Vector Communications started as a one-woman-show, because of a request for help from an engineering firm. Laurna Godwin began working with the engineering firm on an upcoming public meeting and was soon introduced to Jessica Perkins. Jessica offered Laurna her help with the public meeting. After the meeting’s success, it was clear that the two women worked well together and that there was a need for this type of work. Therefore, Vector Communications was created in 1998. Soon after the company creation the core competencies of the company were established. Laurna and Jessica decided on public engagement, strategic planning, media relations, event planning and video production as what would be the company’s main focus. The S.T.A.R.R. (Sustainable, Transparent, Results-Oriented, Accessible, and Representative) Treatment method was also created, which was used during public engagement projects. The S.T.A.R.R. method was created in order to ensure that the public would have a thorough understanding and be able to provide input on projects. With over 20 years of experience from both Laurna and Jessica, the company grew quickly and five more employees were hired. Seventy to eighty percent of the projects that Vector Communications works on fall under the core competency of public engagement.
