Should Video Games Be Considered a Sport? “A contest or game in which people do certain physical activities according to a specific set of rules and compete against each other” (Merriam-Webster). This is often the definition of sports you will find no matter what dictionary you look in and it’s what professional video gamers have to go against every single day. Professional gaming or Esports has been around a long longer than people realize and only now has gained a ton of traction in popular media recently. This is mostly due to the new generation growing up with videogames being a large part of their childhoods, as opposed to the previous generations who found that same connection in traditional sports. This may just a be a generational thing but Esports The first official gaming tournament was held in October 19th, 1972 with the game Spacewar and it was dubbed “Intergalactic Spacewar Olympics” where the winner walked away with a yearlong subscription to Rolling Stone magazine (Electronic Games Magazine). By Bogdan Josic Fairfield High School Teacher: Mr. Curtis Contents Introduction The influence of technology throughout the 21st century has been significant, affecting every aspect of society, including sport. Technology has created an unofficial, esports (Electronic Sports), which has grown rapidly over the past 4 years, erecting various Tournaments and bringing in millions of viewers. Dayna Allen Mrs. Worsham English II 7November2017 ´´Should video games be considered a sport?´´ Do you consider video games as a sport? Personally, when I think of sports, I think of an activity that includes running, jumping, or using any kind of exercise. Also sports have to be able to have a team that can compete. However, when people say that playing video games is a sport; i would have to say it is not, because you don´t use any kind of physical activity. According to gamers; people who are very committed to their games and who are willing to succeed in them, they think that playing games is a sport, but since you don´t use physical activity, playing games is using as much work as making a beaded necklace. Now if you think about it, there
The word “sport” when used as a noun according to oxford dictionaries is defined as, “an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.” But what does that mean exactly? The definition of physical according to the same source is: “of or relating to the body as opposed to the mind.” but does that mean to literally and physically exert energy with movements? Or is something considered physical when the activity causes internal reactions, like for instance a raised pulse? Truthfully I do not consider esports to be an actual sport. There is a lot that goes into something being a sport and I do not agree with people that try and consider video games a sport.
Video games were created in the 1970’s (Online Collection). Video games have created new experiences for many people and have provided many new jobs. In fact, video games have advanced rapidly over the years. Video games are disliked by many people because people believe video games cause violence or find them dangerous, however, researchers have not proven video games not to cause violence. For example, a video game discussed immensely over the past year is called Pokémon Go; it is believed to be dangerous. Furthermore, many people question whether or not gaming is a sport. Video games are also proven to improve a person’s, preferably a child’s, vocabulary. Many job opportunities have opened due to gaming. Overall, when it comes to
Video Games have been around since the early 1960’s, increasing in popularity in the early 1970’s and 80’s and are now more popular and common than before. It forever changed the entertainment world. The phrase Video Game is defined as a game played by electronically manipulating images produced by a computer program on a television screen or other display screen. Gaming is defined as the action or practice of playing video games. Video games can refer to games played on game consoles such as the PlayStation, Wii and Xbox, or on computers. With its increasing reputation, its sales have continued to grow, as of 2015 total revenues for the video game industry in the U.S. hit $23.5 billion. Current research has shown that, “97 % of American adolescents aged 12–17 years play computer, web, portable or console video games” (Adachi p.1041). However, along with this increase of gaming has come increased controversy on its effects on society. The main reason for this controversy, is whether the content of video games changes the behavior and attitudes of a player negatively, which then effects society negatively. Before focusing on this controversial topic, the history behind what video games are, how they evolved and the efforts that go into making them, should be addressed.
Sports have been known to be for entertainment, profit, and winning. Some people think that games are necessary because of the competition that many sports like soccer or basketball or baseball have which are essential to play. But many people ruin the importance of sports, and there are also people
Playing video games are seen as an energizing part of the media scene and has encountered many extensions as recent times. There has been a higher amount of kids who utilize video games in many parts of the world, especially in the United States. Among kids in the United States,
Video games have been around since 1950s and have gone a long way from what they are today. They are in no doubt a big part of our society and with doing so they have been criticized by many. Video games come in different categories which include: action, racing, adventure,
Video games and people who play them are usually spoken of in a negative connotation because of the stereotype’s surrounding them. This is understandable because most games that people think about when they hear “video game” are the kind that involves sitting for hours on end and involving very little movement. “Aren't they all overweight for lack of physical activity, plus a steady diet of power drinks and junk food?” (Danforth, Health through gaming, 2011). This common way of thinking about the topic of gaming has been burned into a majority of the public’s mind through the media. The media, however, does not cover the side of gaming that is admittedly more hidden from those who do not search for the facts. There is a surplus of video games that are not recognized to be healthy or they are not recognized as video games because they are healthy. Although it is generally disparaged by many, gaming is a convenient and viable way for people to strengthen their body and their brain because gaming provides physical activity, it is used for education in households and schools, and it keeps you mentally stable.
Have you ever wondered why young people seem to get a better grip on technology than you used to at their age? One possible answer to this question is youth’s love for video games. Since their creation in the mid-twentieth century, video games have imposed themselves as an important components of the American culture and many other cultures worldwide. They take different forms from simple cell phone games like “Candy Crush” to more complex computer games such as “League of Legend,” one of the most popular online multiplayer game in America. Witnessing the popularity of video games at such a big scale, it is not surprising to question ourselves on the possible effects of this revolutionary technology on the young generation. It has become common for young people to enjoy those video games alone or with friends at any given moment of the day. Some researchers have concluded that this global hegemony that video games evoke can contribute to the development of the youth’s curiosity and knowledge. Others, however, have found a possible correlation between video games and juvenile violence. I strongly believe that, if used adequately, video games can be beneficial for students.
When the word ”sport” is brought up in conversation, people automatically think of someone sprinting toward the end zone with a football in their hands or someone shooting a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounds. Even the less recognized sports such as table tennis and archery are highlighted during the Olympic games. The last thing that people would call a sport is something that requires you to be decisive and have lightning-fast reflexes. It demands that you to put in multiple hours of practice every day, all while never moving from your chair or couch. Video gaming is an activity that is enjoyed by millions of kids, teens, and adults all around the world. However, for a slightly smaller group of people, video games are more than just a leisure activity. For some, video games are a job.
