Video Mediums and Childhood Obesity Childhood Obesity has now reached a critical level. The main reason for the growing number of obese children is inactivity. With obesity in children being related to many health issues, it is important that we not only stop the rise in childhood obesity, but reverse it. With their health at risk, it is imperative that we assure our children are in good physical shape and at healthy weight levels. There are more single parent households. When both parents are present in a household, in the majority of these families, both parents must work in order to make ends meet. So who will watch the kids while they play outside? These are valid arguments and all I have to say to this is, figure it out! If your child breaks a limb, you take them to be treated and as inconvenient as it is, you figure out how to bathe them around their cast. If your child has the chicken pox, you keep them home from school, find an alternative to daycare and help them fight the urge to scratch. Obesity is no different, other than the illnesses that can result from obesity are far worse than a broken leg or chicken pox. Therefore, we must make treating this as an illness a priority. There are numerous alternatives and we must all work at finding a solution. The television, computer and x-box are not babysitters and we need to stop using them as such. We need to stop our children from sitting in front of the television set and get them on their feet in the fresh air and sunlight. When being outdoors is simply not a possibility, make use of the gym at your local YMCA or your church, where they can play basketball, kickball, volleyball and the like. There are so many activities for our children to get involved in that are physical and fun. Most children would prefer physical games and activities. They just do not know what to do,
