I wait in the lobby of Edinboro Elementary for my younger brother, surrounded by vibrant colors, and drawings of what the children who attend there want to be when they grow up, coupled with adorably misspelled descriptions underneath. They remind me of how innocent and simple life is when you are young. Before I got to read any of the posters I see my brother running down the hall in his blue, Pokémon shirt and with a smile that spans from ear to ear, which could only mean that it is Friday. When we entered my car I asked him the usual, “How was your day? Did you have fun at school today? Did you learn anything new?” He replied with his typical “Good. I learned noth-” but before he could finish he was interrupted by the radio with his favorite …show more content…
They hear, and see everything, even when they shouldn’t. While the radio does a fine job of “bleeping” out most of the profanity in songs they play, they cannot “bleep” out the content that glorifies drugs, sexualizes women, and promotes violence. One way the radio could fix this problem is by only playing songs approved for all audiences all the time. Another way is for them to have times that have the highest amount of young listeners set aside for kid appropriate music and have other times set aside for adult only music. While this would not fix the problem completely it would lower the accessibility children have to age inappropriate music. It is not just the radio that is problematic, media browsing sites like YouTube are at fault as …show more content…
My brother, or any other young child could have stumbled across this song just as easily as I had. This is just one example of a popular song today; there are hundreds more that have similar themes that could be used as examples as well. While YouTube does have age restrictions on certain videos, from my experience the vast majority does not. I understand YouTube’s optimal audience is not a young child, but at the same time it should account for the fact that young children have access to their site and should do more to protect the innocence of them. YouTube is not the only online media resource, but others, such as Spotify and Pandora require at the minimum an account and/or a subscription to stream music through them. That makes those websites less available for young children to listen to them and more parental control over what they are
Music has a dangerously potent existential force. Individuals dissolve into melodies, beats and rhythms. According to Ban (Ned) In the U.S.A, “sound only exist when it is going out of existence” (Jones). This ability within music becomes threatened through censorship which infringes and hinders artistic expression. Radio stations use censorship to edit explicit music in hopes of preserving adolescent innocence, however; there in no value in radio censorship. The significance of radio censorship is diminished because editing music for radio play is ineffective in blocking the nature of a song, radio stations kill the authenticity of music, and songs lose their integrity.
It is not possible to label all songs when many comes out each year. They don’t understand that most times the meaning of the lyrics are not literal. There are different interpretations to the song. It can be satire, parody, or a hidden meaning. The parents do not give a reason why a certain song is offensive and who gets offended by the songs. The organization also attacks certain genres such as heavy metal and rap when there are other genres that also contains songs that are “inappropriate” for children. Not all artists in heavy metal and rap have songs that are about sex, drugs, suicide, violence, etc.. It also violates the artists’ freedom of expression. They blame the music, but won’t blame parents for not keeping an eye on what their children are listening
Inappropriate music will get the better of us and we might get excited and swear outloud. This will bring an outburst of rebellious youth. Kids will get emotional depending on the music they are listening too.
Not just children, but adults need to be educated, so they can monitor the environment their children will be exposed too. Parents must be a positive role model to their children, so they won’t look at forms of entertainment as a source of guidance. The responsibility falls on the parents to simply be caring and loving to their child and educate them; parents must emphasize that music is simply music and it’s a form of entertainment not meant to be taken seriously.
Beginning in the 1980's, religious fundamentalists and some parents' groups have waged a persistent campaign to limit the variety of cultural messages available to American youth by attacking the content of some of the music industry's creative products. These attacks have taken numerous forms, including a call by
Music censorship is the editing and cutting of specific words or phrases for a purpose in order to bound distinct subject matter from young minds and to prevent more wrongdoings in the inferior generations. The problem with censorship isn't just the reigns on the free mind, but on what the mind can bestow as a gift to others. Music serves more than just as a means of entertainment. Music conveys messages to the world, and professes problems that are puzzling to deliberate with parents. The bad thing about censoring music is the fact that our right to expression is denounced by other people uncomfortable with certain musical topics (Lombardo, 2017). Censorship is meant to mask certain words and phrases from younger audiences as to not warp young minds into thinking that doing drugs, drinking and suicide are acceptable (Lombardo, 2017).
