During WWII, in 1943 Polish soldiers from the 22nd Artillery Supply encountered an orphan boy. The company fed the boy, and when they investigated his pack that was moving on its own, they found a small Syrian brown bear whom had been orphaned as well after his mother had been shot by hunters. The soldiers decided to buy the young cub from the boy. The bear was fed condensed milk from old vodka bottles, and accepted into the 22nd Artillery Supply company and named Wojtek, meaning “joyful warrior.”
