Video Game Violence Has a Negative Effect on Today's Youth

One of the main causes that make individuals more violent in real life is playing video games. Most violent video games show violence as a positive thing not a negative one. When aggression occurs in a video game, the player is not punished but awarded. This shows them that violence is okay and that if they try that situation in real life, they will also be rewarded. “In a study of video games, in 98 percent of them aggression went unpunished” ( Studies have shown that children that play teen- mature rated games for least 40 minutes a day may witness over 180 incidents of aggression per day or 5400 incidents per month. In some video games, individuals are allowed to do anything they want and get away with it without being punished by law. For example, the game GTA4,which is a stimulation game which allows players do anything they want like rob banks and purchase illegal prostitutes. This is showing children and teenagers that robbing banks is a good thing and that nothing bad comes from that. Studies have shown that high levels of violence in video games have been linked to delinquency, fighting at school and violent criminal behavior. This includes self-reported assault and robbery.

Unrealistic video game violence is not safe for young adults and older children. Often parents and public policy makers perceive cartoon and fantasy violence as safe for children. However, experimental studies with students from college have shown that increased aggression after being exposed to clearly unrealistic and fantasy violent video games. At least one of the recent studies found significant increases in aggression in college students after playing E-rated, which are suitable for everyone, violent video games.

The game Grand Theft Auto has sold more than 35 million copies, with worldwide sales approaching $2 billion.
