Violence is the Enemy of Today’s Youth When a child observes daily occurrences of violence across: news broadcast, radio, and public incidences, why society is so violent should not be the question, but how society can decrease youth violence should be explored. Today’s youth has an overwhelming burden to bear. Violence has increased in society and youth often are exposed to situations that end in violent acts. The family dynamic has changed significantly in the last 40 years: with increased divorce, single parent households, and blended families the variability for children to be unsupervised allows for increased exposure to violence as well as expressing violence. Children will emulate what they see; one example of how violence is perpetuated in families. The cycle of abuse and violence regularly starts at home.
Secondly, technology and media has invaded every facet of society. Most American homes have cable or satellite television, with hundreds of channels for children to choose from. Many of these channels have explicit warnings that have become like white noise, recurrently it is not notice because society has grown accustom to seeing these warnings. Gaming systems have become the best friend to adults and children alike. Video games are frequently violent. When violence is viewed over and over, one will get use to those visions and they become normal to see. Music lyrics and videos also commonly depict violence as glamorous and cool. When kids or young adults are not getting the attention and approval they seek from adults in their life, they turn toward other avenues to have those needs met. The internet has a host of opportunities to view repeated acts of violence. (75%) of 8-18 year olds have 13 hours of media exposure a day. (Foresman, 2010) That is more than average adult’s works. It is fair to say media is a huge influence on the increasing violence noted in society.
Thirdly, drugs, weapons, and violence go hand and hand. When children are exposed to any of the above, they are at high risk for become violated or violating another human being. If you research violence
