Although Venezuela is in a deplorable state of poverty and ruin due to the corruption and fiscal irresponsibility of its government, a regime change could return Venezuela to its former glory by opening its borders to foreign investing and capitalizing on its environmental landscapes to revive the Venezuelan tourism industry.
The current administration has systematically driven the country into poverty and ruin by consistently failing to meet the needs of its citizens and by continuing to implement policies that erode the economy. For instance, the Venezuelan administration’s mismanagement of funds by corrupt government officials resulted in a failure to repay debts to China, which in turn caused Venezuela’s largest creditor to cease any further business deals with the same. Moreover, government officials including Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, have grown their net worth while the country’s inflation rose a staggering 700% in 2016 as the vast majority (approximately 85%) of the population lived in poverty. The corruption and poor leadership throughout the government is prominent to the point that the US Department of the Treasury issued sanctions against President Maduro after holding illegitimate elections to retain power. Additionally, anytime the population rises in protest, even if peaceful, Maduro’s government has reacted by deploying military forces, often resulting in blatant violations and abuse of human rights that has led to countless unnecessary civilian deaths. The Venezuelan government’s fiscal irresponsibility, bad economic policy, and limitless corruption has created a financial void of such magnitude that, not even the country with the largest oil reserves in the world can procure critical medications, food, or basic necessities for 9/10 of the population. Additionally, hospitals are powerless to administer care; they are underfunded to the point where patients themselves must bring their basic necessities such as toilet paper and medications prior to being admitted into medical facilities. Even simple medications such as antibiotics, cough medicine or eye-drops have to be shipped and sometimes smuggled into the country because corrupt customs officials illegally confiscate the
Cuba is a communist nation still present from the cold war era when Russia and Cuba had ties together. The government in Cuba is very corrupt and the officials take bribes from other officials or regular citizens in Cuba. Political corruption in Cuba is a very big issues. hI believe that all government is corrupt in some way, but it seems like Communist nations are more corrupt than capitalist nations like the U.S
Also, there isevidence that access to medical care by prisone! rs is intentionally withheldfrom prisoners of conscience, and other prisoners that criticized the Cubangovernment. Amnesty International reports that suspected critics of thegovernment are being harassed with threats, eviction, loss of employment, andeven short-term incarceration. Even more disturbing is that these violationsare merely a fraction of the true number of human rights breaches that theCuban government is guilty of committing (“Amnesty International 2002Report”). But the human rights violations are not the only reason actionneeded to be taken towards Cuba.
Tulia, a small town in Texas of just under five-thousand people, is a frightening example of how the judicial system is governed solely by racism as well as one corrupt man’s word. In 1999, nearly ten percent of the town’s African American population was arrested in a single drug bust. Of the forty-six people arrested, thirty-eight were African-American, furthermore all were convicted. The remaining seven arrested where know to associate more with the black community than the white in Tulia as well. With the towns income levels averaging at or below the poverty line, most arrested could not afford to hire a good attorney that cared or had the time to care, left therefore with one provided by the state. Consequently, convictions were up to ninety years in jail for allegedly selling three and a half grams, more commonly known as an eight ball, of cocaine in drug-free zones. In was only on appeals, that the convictions where revoked on insubstantial evidence.
When Christopher Columbus discovered the coast of Venezuela, he thought he had encountered an earthly paradise, today that grace land is ravaged by famine, inflation, scarcity, violence, social and political conflicts; “social implosion [being] driven by economic collapse, caused by shockingly self-destructive policy making” (Toro, 1). Venezuela’s antidemocratic government and its lack of foresight has created a severe economic crisis crumbling health care system and a lack of basic necessities and is jailing innocent people who object.
The Progress movement or as many refer to as the Progressive era, was a time frame where Americans joined in varying groups to advocate reform across the United States. To elaborate, Progressives believed in widespread change for child labor, industrialization, government, racial reform, and women’s rights. Countless stories of corruption in these areas were brought to light in the Progressive era mostly due to the published writings of Muckrakers. Muckrakers, were journalists who wrote for popular magazines that attempted to expose corrupt political activities from their investigative journalism. Furthermore, I will discuss and compare these groups and their attempts for changes in the rights of child labor, women, acknowledgment of corrupt government practices, racial relations, and industrialization reform.
In recent years, an increasing number of professors, commentators, journalists, and teens on social media have claimed that capitalism has failed. What usually follows are suggestions to usher in a new wave of socialism, as if the chaos in Venezuela is somehow non-existent or something truly desirable.
