A rather new debate in the world of sports is, “are video gamers considered athletes?” There has been a massive increase in the amount of people playing video games in recent years. The games themselves have evolved to demand much more attention and skill than required than in the years of pong. Video game tournaments are becoming more popular than ever. The number of competitors can extend into the thousands with even more in attendance. Monetary prizes have also reached millions of dollars to the winner. ESPN, the nations most viewed and trusted sports network has in the past partnered with video game developing companies to air tournaments live. Despite the massive increase in popularity, many still refute that video gamers are athletes and the games can’t be considered a sport. “It’s not a sport — it’s a competition. Chess is a competition. Checkers is a competition….Mostly, I’m interested in doing real sports,” said ESPN President John Skipper when asked about esports. In a 2013 episode of HBO's Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, columnists …show more content…
To answer these questions I ask myself what criteria is required for an activity to be considered a ‘sport’? Or somebody an athlete? According to Dictionary.com, sport is defined as, “an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc.” Playing video games is indeed a physical motor skill, and the activity requires finely tuned and trained fine motor skills, reaction times, vision, and mental acuity. But does this make gamers ‘athletes’? Well also according to Dictionary.com, athletes are defined as, “a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical
Sports are something that everyone in the world, regardless of age, sex, or nationality, can enjoy. Whether it's a child playing in his first t-ball game or a professional athlete swimming in the Olympics and everyone in between, sports can connect almost everyone. Fan support and overall devotion for athletic competition has raised professional athletes to superstars and national icons; Super Bowl Sunday is a national holiday to some, and sports are one of the largest moneymakers in the economy.
One of the activities on the list that I thought was the furthest thing from a sport was Pigeon Racing. Even though I believed Pigeon racing to have incorporated many of the key components of a sport such as competition, a governing bodies, benefits, and strategy; it fails to meet the other requirements. One requirement that is not met is maintaining a certain level of physical and mental activity. In this particular sport the performer is completely dependent upon the pigeon to compete. By doing so this completely removes an athlete from the sport and eliminates any human chance in affecting the overall outcome. Instead of a sport I would categorize this as a recreational activity that is fun to watch and be involved in. I believe that an activity that relies solely on an animal performance cannot be considered to be a true sport.
One sport that would be taken off the list is a big one, tennis, it might seem surprising but because the average person who might not follow tennis would be confused by watching a match and seeing that one person’s score is love thus being stricken from the list of sports because the scoring is unclear. Another would be fishing, because coaching during a competition is not required while one is sitting in a boat or on a dock waiting for a tug on the line. Bowling also does not require a coach. I would not consider poker a sport either, because it does not take a lot of skill to play only a good eye whereas a game like water polo player needs to have skill or else they would be disqualified immediately. Poker is driven by luck; a top notch poker player has nothing to do with the hand they are dealt they can only bluff till the end of the hand. I think that the guidelines that make an activity a sport are and always will be lenient because everyone has differing opinions and what they like and will watch, so we all can only have our own opinions and hope that others will

In 2011 Golden Tate, Detroit Lions wide receiver, tweeted that driving a car does not make someone athletic. In 2013 Donovan McNabb, retired NFL quarterback, made a comment that he did not consider Jimmie Johnson an athlete. The remarks were fueled when Jimmie Johnson, six-time champion in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series, was nominated for Best Male Athlete at ESPN’s Espy Awards in 2011. Merriam-Webster defines an Athlete as a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina (“Athlete” 1). Auto Racing is recognized as a sport by the Association of IOC Recognised International
Sports are very vital. They offer a lifestyle, an occupation, and even a dream. Sports require physical activity and skill in which a team or an individual compete against others for entertainment. As David G. McComb comments in "Sports in World History", "there is a high degree of training, investment, and coaching, along with spectators, rules, publicity, and institutional control that come along with these activities." While participating in sports, it is required to be able to undertake a difficult situation and perform the best out of it. Sports are definitely more than just a game.
A cheerleader, by definition, is a person who is a member or of a group who shout out special songs or chants to encourage the team and entertain the crowd during a game. Yet, you see cheerleaders doing more than just standing around and being pretty in movies, television shows, and even their own games. They throw people in the air and catch them, they do flips, jumps. They have their own competitions. But why is it still not considered a sport to many?

Video games should be considered a sport because they require specialized skills, teamworks, and requires focused or sustained practice to maintain skill all though theyŕe not physical, throw any sport you want at these three things and video games have them too.
Sports of old were merely competitive activities rooted in heroism and romanticism. Sports activities today, however, have no such innocence or simplicity. Currently in America, the activities that make up our sports culture is not only the competitive events themselves but the processes and issues that underlie and surround them. Entwined in our sports culture is the giant business of mass broadcasting. Indeed, sports and the media go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly, like Mickey and Minnie, Darth Vader and Luke. They are intertwined and depend on each other to continue to grow. Sports media includes television, radio, magazines, newspapers, books, films, and, now, most importantly, social media devices provided by the
Competitive gaming, also known as e-sports, is becoming a worldwide phenomenon. With huge events and tournaments that are watched by millions of passionate fans, many people are beginning to question whether playing video games can be considered a real sport. Even though e-sports may not be as physically demanding as traditional sports like football and basketball, the structure, strong fan base and the requirements to seriously contend in the competitive gaming scene legitimize it as a “real” sport.
Gaming should be considered a sport because of how professional players get paid when they win. Tournaments are hosted for several games worldwide with big prize pools dished out. Cecilia Kang, an author of the Washington Post, explains that, “The Red Bull tournament
