Paving the way of Modern Art:
Van Gogh as a modern style icon
“Starry, starry night. Paint your palette blue and gray.”
Seems familiar? The excerpt above is from the lyrics of the song Vincent by Don Mclean. But what you don’t know is that there’s something enigmatic in this song. Given that, it is inspired from the painting The Starry night but it is also about the uncertain life and poignant death its painter - Vincent Van Gogh.
Born in 1853, a child who in his later years became an artist after realizing his true calling, the one who is unappreciated at his own time but has been a beacon of modern art today – Vincent Van Gogh, The son of a pastor, brought up in a religious and cultured atmosphere. Vincent lacked self – confidence

He sold only one painting, lived in poverty, malnourished and overworked. The money he had was supplied by his brother, Theo, and was used mostly for art supplies, coffee and cigarettes.
“I put my heart and my soul into my work, and have lost my mind in the process.”
– Vincent van Gogh
Van Gogh's finest works were produced in less than three years, eventually creating over 2,100 artworks, including 860 oil paintings, in the short span of his career. From watercolors to sketches to prints, he gravitated toward self-portraits, portraits, still lives and landscapes that are characterized by impulsive, gestural application of paint and symbolic colors to express subjective emotions. Thus, creating an incomparable fusion of form that contributed to the foundations of modern art.
Tragically, after just ten years of painting and producing some paintings, Vincent van Gogh took his own life in 1890, not knowing the acclaim his art would receive. “I have risked my life for my work, and it has cost me half my reason.”

The excerpt, shows how Van Gogh escaped from his troubles and gained popularity, but only after he was dead. Van Gogh was born on 1853, renamed after his stillborn older brother. ¨As a result, Vincent Van Gogh grew up near the haunting sight of a grave with his own name upon it.¨(par. 1) His parents weren’t around most of the time, as they were also busy dealing with his younger siblings. He felt lonely, while his mother believed that his talent might come to use once he got older. He spent time by himself, but slowly depended on art to share his thoughts. With Van Gogh's shared name upon a grave of which his stillborn brother’s laid, felt as a replacement to his parents, as well, he became
In 1880 at the age of 27, Van Gogh moved to Brussels began taking lessons on his own. He took some lessons from his cousin by marriage. He studied some books like Travaux des champs by Jean-Francois Millet and Cours de dessin by Charles Bargue. After completing his
Buchanan and Van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh, born in 1853, was a post-impressionist painter. Van Gogh struggled with a mental illness and remained fairly unknown as an artist throughout his life. It was not until after he took his own life at the age of 37 that his works came to light. Up until 1886, Van Gogh was strictly self-taught. He eventually decided he needed some professional training, so he enrolled in the Fine Arts Academy in Antwerp.
The life span of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) in creating beautiful works he dearly loved. Painting was an avenue, which allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.
A great artist once wrote, “If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced”. This artist was Vincent van Gogh, soon to be an appraised artist known all around the world for his works, such as Starry Night. He is one of the very first artists of the post-impressionist style than is now adored in every continent. However, there is much more to the man than one painting. Creating a full timeline that stretches beyond Gogh’s life, this paper will discuss the life of Vincent van Gogh and the impression he made on the world.
“Every production of an artist should be the expression of an adventure of his soul,” said William Maugham, a British playwright from the 19th century. Vincent Van Gogh, an artist who is considered by many one of the most inspirational artists in history, was no stranger to depicting his struggles in life or feelings in his work. Van Gogh’s piece Starry Night, designed in the year 1889, shows this to be true in that it was the result of his experiences in an asylum that encouraged this piece. Despite this work has being so well known, many critics and observers of the piece have differing views on what he was trying to communicate through it. Two prime examples of this can be seen by the views expressed in the poems entitled, “Vincent” and “The Starry Night”, written by Don McClean and Anne Sexton, respectively. While the poem “Vincent”, has a depressing tone to it, “The Starry Night”, by Anne Sexton, depicts Starry Night as having a more lively mood, which more accurately represents that of the painting, by Vincent Van Gogh.
