thought provoking are the Danziger studio and the Goldwyn Library. Built to blend into the local surroundings, the luxury residence was given a humble, rough exterior. Davis' explains that the rough exterior of the architecture reflects the underlying social phenomenon of "repression, surveillance and exclusion"(Davis, 224) that collectively forms the "fragmented, paranoid spatiality"(Davis, 229 ) that LA embodies. Moreover, The house's "camouflage"(Davis, 229 ) exterior creates a stark contrast to its luxurious interior, which places further emphasis on the exclusion and barrier between the "opulent"(Davis, 256) interior and the "rough"(Davis, 224 ) environment. I find Davis' assessment of the Daziger studio particularly agreeable and accurate as I truly believe that an architecture, its purpose and characteristic, sheds light to not only its physical environment but also its social environment, something that might not necessarily be as apparent. On the other hand, I find Davis' assessment of the Goldwyn library rather exaggerated. Judging from photos taken, the fifteen foot security wall is not as grotesque and 'fear-imposing' as Davis puts it. Davis described the library as "baroquely fortified...menacing...bizarre"(Davis, 246) and "paranoid"(Davis, 251). Although security and 'vandal-proof'' maybe, as Davis suggested, the initial goal of the design, I do not believe that it is as exaggerated as Davis
Going to college is the key to a good future career. It’s hard to decide on which school to attend. Many people end up going to one of their state schools.Trying to decide which school is better, Iowa State University or University of Iowa. They are both good schools, but they have their differences and their similarities in location, enrollment and class sizes, tuition and cost, and degree programs.
Geoffrey Wright, an El Paso architect, describes Henry Trost’s grand design of El Paso High School incorrectly as a “renaissance revival” in a 1991 article in the Austin American-Statesman. Although he was mistaken in this observation, he made another observation that was correct, which is that the eastern façade of El Paso High School’s six humongous columns, on top of it’s bases and adorned with acanthus leaves, is most definitely a design of the Classical Revival style. He also went on to state, “[T]he style adopted the best parts of Greek and Italian architecture centuries later.”
People drive past El Paso High School every day and never bother to admire the beautiful architecture of the 100-year-old building that towers above them. I’ve always thought it was a striking building but, like many other El Pasoans, had no idea about the history behind why it was built the way it was. A couple of books and a nice long look at the school, I now have a better understanding and appreciation for Henry Trost’s marvelous works. Geoffrey Wright, an El Paso architect, describes Henry Trost’s grand design of El Paso High School as a “renaissance revival” in a 1991 article in the Austin American-Statesman, which wasn’t entirely accurate. Although he was inaccurate in this remark, he made another observation that was spot-on,
If I had to go to one of the main colleges in Iowa, I would choose to go to the University of Iowa because I have always wanted to become a doctor, and this college has a great program for a medical degree.
The University of Arkansas Fort Smith (UAFS) was established in 1928 as an extension of the public school system in Fort Smith, Arkansas. It was known originally as Fort Smith Junior College until 1950, and it initially only occupied 15 acres. Today, the UAFS campus has approximately thirteen buildings in which classes are held in. There are several buildings that are on campus that do not hold classrooms for learning such as the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center, the Boreham Library, the Business Center, the Recreation and Wellness Center (RAWC), and the Lion’s Den. There is a total of 66 campus buildings and facilities on and off campus, and there is 1.16 million building square feet maintained by UAFS (“Why UAFS”). Each building on campus illustrates something different; there are several buildings that are new to our campus also. One building that is not new to our campus, but certainly grabs the eye of many students by either a positive or negative way is the building Gardner. Gardner is one of the oldest buildings on the UAFS campus, but besides the unusual layout that can be an inconvenience at times, the building has history, character, and beauty that out ways the negative any day.
Oh FInally it is you,Rockefeller. My boss have been wating on you. Follow me SIr to his office which is right here. Vanderbilt servant welcomed and guided rockefeller to Vanderbilt's OFfice Vanderbilt and John D.rockefeller makes a deal and the deal was that Rockefeller was going to fill Vanderbilt daily with sixty carloads of oil at the rate of 1.65 a barerel.
The University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University both have beautiful campus’s. The University of Illinois is located in the middle of Urbana and Champaign area. For those who may not know where this is, it is surrounded by cornfields. Of course the two cities are right there, but once the city limits come to an end, the only view is cornfields and nothing else. However, getting over the fact that it is surrounded by cornfields, the campus itself is amazing. Since the University is quite old, the buildings have kept the same architect as before. There are twenty-two university resident halls and fifteen private housing buildings. The dorm halls are not too far away from the academic buildings, but on a cold, winter day it may feel like the buildings are miles away. During the winter, they receive a lot of snow. The weather at the University is similar to Chicago's weather. Besides the weather, at the center of the campus there is a quad and a bell tower. The quad is unusual. When they first built the campus, in the center of the building, there was a grass covered area. As the college grew, this became the quad. The quad is used for students to walk to class and relax in. The University noticed as the students were walking through the quad, the grass was getting worn out and just turning to mud. So, the University decided to put sidewalks where they noticed the
In Greenville, Illinois, the local college campus holds a hidden gem: the Richard W. Bock Sculpture Museum. The museum holds hundreds of pieces of work by Bock and those associated with him, including architectural drawings by Frank Lloyd Wright. The house itself is historical, as it is the home of the founder of Almira College, the predecessor (precursor?) of Greenville College (GC). Built in the mid-1850s, it went through a major renovation in 2005 in which efforts were made to remain true to the original design and decor of the home. One room of the home has been set aside to house artifacts from the founders along with items from the beginning years of the school.
The two buildings also differ in the way they interact with the city, since they have vastly differing neighbors. The main building is centered on Adams street and faces the Loop, the busiest area of the city. Flanking the main entrance are two large, bronze, lions that seem to protect the building from the city, while still allowing visitors to enter and exit the museum. The new Modern Wing, however, faces Chicago’s Millenium Park. The face of the building along the park side is a large face of windows. So, while the old building is trying to shut out the city to create a space for itself, the Modern Wing is opening itself up to let the park
For instance, the Hosaeus Fitness Center was built and finished much later than that of Romney Gym located right across from each other at Montana State University. The same can be said about the University of Virginia’s array of buildings for their health system . According to the University of Virginia’s Brief History page, while Thomas Jefferson did implement an education program, the buildings themselves were not constructed and finished until November 7, 1984 (W., 2015). This health care area has undergone many changes to this day, as apparent by the way the buildings look and are constructed. In terms of scale, these health care buildings are massive compared to the other nearby buildings that house classes and have a more futuristic look to them by way of their design.
Everyone already knows that Iowa State University is one of the most beautiful campuses in America, but what makes this particular campus stand out? What is Iowa State’s highlight, the tip of the iceberg. What comes to mind is the Reiman Gardens because although it is a small part of Iowa State’s campus, it is part of something much larger and complex that is usually hidden from the crowd. As a matter of fact, I believe most people do not even know that the garden exists. To explain the value of the Reiman Gardens, I will be focusing on the garden’s history, the role it plays in Iowa State, how it is connected to Iowa State’s mission statement, and how it pertains to Iowa State as a land-grant university.
My first image is Syracuse University and it represents a college or university. My first question or subtopic is what is the definition of college and I believe this is a general representation of how a college looks. It shows a broad overview of the campus and I chose this picture instead of others because it stood out to me. As a high school senior I went on numerous amount of college tours; and if the college campus looks appealing it made me think twice about attending. If the buildings are old fashioned, and the campus doesn’t look nice then a student may not want to attend that school.
