Viewing A Change Disaster Through Change Perspectives Introduction Poorly managed organizational change can increase risk, budgets and damage reputations. Organizational change typically educes strong emotions because change interferes with the sense of security, as well as produces feelings of uncertainty (Barabasz, 2016). Employee’s reactions to imposed change, which can range from high turnover, low morale, an assiduous reduction in productivity, to wildcat or other strikes, perplexes many leaders. Leadership that develops strategies to manage the active and passive resistance can mitigate risk and minimize additional costs. Within 24 hours, 60 grounded flights caused British Airlines to lose over 100,000 customers and approximately 40 million pounds. Change Issue Two years before the implementation of the swipe card system, British Airways developed a broad, recovery program, Future Size and Shape, which was designed to modernize the airlines and improve the efficiency of resources. The program goal was to a implement a sweeping strategy to remake its business, which included cuts to the number and types of jets, reduction in employee numbers and ticket pricing options as well as utilization of standard software (Daniels, 2003). Prior to the strike, 13,000 jobs were cut and the airline was struggling with shortage of staff and a higher rate of absenteeism (Palmer, Duncan & Akin, 2009). With the implementation of the swipe card system, employees were facing overwork, anxiety about the future of their jobs, and concerns about split shifts and less pay. These fears led the employees to walk out on a wildcat strike. Key Issues and Recommendations Based on Change Perspectives British Airways employees received notice that they were to begin using the swipe card system five days before the change was to take effect.