“I feel that there is nothing more truly artistic than to love people” stated by one of the most famous artist in the 20th century, Vincent van Gogh. He was seen as an amazing Post-Impressionism artist who produces a rhythmic and imaginative works like “The Starry Night” and “The Night Cafe”. Unfortunately, during his lifetime, Van Gogh was seen as a failure. Sufferings from mental illness, Van Gogh committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest at the young ages of thirty-seven. So, how did a man who seen love in everything end up killing himself? Because Van Gogh is unable to live a normal live, he turns to art to express himself in a way that are comfortable for him. As a result, he created one of the most important legacy.
From my Museum visit Research Paper I went to the Art Institute of Chicago. When I got there I saw the Van Gogh’s Bedrooms exhibit. It was there main exhibit at the time I thought I would interesting to see his work in person. They were the bedroom in Arles the second versions to be exact not the sketches. The Art Institute had all three of the paintings there. I was drawn to this because I like to see what he tried differently form painting to painting. I wanted to see what he changed and what he kept so this was a perfect work to pick. The artist was Vincent van Gogh. He was born on March 30th, 1853 in Zundert, Netherlands and pasted on July 29, 1890. He was 37 when he died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Auvers-sur-Oise,
Every artist has his or her own style of painting. Each painting tells some sort of story or has some type of personal meaning to the artist. One of the most important figures in modern art is Pablo Picasso. Not only was Pablo Picasso a genius in the field of abstract art, but he also experimented with sculpting and ceramics. Pablo Picasso has taken the world to many places with his unique style of work which is why I believe he is considered to be a genius of the 20th century.
Since the very young age Van Gogh’s art caught my attention. Unique and expressive, Van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh, a standout amongst the most understood post-impressionist craftsmen, for whom shading was the central image of articulation, was conceived in Groot-Zundert, Holland on March 30, 1853.The child of a minister, raised in a religious and refined climate, Vincent was exceptionally enthusiastic, needed fearlessness and battled with his character and with course. He trusted that his actual calling was to lecture the gospel; notwithstanding, it took a long time for him to find his calling as a craftsman. In the vicinity of 1860 and 1880, when he at last chose to end up plainly a craftsman, van Gogh had officially experienced two inadmissible and troubled sentiments and had worked unsuccessfully as an assistant in a book shop, a workmanship sales representative, and an evangelist in the Borinage where he was rejected for enthusiasm.
I feel Van Gogh drew and painted the way he viewed life by his brushstrokes.
He was also known for painting celebrities. One of his most famous celebrity works was of Marilyn Monroe. Also, his portrait “Eight Elvises” was one of the most valuable paintings in the world, when it resold for $100 million in
The song “Vincent” by Mclean has a slow and light tune. The main emotion I feel when watching this video is tranquility. Seeing most of the art for the first time, I somewhat became lost in the amazing details and designs Van Gogh has used. The music, along with the slide show of beautiful and wondrous artwork, aided in my emotions on this video. I had never heard the song before either. The song itself revealed much information about Vincent that I was unaware of. Though, mainly, I believe the song actually molded my first impression on Van Gogh. The song made him out to be a misunderstood individual who may not have been well liked by a majority. A verse from the song goes, “ For they could not love you, but still your love was true, and when no hope was left in sight on that starry, starry night, you took your life, as lovers always do.” I do enjoy the
Vincent Van Gogh; a well known name by most and a highly reputable figure amongst painters and other artists, he showed his true talent and passion for the arts in his short career, a career which only lasted ten years (Preble 117). As we know, it takes a tremendous amount of effort, awareness and creativity to convey your emotions, thoughts and feelings through your work. Here, we will attempt to construe his feelings through his work and also begin to view and understand things the way Van Gogh did. The painting, from the 1880’s is that of a night’s sky composed of oil on canvas. At a first glance Van Gogh’s painting seems to be composed entirely abstract, but with a closer look and more
