Vanier describes loneliness as the taste of death. To me, loneliness has a flavor of inner dissatisfaction, restlessness of heart and most of all, absence of love. Thankfully all my experiences of loneliness were short lived, but from my limited exposure, I understand it to be a state where one experiences emotions at the deepest level for one is not clouded by the pretense of society. This inner isolation is a two edged sword that has lead me both to creativity as well as perpetual inner torments. The suffering is derived from a certain guilt, a feeling of “I am not worthy of existing”. It is with these tinted glasses that a lonely person views the world; where they reject a helping hand, and are governed only by inner pains. Having overcome

People are considered to be social beings, yet, again and again, they seek to falsify the claims of civility, and show themselves as the detached individuals they tend to be. In his novella, “Of Mice and Men,” John Steinbeck designed several faulty pairings that display the true disparity and detachment that are proven to be a part of every relationship in the story. Through the associations of the main characters, Lennie and George, along with several other characters within the narrative, Steinbeck exposes the root of 1930’s relationships in promises, loneliness, and a basic need for companionship, rather than any true fondness- a junction that can easily be nullified.

Loneliness is a strong theme in the short story The Minister’s Black Veil written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. Today, being alone doesn’t really mean being lonely, or is it always feeling gloomy about something in life. In the article, Resolutions of Aloneliness describes that loneliness can also be seen on a more positive side; “Solitude represents the more positive aspects of one’s loneliness. Solitude is either a physical state/or a state of mind. It is most often used for getting in touch with self, for rejuvenation, and as an aid to creativity” (Kubistant 462). Some people, usually introverts, absolutely are fond of having time to themselves and are totally satisfied with isolation. However, extroverts may want some alone time to themselves each day to follow-up and bounce back from a disappointing event in life. On the other hand, loneliness is a different form of isolation. When a person feels lonely, they’re not in solitary by preference, and they feel sad or empty because of it. Some people may feel cut-off, or disconnected from other people, and have no one we can really talk to. Even when we’re surrounded by others, we can still be lonesome if we don’t have a form of association with them. Mr. Hooper, in the short story, represents a vivid state of loneliness in his mind. The black veil that he wore worried the people in his village, even
“Pray that your loneliness may spur you into finding something to live for, great enough to die for” (Dag Hammarskjold). Loneliness is a scary thing. As a child, I was very shy and timid and I suffered from it. My life was sheltered by my parents and I desperately wanted a sibling. Along with my parents, the private school I had gone to all my life never gave me the experience of stranger interaction. The thought of starting a conversation with someone I have never met made me drench in sweat. I dreaded the day of going to a public high school. Never in my dreams would I have imagined how it would affect my life and mold me into the person I am today.

Loneliness can exist even on the bustling streets of New York City or the cramped cabin of a passenger airliner, because within all of us there is a form of loneliness no amount of people can cure. Within the novel The Waitress Was New, by Dominque Fabre, loneliness is presented to us in the form of a barman named Pierre who works at a busy metro café in a suburb of Paris. Pierre who is a professional at the art of listening leads a simple existence outwardly but internally he is plagued by loneliness that has stemmed from his profession, age, and his past regrets/turmoil’s. Being a barman Pierre’s job is to converse with people lending them his ear daily, though rarely do the patrons reciprocate. Over the years Pierre has developed a wit and collective personality in dealing with problems, this is helpful when his bosses are struggling with marital issues that threaten the restaurant. Though at the end of the day Pierre doesn’t have a wife or family to go home vent to which helps alleviate the stress of the day for most people. The only person he has consistently is himself which leads him to believe that he is sufficient with bottling up daily problems. The reason for this loner mentality is because Pierre has become to believe that he is at the end of his life and that he is simply a cog in the machine of process. His mindset is a direct result from his past, with the loss of his mother (the only close family he had), his divorce (which kids were not conceived), his
Oftentimes, people confuse loneliness with the state of being alone. When looking at the overall big picture, it is easy to forget that loneliness is temporary. People are not alone because even back in primitive times, they bore a natural instinct to strive for companionship in order to survive. Human imagination creates companions in cases of extreme loneliness which contradicts the state of being alone. Due to societal and family standards, others in society make it practically impossible to be alone. Mankind often goes through life without realizing the overwhelming amount of human contact and support. People are never alone, they are just simply
