In 1987, a junior hockey brawl involving Todd Betruzzi, broke out at the world junior hockey tournament. This fight was one that people will never forget, and personally, I find it to be quite disturbing. While watching the video, it was clear to see that this game was very chippy. Meaning, the players were hitting one another after the whistles, and I can imagine that they were saying some not so nice things to one another. I believe that considering the fact that Canada was up two goals in a gold medal game it, it could have been predicted that the game may have gotten aggressive. However, I would not have inferred that a fight clearing the benches would happen. I don’t think anyone could have predicted that, as it was unacceptable behaviour …show more content…
My dad, my three siblings, and myself, all play hockey. Nevertheless, I have experienced both personally and by watching, how violent it really is. For seven years, I played in a girl’s non-contact hockey league. However, almost every game became violent. Whether it was just a few minor penalties, or someone getting hit into the boards, the game wasn’t complete without some sort of violence taking place. Since it was supposed to be a non-contact league, the violence was limited in comparison to contact leagues. For instance, my 13-year-old brother plays AA hockey, and the past year was their first year of contact hockey. It was very scary to watch for many reasons. Firstly, the boys didn’t know how to hit properly, so they would just ram each other into the boards, thus resulting in injuries. As well, they focused too much on the hitting aspect, that they completely ignored the fact that they were playing hockey! Often, I would hear the coaches yelling from the benches and telling the boys to stop hitting so much. I believe that the boys are much too young to be playing a game where contact is so relevant. At 13-years-old, an individual’s brain is still developing, so taking the chance of possibly getting a concussion is not a smart choice. I believe that contact should not be introduced into a youth’s hockey game, until they are at least 18 years old. Yes, an individual’s brain is not fully developed
In this paragraph I’ll tell you about the pros of playing contact sports. It’s no fun without head butting the ball in soccer or tackling someone in foot ball to obtain the ball or checking someone to score a goal in hockey. Most contact sports related injuries are very minor. Rarely do the major injuries occur. WebMD states “Kids who play contact sports should be moderated and not go to crazy. Your child can avoid these injuries if they take some precautions while playing.” Without checking someone in hockey or tackling someone in football that games would become much boring for the audience and the players. Contact sports are also good if you want to learn how to become a better athlete. In the big leagues and in college contact sports you do tackle and check. It’s better to learn these tactics when you are younger so you can become better are them when you are older. Contact sports should be played by kids 14 and under because the dangers and risks are very rare and often do not occur.
Hockey has always been known to be a physical sport; it is full of body checks, hits from behind, sometimes the misuse of the hockey stick, and even fights. Now all off these are deemed acceptable by hockey fans to a certain extent. When a player swings his stick at another player and an injury occurs to the opposing man the instigator can usually expect to be penalized for a short amount of time, maybe even a suspension from the team for a few games. But when does this violent act on the ice become a criminal offence? Does it take for the recipient to break his neck, or maybe even loose his vision for us to take a serious look at what happened and realize that this is not what we are looking to watch when we sit down to watch a game.
“The action got progressively rougher.” Unfortunately this is how many of the incidents started off. Deacon tell and describes many little stories about rink rage and how much of an issue it is becoming. He tells an incident at a peewee game where “hotheaded” fans were not pleased about penalty call on a player from Delhi, they
When it comes to subject that the public is concerned about, contact sports and the consequences that come from playing such sports is definitely high on the list. The one fact that one will notice by reading the following is the reasons why contact sports should be banned and the credible sources that have confirmed the harsh outcomes of playing such sports. Through the injuries, problems that come from concussions, and the fact that athletes are pushed beyond their limitations, one will see that playing contact sports is not at all what it is cracked up to be. The injuries tell it all and through the blood-soaked writing that has been typed below one will see that playing contact sports should be banned for good from public schools.
Hockey is one of the only sports that will let contact like football or any other sports like those that will have people hitting others for the protection of others. In hockey it three periods instead of half and it has timed penalties instead of yards.
Professional hockey players eat, sleep, and breathe the game. This passion breeds a rare type of diehard fan to follow the sport. The game of hockey is over 100 years old and fighting is one element that has kept players engaged and fans hooked throughout the years. The first indoor hockey game was played in 1875 and the NHL was formed 42 years later in 1917. In 1922, fighting was added to the rule book as a regulated aspect of the game. Looking at the history of hockey shines a light on the players and fans’ passion for the game. Hockey fights should stay in the game for the protection and safety of skilled players, rivalries between teams, and finally because it's a unique part of the sport.
