There is nothing that has done more to tear American families apart than the existence of violent crimes, guns, gangs, drugs, and the fear that walks alongside those terrors. In a violent crime, a victim is harmed by or threatened with violence. Violent crimes include rape and sexual assault, robbery, assault and murder. Violent crime and victim rights are on the rise of major concern for most of the citizens in the United States of America. |
“When a man is denied the right to live the life he believes in, he has no choice but to become an outlaw” (Nelson Mandea). There are many Americans have become victims of violent crimes. In these violent acts of crimes guns, gangs, wars, drugs and even mental disorders may be the cause to commit

(MacBradaigh, 2013) Most of these individual are not properly trained to use their weapon and not only that but they purchase them illegal. They learn to use them from fellow gang members or from movie, television, and more commonly video games.
The investigations into violent crimes today are starting to reveal that one of the reason individuals are harming others is because they are mentally unstable and suffer from some sort of mental disability. The fact is “the proportion of Americans who describe mental illness in terms consistent with violent or dangerous behavior nearly doubled.” Also, the vast majority of Americans believe that persons with mental illnesses pose a threat for violence towards others and themselves (Pescosolido, 1999). There are many individuals with mental disabilities that tend to lash out on people, not because they want to, it is just a defense because they know they are not normal. Take people with turrets for example: They scream and hit because they get so frustrated because they can’t complete simple task like normal individuals like brushes their teeth without suffering a twitch so they get upset with themselves and hit things. A violent crime that has recently taken place in a Colorado Movie Theater shooting. The shooter himself suffered from a mental illness and it caused him to act out violently. Though it doesn’t give him the right to do what he did it shows how an unstable mind can cause
I am going to begin by discussing the violent crime. There are 4 main classes of violent crime. These classes consist of: Murder and Negligient Homicide, Forcible Rape, Robbery and Aggravated Assault. These crimes are usually defined as offenses that include force or the threat of force. The violent crimes are listed under the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program. There are other crimes which classify as violent crimes, these include: Burglary, Larceny-theft and Motor Vehicle theft. The FBI uses a system to classify crimes from the worst crime, Murder and Negligient Homicide, being at the top of the list, and the least serious crime, Motor Vehicle theft, being at the bottom of the list. One crime which is listed on both violent crimes and property crimes is Arson, depending on the circumstances surrounding the offense at the time.
In addition, “The perceived link between mental illness and violence could lie in television and films that sensationalize murders committed by mentally ill persons…” (Callahan). The problem with people with mental illness being categorized as being violent is with popular TV shows showing people crimes such as murder being committed by people with mental illnesses. The media also plays a huge role in the reason why people with mental health issues are thought of as violent because they talk more about crimes such as murder being done where mental illness played a
The main complication is that America’s corrupted mental health system is a liability to the safety of regular American citizens because mentally ill people do not get the proper help they need and are easily able to gain access to guns. A majority of people with mental illness show signs of having a mental illness and are often not given a proper diagnosis or any diagnosis at all. Only one-third of the people with mental illness who have committed mass shootings in the U.S. since 1900 had sought or received mental health care prior to their attacks. This information suggests that most shooters do not seek or receive care that they need (Duwe 1). If a person with a mental illness is left untreated they could end up hurting themselves or others. Sandy hook mass shooter Adam Lanza presented clear signs of schizophrenia but was not issued the proper care he needed. (Turndoff 5). Another instance where the mental health system has failed is in a case where an individual with mental illness may be diagnosed, but their case is not taken seriously and left untreated. For instance, the notorious Charleston Church shooter Dylann Roof was diagnosed with a host of multiple disorders by a
Violent crimes are defined as crimes that entail the use of force or harm to the physical body of another person. The gravity of a violent crime is typically established by the scale of bodily harm caused. The utilization of a weapon raises the severity of the offense (Izzi, 2014). Common violent crimes might include assault, aggravated robbery, sexual abuse, domestic violence, battery, rape, and homicide. Other crimes can be categorized "violent" even when the victim is not physically injured, for example crimes
Violent and property crimes have negatively impacted areas nationwide in the United States. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the definition of a violent crime includes four offenses that involve force or threat of force: murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault. This type of crime involves causing harm to others, both physical and mental. In the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program, a property crime included offenses such as burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. This type of crime does not harm an individual, but does keep them from using their own property.
While it is true that the United States possesses an unparalleled amount of firearms, nowhere does it say that those firearms must be used for violence. Yet, there are nearly 33,594 gun related deaths per year (National Center for Health Statistics, 2016, p. 1). The reason behind this outbreak of illegal usage of firearms is something known as deviance; more specifically, criminal deviance. Deviance is the recognized violation of cultural norms, while crime is the violation of a society’s formally enacted criminal law (Macionis, 2014, p. 238). People tend to forget that there is a biological element to crime. Not every criminal consciously chooses the life of crime, some are genetically pre-disposed; others may have a mental illness that prohibits them from thinking and judging clearly. All of these biological factors cannot be overlooked when assessing gun violence. While there have been recently developed mental screenings, it is nearly impossible to determine every individual that potentially poses a risk with a firearm. Of course, biology is not the only aspect of gun violence. Many individuals have been faced with situations in life where they feel the only answer is to harm another human being with a firearm. Perhaps an individual breaks into a home yielding a weapon and the homeowners feel that the only viable option was to fatally harm the individual. There are also people who “become deviant as others define them that way” (Macionis, 2014, p. 241). Each
Hate crimes are criminal infractions in which the victim is targeted due to his or her actual or perceived demographic status, that is, their race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or national origin. Unlike many other violent crimes, hate crimes have an effect on both the immediate target and the communities of which the individuals are a member. As such, research (Herek, Gillis, & Cogan, 1999; McDevitt, Balboni, Garcia, & Gu, 2001) has shown that victims of violent hate crimes may suffer from more psychological distress, that is, depression, stress, anger, anxiety, among other psychological related concerns more than victims of other violent crimes. The purpose of this paper is to explore a subtopic of forensic psychology that is not commonly discussed, that is, bias crimes or hate crimes. In order to explore this topic, an examination of several aspects related to it will ensue, including a detailed review of the effects hate crimes have on victims, the effects hate crimes have on communities, people who are risk of being victims, the perpetrators of hate crimes (whether they are individuals or part of hate groups), an overall inquiry of hate-motivated offending as well as the different types, and lastly, addressing hate crimes and potential solutions. For this reason, the main question of focus for this paper, then, is why otherwise non-violent people commit violent offenses towards certain groups (i.e. minority groups) as well as the effects that follow for the victims.
