I chose the career of a Vet Technician. This job is often confused with the veterinarian or veterinary technologist. These two fields are totally different than a vet technician. Veterinarian required eight years of schooling, where the Veterinary technologist requires a bachelor degree in applied science. The job of an veterinary technician is to provide nursing care and assist surgeries for animals. Think of it as a human nurse, and a doctor, the vet tech assist the veterinarian in diagnosing illness and injuries. Some other jobs a veterinary technician might have would be preparing an animal for a surgery like a scrub with germicidal soap, sterilizing the surgical utensils, setting up a room

When people look back at their lives, a lot of them would like to think that they made a difference. One of these ways is by caring for an individual who could not take care of themselves. It would bring this person a sense of happiness and great relief knowing that they have done something to change an outcome, or potentially save a life. "Being a vet tech is a rewarding and life changing expierence" (Holmes 46) . Not only is being a vet tech rewarding and life changing, but it can help the world become a better place by saving one animal at a time. For someone who loves animals and spending time with them, being a vet technicians is the most suitable career choice.

My understanding of a credentialed veterinary technician is they are essentially a “nurse” to a Veterinarian. They are expected to do anything from assisting in surgery, managing anesthesia, drawing blood, administering medications, taking x-rays, cleaning teeth, interacting with clients, and so much more. They must be familiar with many different animal species and have the ability to restrain them. A Vet Tech must also deal with “bad days,” when an animal cannot be saved. As upsetting as this can be, ideally the good days outweigh the bad. Wherever there is a Veterinarian, there is a need for a Veterinary Technician. On Friday, January 25,2018 I interviewed Amanda Martz. She is a Licensed Veterinary Technician at Savannah Animal Hospital in Lewes Delaware. She studied in the Veterinary Technician Program at Delaware Technical Community College, after her completion of the course she passed the exam and received her license to practice.

As technology and pet ownership grow, the need for veterinary technicians is increasing. In 2012, 84,000 thousand veterinary technician positions were available. It is projected by 2022, 109,800 thousand jobs will be open (“Technican Summary” 2014). According to The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of veterinary technologists and technicians is projected to grow 30 percent from 2012 to 2022, much faster than the average for all occupations” (2014). Since technology in the veterinary field is progressing, the job projection rate is increasing. New positions for technicians include surgery, emergency medicine, and dentistry.

Being a veterinary has its responsibilities and they have to be followed by everyone in the clinic or workplace to make things simple and keep it a good organized place to work . It is way more difficult and not as simple, everyone just thinks that being a vet is just about taking care of animals and that's it, but it's really more than that. Also being a veterinary technician is similar to a veterinarian but they have different duties. When becoming a veterinary technician, one of the utmost important steps is to take appropriate courses in high school and college and afterwards get the correct licenses and certifications. For those, each state is a little different in which certifications they require in order to pursue a career as a veterinary technician. Whether you are planning to be a LVT (licensed veterinary technician), RVT (registered veterinary technician) or CVT (certified veterinary technician), depends on which state the tech lives in. Taking a look down memory lane, I can remember having a love for animals from elementary until now, I have nursed and taken care of animals for so long On the day I graduated high-school I was assured I wanted to become a veterinary technician. I wanted to become a veterinary technician because the passion and love I have for animals through having my own pets I experienced giving my dogs medications, giving my rabbits antibiotic shots, clipping nails, and cleaning ears.

There is a lot of hard work put into this job, maintaining the health of all the animal patients. The overall job description of a veterinarian is a doctor who, “care[s] for the health of animals and work[s] to improve public health. They diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, and other animals” (Veterinarian). Vets also provide emergency care for injured animals as well as provide euthanization for animals unable to be treated effectively. There are several different kinds of vets, each with different daily tasks and patients to work on. The type of vet everyone usually first thinks of is a Clinical Vet, also known as a Companion animal Veterinarian. They treat regular household pets such as dogs, cats, rabbits, pigs, etc. This type of vet’s work environment usually includes being in private clinics and animal hospitals most of the time but can travel to farms and homes if needed. This is the most common field veterinarian students pursue. Another type is Equine Veterinarian. This type of vet focuses just on treating and caring for horses. They spend most of their times on ranches, and also at places like horse racing tracks and shows. Large Animal Veterinarians treat large farm animals such as horses, cows, sheep and pigs.