Every sport has its own unique signature that separates it from the rest of the sports world. Baseball has the homerun, basketball has the slam-dunk, golf has the hole in one, and football has the touchdown. But, perhaps the sport with the most distinguished and unique signature is hockey and its fights. However, hockey officials and executives are trying to eliminate the games most distinctive aspect. Yet, because of the recent decline in the amount of fighting in the National Hockey League (NHL) and since a ban on fighting in the NHL could jeopardize the popularity of the sport, eliminating fighting from games may not be necessary. Over recent years, the amount of fighting in NHL games has been on the decline and the role of the one time
Claude Lemiuex who played for many teams throughout his 21 year career in the NHL was known as one of the biggest pests that has been in the league. Pests in the NHL are players that attempt to antagonize opposing players with physical play and by chirping. He is best known for the infamous hit on Kris Draper where he hit him from behind, forcing Drapers face into the boards. Draper suffered a broken jaw, shattered cheek, and orbital bone which needed surgery that involved his jaw being wired shut and a lot of stitches. This hit lead to the rivalry of the Detroit Red Wings and the Colorado Avalanche. Throughout the next 5 years there were 2 or 3 line brawls between the two teams that even included the goalies fighting. Darren McCarty got his revenge on Lemieux in the first brawl since the Draper incident and blindsided him after a whistle in the game. That game had 18 major fighting penalties that totaled up to 144 penalty minutes combined for both teams. If the NHL didn’t have fighting who knows what else he would have done in games to opposing players but by having fighting in the game he knew that he would have pay for his actions so he did not play how he usually did against the Red Wings. Lemieux only received a 2 game suspension and $1000 dollar fine for the hit so having someone knock him around a little bit was a more suitable punishment. If fighting wasn’t allowed he never would have faced any consequences for that hit because in todays game he would have been suspended for maybe 20 games or
There is no sporting event that brings an explosion quite like that of an ice hockey fight. Ice hockey has always been stereotyped as brutal and unnecessarily violent, a game full of players who are nothing but “goons”. Fighting in hockey is a form of sanctioned violence, as it has deemed acceptable in hockey since the introduction of the National Hockey League in 1917. The league did note even penalize it until the 1922 NHL season (Brandon 2013). A recent political uproar has taken place within the hockey world as more people are pushing to have fighting completely removed from the game. As a hockey player for over 25 years, I have
It is too complicated and is not likely to grab a young reader’s attention. The “Prologue” introduces the violence that dominates the game today in spite of the efforts to reduce it. A child who reads this book and then watches an NHL game will realize that very little has been done to make the game safer since Jacques Plante first wore a mask in 1959 even though masks and helmets are now worn by all players. Even with all the protective gear NHL players wear, hockey is a very dangerous
Nevertheless, it is difficult to accept that violence is incidental when NHL players who specialize in fighting, goons or enforcers, are paid a premium for this behavior even though their hockey skills are marginal and those who refuse to fight are consigned to the minor leagues as punishment.
For as long as hockey has been in existence, it has always been a violent sport ; the sport is full of body checks, being knocked from behind, sometimes the misappropriation of the hockey stick, and even horrible fights. Now all off these are considered satisfactory by hockey admirers to a certain extent. When a player on the team starts to swings his stick at the opposite team and injury occurs to the opposite player the ringleader can normally expect to be disciplined for a time that is short, and at times they are even suspended from the team for a while. But then again when does this violent action on the ice start to become
Fighting in the National Hockey League(NHL) has been an ongoing brutal way of getting fans excited. The past years the number of fights have dropped, with only 344 fights last season, the fewest number within the past 15 years (Adam Vingan). For those people who oppose fighting this comes as good news, as this area of the Hockey has been investigated heavily. In 1922, rule 56 was introduced into the National Hockey League which was supposed to regulate the fighting in the NHL and was called the official NHL rulebook(Wikipedia). Still today we have fighting in the National Hockey league even with rule 56 strictly enforced. It’s not just the fighting that’s the problem anymore, it’s the concussions and other side effects/injuries from it. Players are suffering far greater head trauma each time they get in a fight which further on in life leads to multiple health problems. If fighting were to be banned in the NHL, would it still be the same? Some may say yes, but others speculate no. For now, fans don’t see any changes coming soon so why not enjoy it better yet play it. Though pro-hockey is a sport known for its violence, it is a great career for the players that can make it into the pros. It is a great career because it provides a great income, the athletes thrive on the physicality of the sport, and it is growing in popularity worldwide.
Throughout America’s history, Americans have seen waves and waves of violence. The bloody American culture has taken away any sense of security that Americans may have had. Due to media coverage we are now more in the front lines than ever. Which means that we now feel personal connection victims that are on the news coverage because we know that in one way or another we all share the same characteristics.
THESIS: Contact sports have been here since the medieval times. Soccer was also already being put into sport use by china in the dynasties. Implied, players on both teams have agreed to be hit, pushed, shoved, and possibly fought. What can be used for considering when or where a player crosses the line? Using examples from previous court cases, we will examine how players in the NHL could be charged when excessive force against other players in the opposite team come into play. Having hockey being used for an example, we will examine and look at the rules of the NHL, as well as how Todd Bertuzzi from the Vancouver Canucks stepped over the line, and was charged with assault.
