In this research paper, I am going to discuss about Veterinary Medicine, the history behind of Veterinary Medicine, what jobs are associated with Veterinary Medicine and the benefits veterinary medicine has for humans and animals. Veterinary Medicine is wide field in and of itself covering all animal species both domesticated and wild, which can affect different species. It wasn’t until the Ancient Romans that treatment for diseased animals was discovered”. After the Romans, the largest advancement did not come until the 1700’s the treatment of animals was solely done by blacksmiths. There was little knowledge about disease and how to best treat them. The development of veterinary science and the founding of the first School of Veterinary Medicine in Lyons-France helped to further the field. This was brought about thru understanding the anatomy of animals and even people. Initially the Veterinarian profession was centered in horses and this remained the focus for many years influenced by the needs of the Armies during this time. However, over time the interested of the profession spread to cattle and other livestock, then to dogs and now to companion and exotic animals. Preventing disease and healing animals is at the heart of what veterinarians do. But they also do so much more”. This world is filled with so many career opportunities within the Veterinary Medicine, here are just a few: Animal Behaviorists, Veterinarians, Researchers, Public Health Officials, Pet Groomers, Dog Breeders and Veterinary Technicians. As with all of these jobs listed, you can decide specialize in one field such as being a Veterinarian that only treats equine or have a mixed animal practice to allow for the care of several different species. As an example, Veterinary Technicians can work in all areas of veterinary medicine. They work closely with the Veterinarian, restrain animals, preform certain procedures and tests, administer treatments, monitor patients, and much more. Currently Veterinary medicine is a very valuable and critical field. Without health animals, both domestic and wild, the world would be a much different place. Our food supply could be greatly reduced due to disease. We rely on animals for meat, dairy and eggs. Some animals can carry germs that can be shared with people.