So what does the FCC do? The FCC is responsible for making sure that the bad content is edited out of every song that hits the radio or television. The Parental Advisory sticker does not mean the content has to be erased, just that it is there and you need to be aware of it. But when that song is played on radio or television, it needs to be edited out. They will not disrupt the flow of the song, but when that offensive lyric comes up, it needs to be blanked out. This also includes music videos and their visual content. There can not be offensive images. Eminem is an example of an artist who is constantly pushing the limits of both the FCC and the RIAA. Numerous people influence a child before adulthood and each one of them has to be aware of the impact that they have. That includes the people at YouTube, Star 104, or the countless other companies that allow children to access music today. How accessible age inappropriate music is for young children is problematic. More awareness by people in charge of young children partnered with more restrictions by media distribution companies would greatly decrease the amount of access that they have to age inappropriate music. That would mean less influence by those songs and a longer preservation of their innocence, and who would not want that young child to think he can be a superhero when he grows
For parents and guardians; it’s important to remain “hip” to what’s being shoved in your children’s ears these days. You don’t have to enjoy it, but you should know it’s out there. Your child will like what they like, but make sure it’s not affecting them emotionally or mentally. For children; it shouldn’t affect you. Survive your environment and don’t allow it to get into your
In 2003, <management of the Six Flags Amusement Park in Darien Lakes, New York, banned Marilyn Manson from performing at the park as part of the Ozzfest tour. In 2003, radio stations across the country removed songs by the Dixie Chiks from airplay because of a comment from the group’s lead singer saying that she was “embarrassed the U.S. President George W. Bush was from her home state of Texas. ”The list of examples, as extensive as it is, only includes some of the major events in music censorship history. The reality of censorship is, as common or persistent as it may be, it really does not constrict the music that is heard. It is becoming increasingly easy to discover and download music online, where, faced against the infinite expanse of the Internet, censorship can be borderline humorously ineffective. There are not even any studies proving the exact effects of music on youth, or people in general for the matter. As Victor Lombardi put it, “An extensive study encompassing psychology, physiology, behavioral studies, sociology, and music would have to be do to prove a form of music is capable of causing harm. The researches would have to be trained not only in research methods but in all these fields and the music involved. A willing, impartial musicologist proficient in the music of
As much as, music is the food of the soul (Shakespeare, Twelfth Night), is also the virus that is spreading through a town. The profanity, unacceptable sexual nature and horrific thoughts that are evident in music are being heard by the young future generations of our country, our nation, our world. Is that right? Should it be deemed today’s normality? No. Many can agree that the content that music holds often isn’t the most appropriate for anyone to hear, on the contrary, there are people out who enjoy hearing these lyrics and also the words help convey the story or the emotion the artist is trying to convey; they can hear the artists thoughts and ideas. Who are we to stop people from telling their story and others from hearing
Since the being of time people have been making and listening to music. Music has been considered the best way to express ourselves. The Bible even talks about how music was used to praise God. Music has been used for all type of things ranging from to getting a girl to notice guy, trying to get over a broken heart, or maybe losing a love one. Now society says that music has become too violent and sexually oriented. Many people have different point of view on this topic some people feel that there should be some type of censorship, while other feel censorship is against the first amendment, and others feel that parents should be responsible for what their children listen to. The question that comes to mind is should
Why is it that when a person that listens to music that may promote violence and contains “objectionable” lyrics does a bad thing, families are quick to point out that it was external materials such as the music that influenced the person to do it?
Music is one of the most popular ways of expression and has been for generations. It makes us want to dance, inspires, soothes, relaxes, and sometimes tells us a story. Music is something the whole world shares and has brought together different kinds of people. However, there has been a question on whether some music has affected society negatively and crossed the line with some of its lyrics, content, and the persona of the artists. Certain music has been boycotted and even banned in the U.S. Pro-censorship supporters say that music is something that can deeply affect our society especially children who should not have to be subjected to things like violence, sex, drugs, or hate. However, being that music is a form of expression,
Music with explicit lyrics or content started having black and white parental advisories on them in 1994 (http://www.riaa.org/Parents-Advisory-4.cfm). Are these labels necessary? Is controversial music molding our society and causing teenagers to turn to drugs? Is censorship necessary to protect the youth of our nation. Generally, younger people are against censorship on this issue. Music is an outlet and even an anti-drug for many teens; however, parents and society feel differently. Should parents censor their children or society, many parents would like to raise their own
