To what extent does the narrator feel that he has to take vengeance? Revenge is one of the most powerful sensations a person can experience. In “The Cask of Amontillado,” Poe uses the characters and the setting to portray the major theme of the story, which is revenge. The author utilizes the main character to demonstrate the desire for revenge as a consequence of an affront. Each sentence of the narrative leads the reader to be aware of what is going to happen at the end of the story without revealing it until the action actually occurs. There are many reasons why the main character, Montresor, may have wanted to avenge himself, yet the reader does not know about it and has to engage in the story to “sympathize” and understand why Montresor carried out what happened. The reader does not know this detail, however, it is quite meaningful that Montresor told the story himself after 50 years. Possibly he is confessing his crime, feeling proud and satisfied with how his plan turned out. The narrator does not seem to regret what he did because he never mentions feeling guilty nor ashamed. Even though the reader does not know why he narrates this anecdote after half a century later, it is recognizable that his purpose was accomplished, he avenged himself. Poe, as well, uses first person narration to illustrate the victimizer’s perspective. This is a way for the author to support his storyline, and for the reader to identify himself, in some way, with the character. The reader can also familiarize with the narrator’s position and thoughts. It is a helpful method for the reader to know how Montresor feels and how he is planning his vengeance. Besides this, the reader can picture Montresor’s tone and mood. Most importantly, one can notice that the narrator is focused on what he did and not on why he did
