This week we viewed Oedipus Rex which demonstrated the Greek drama and discovered how the Greeks new what would happen in the plays as they were based of stories and myths. The Greeks wore masks to take away from the action and the actors spoke in monotone to let the viewers focus on the words that were written. Today actors do not wear masks which gives a great emphasis placed on the actors and how what they do connects with the words. These things can range from facial expressions or movements. Though modern theatre today is different than what we viewed in the Greek drama, Oedipus Rex, they both have significances that make them stand out. In Oedipus Rex, the actors did not make much movement and spoke in monotones. These characteristics helped to draw the audience’s attention to the words that were written for the play. The actors of this play had already knew what would happen as it was based of their myths and stories. Greek drama was more effective than modern theatre when it comes to understand the words, due to the fact that there is less action so a viewer can focus on the words. During the time of Greek drama there was also no real showing of violence as they did this stuff on the side.

“The aural elements, whether the actors’ voices, the background music, or the clashing of swords, constitute an important part of the theatrical production” (179). Like we discussed earlier, the Greek drama had its uses of elements such as the masks and focusing on the language, whereas modern theatre has more of the use of actions to help connect with the words being spoken. Both of these time frames have had substantial plays performed, but are different of each other in multiple aspects. Props also can add to the emphasis and in Oedipus Rex there was not set props used to set the mood, but in modern theatre set props are used more