In Venezuela, in ancient times it was a paradise for natives who lived on its
In the American version of a democratic system, a handful of extremely wealthy individuals and large corporations control the political system. By "funding" or bribing the candidates, they directly influence the election and nominations of presidents, governors, senators and congress members. The money is used for campaign staff, door to door voting operations, and television advertising. The continued influence of the wealthy violates the basic principle of democratic political equality. This cynical political campaign has become part of the democratic system that the politicians are not even required to justify their action. Even though a truly democratic system is too perfect to exist, a corrupted political system destroys the hope for a system that has the public's interest in mind.
Issue: In Venezuela, the United Socialist Party (PSUV) has been in the power 18 years first with Chavez and them with Maduro, both elected by democratic elections. Now the country is divided into two significant groups Chavistas, people who support socialism and the actual president, and opposition, people anti-government and believe the corruption of the actual president. With this, the country is immersed in extreme violence, constants violations of humans rights and alarm power corruption. Additionally, some problems that the dictatorship produces like protests, the end of commercial relations with other countries, and the decreasing economy. The abuse of power leading to incrust the violations of humans right is the significant issue that Venezuela has to face today. This has an extended history that began in 1999, with the victory of Chavez in the name of socialism, but the break in the government started when Maduro raises in power and with the end of relations with the United States, who was the principal oil buyer. As well, the counting falling oil prices had decreased the Venezuela’s economy and limited the public inversion that the government used to do. With bad relations and an affected economy poverty, violence and discomfort with the government began. The corrupt power and constant violation of human rights are affecting in significant ways the country, particularly in the investment that the government
“Venezuela reads like a textbook example of the socialist end-game: Social implosion driven by economic collapse, caused by shockingly self-destructive policy making” (Toro 39). “Socialism of the 21st Century” in the end just did not work and had failed. The changes made to the constitution have created a government that runs inefficiently and gives the president too much power. Chavez mismanaged the country's income and caused inflation of the Bolivar Note. Chavez had good intentions, but his programs to help the impoverished failed because of poor management. These people that he was trying to help are now more hurt than they were before because money put into these programs was not used effectively. This money could have been used to invest in the oil reserves and other parts of the economy to set the country up for success. Food is hard to come by and the crime and murder rate continues to raise. The country in debt and cannot even buy imports to sell to its citizens. Venezuela will need outside help if it is to recover from the situation caused by Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro. The only reason Chavez remained popular in Venezuela is because the economy was doing well in the beginning and he was able to control the media so that the public opinion of him was kept
In the present day immigration into Venezuela is welcomed and rather easy. The country continues to be a “magnetic pole” of sorts for immigrants. A number of reasons create this attraction including the simplicity of migration, ease of becoming an entrepreneur, the current political situation, and access to quality health care. According to 2010 World Bank statistics only 521,500 Venezuelans lived abroad while 1,007,400 people immigrated to the country. Venezuela is clearly a haven for immigrants. However, not all citizens are content with this fact and choose to emigrate elsewhere. A small percentage of the population, most typically those falling into the upper-middle class to upper class distinctions, have expressed discontent
International organizations must urge the government of Venezuela to conform to Venezuela's duty to assure its citizens’ health and food certainty and to disclose domestic circumstances to the international community.
According to James Painter in his BBC News article “Latin America faces year of change”, Latin America suffers from social violence, kidnapping, drug trafficking, child pornography, lack of women’s rights, and little accountability over the region’s law makers and authorities which can lead to government corruption (para. 12). Government corruption can be defined as political power used by government leaders for private gain and to maintain their power as a government official. Most of the times these corrupt politicians in Latin America say they are accomplishing apprehension of criminals to the best of their abilities when, in reality, they commit the same multitude of crimes. Politicians are able to maintain their power as a result of
With an economy dominated by the production of oil, Venezuela has enjoyed the highest standard of living in Latin America. In spite of its success in the oil industry, agriculture and manufacturing also play important roles in Venezuela’s economy. With this in mind, it would seem as though Venezuela’s economic state has flourished. Rather, it has suffered from the effects of political influence, corruption, and poor economic management. The distribution of wealth across Venezuela has caused the elite to benefit at the cost of the working people. This is mainly due to the economic and political structure of the country. Even with the plentiful resources Venezuela possesses, it is constantly being threatened by political instability,
As you can see the death rates are not high, and the birth rates are increasing each year. The infant mortality rate, in total is 12.5 deaths. 1,000 live births. (Venezuela Demographics) The life expectancy after birth in total is 75.8 years. So, providing health care for the elderly is scarce. The major infectious diseases are very high. The food or waterborne diseases included are bacterial diarrhea and hepatitis A. Venezuela has been at risk with HIV for a decade, and it is just increasing. The total people living with HIV/AIDS are 107,300 and the total deaths are 3,300 in 2015. There are limit condoms, birth control, and more to the Venezuelans. The population is growing, and it is getting hard for the government to provide these qualities to the