Violent crimes are unfortunately a routine occurrence among our present society. Violent crimes are those in which an offender uses and/or threatens to use a weapon in order to accomplish their crimes. A violent crime occurs in the United States every 27 seconds (Karmen 78). Violent crimes can end fatally if the offender feels threatened. Many behaviors can be practiced in order to successfully reduce the likelihood of these violent crimes from occurring.
There is no doubt that the results of a rampage can be tragic, But the media tends to exploit the drama and leave out the context.Aside from the group of severely ill individuals, multiple studies have shown that mental illness alone does Not incline a person to violence.
As mentioned by Howitt (2015), a mental illness can be defined as ‘a variety of psychological conditions in which there is a characteristic disabling and distressing impairment in some aspect of the psychological functioning of the individual.’ However, not all mental illnesses are found to be at risk of violent offending. Such illnesses as anxiety and depression are found to be less violent than mental health problems such as bipolar and schizophrenia, both of which will be included in the subset of mental health problems recognised as violent for the purpose of this essay. The relationship that has been identified between mental illness and crime has the ability to be misconceived through misclassification of violent mentally ill offenders and a variety of factors which have the ability to cloud the evidence of the
Violent crimes are more likely to be reported to the police than property crimes, for the reason that it tends to have witnesses. Not only can witnesses help catch the criminal, but there’s also always a victim. The victim can report the crime and give descriptions of the offender. Now when it comes to property crimes, there’s not always a witness, the criminal might break in a house, however, the residents might not be in the home at the moment. This makes it harder to catch the criminal, because the victims don’t have enough prove that they can show when they are filling a police report. I am actually very surprised that the data showed that 80% of car thefts are reported. I’m surprised, because even though it’s still a high percentage, it
Violent crime is a serious problem and could not to be neglected in present society. It means all incidents of wounding and assault with or without injury in the Crime Survey for England and Wales (ONS, 2015). The crime rate in Liverpool was about 90.86 per 1000 population in police record by the end of June 2015 (HO, 2015). According to Liverpool City Council (2015), the violence rate per 1000 population was increase 16.6% from 2013 to 2014 and reach 10.2 from April 2014 to March 2015, higher than other crime. At the same time, the number in 1000 people that experience personal robbery was about 485, not all robberies would be reported to the police so maybe the real condition was graver. Hence, violence and robbery continue to be of increasing concern.
It may be argued that the media disproportionately exposes violent crime because is more serious, but with crime in Canada at an all time low, why is it that the media only advertises the numbers associated with violent crime to be at an all time low and not all crime. How does online news outlets cover the decrease in crime in relation to violent crime and non-violent crime? The variables that will be used are online news outlets ' stories and articles regarding the crime drop, and the reduction in crime (violent vs non violent). The sample will consist of popular online news outlets who 's articles will be looked over in order to determine what they deem important in regards to the crime drop. It is predicted that mainly only violent crime statistics are written about because it comes off as the most exciting, regardless of the fact that it is less common.
Violent crime is a completely human characteristic. It has dominated our history books, been sensationalized by the media and created a pervasive fear which dominates our culture. Is there a way to possibly prevent violent crime? Neurocriminology, a classification of criminology centered on neuroscience and its relationship between the causes and cures of crime, may have the answer to that question. Adrian Raine, a criminal psychologist for more than thirty years, proposes that criminal behavior may have its origins in heredity and biology and future criminal tendencies can be predicted in children. Professor Raine’s discoveries can potentially thwart violent crime activity by identifying genetic markers which are characteristic of violent offenders. If so, what are the moral and ethical dilemmas society will now have to contend with when tagging certain individuals as natural-born killers? Despite this milestone discovery, many questions stills persist such as how society will react. In addition, though potential criminal behavior may be prevented by examining genetic markers, the moral and ethical implications of neurocriminology, may lead to discrimination and the further criminalization of poverty.
Violent crime has been a part of history since centuries ago. Early Romans and Greeks witnessed a good rate of crime which lead to development of punishments and written laws such as the Draco’s code and later came ethical issues. As the time passed, new laws were created as human nature got creative with crime. Constitutions were laid and documented. The United States constitution was adopted from the English code of laws. Yet the most significant change was the development of police. The role of police has been very questionable in the past years. There has been a lot of tension between community and police. It is very disappointing that despite strong laws and police force heinous crimes still occur. In the past couple years, the major adversarial crime the United States has been dealing with is the mass shootings. Some of the prime examples of such shootings are Sandy hook elementary shooting, San Bernardino shooting, Virginia Tech campus shooting and Orlando, Florida shooting which occurred before the year 2017. Nevertheless, little did we know that the deadliest mass shooting was about to shake the entire nation.
