After having a taste of this course during the first two weeks of the class, it was difficult for me to leave due to pregnancy. I didn’t wanna let go of it. The course outline enticed me, the virtual field trips were fun and provided me with new learning. I was uncomfortable with the Flipgrid videos but it helped me overcome my anxiety to be on camera. My first virtual field trip to Chauvet Caves gave me goosebumps discovering those artifacts and analyzing what might be the message in those arts. The development of communications fascinates me. Discovering that our present communities on social media or any online group of like-minded people were predicted to exist even prior to its existence puts me in awe. I’m referring to Benedict Anderson’s imagined communities. It made me realized how I myself is a member of these imagined communities. Should I thank the Internet for providing me an opportunity to be in these communities? That despite being physically alone, I get my dose of belongingness through the imagined communities online – whether it’s the online gaming group or social media group that I identify with. …show more content…
In the beginning, I understood it as just being connected to the rest of the world, now I can relate to McLuhan’s warning of tribalism and fear and I believe it exists in our online interactions. This was apparent to me during our virtual trip on Reddit. I am confident that the sud-reddits are composed of its own tribe. People choose to subscribe to a topic where they can find like-minded users, and unfortunately during discussions, the harshness in responses between users with opposing ideas (other tribe) shows anger and
This course has been an eye opening and thought provoking experience for me. I completely underestimated this course when I first enrolled. Reading the description I thought it would be a simple class on business ethics, focusing on the ways to do things in a professional manner. I could not have been more wrong. When I go to any type of training I ask myself what I took away from the experience. Before I get into the actual course and what I enjoyed about that, I first must say they the instructor staff was by far the most impressive. Like many of my fellow classmates I am a working adult with children one of the biggest fears I have about a web based course is that the flow of instruction is going to be difficult
I liked everything about this course. The seminars, study plans, and the weekly discussions help
Do you know anything about cave paintings? Well I am here to inform you about them. For example, the majestic paintings of bison in Cosquer Cave. In Altamira more beautiful animals of the Ice Age. In Lascaux too were majestic animals like horse, deer, bison, etc. These facts are truly amazing. These caves are jewels of mother nature. Also, about Carbon 14 Dating and how it works with its formulas.
The Chauvet Cave, which is located in the southern part of modern day France, is full of Palaeolithic (Paleolithic) paintings created about thirty to thirty-three thousand years ago. The last Ice Age period was estimated to be around one-hundred-and-ten to twelve-thousand years ago, and places this within it. However, it was only discovered about twenty-two years ago in 1994 by a group of “cavers” led by the man himself, Jean-Marie Chauvet. Today, the cave is compelling to many observers as it is described to be loaded with “skillfully executed” charcoal and carved creations including animals such as horses/stallions, deer-like figures, lions, hyenas, owls, panthers, and rhinos.
A. When “visiting” the Lascaux cave I really started to understand just how difficult it must have been for the painters to do what they did. Not only were they in a deep, winding cave, they were painting and sculpting these amazing images. I also realized just how dedicated the artists must have been to work so hard.
Inventory: I am an independent learner, so this course is perfect for my learning style. I’m also a spatial learner which means I take in information by studying graphics. One way I would
Before inspecting and analyzing social media’s role in today’s society, the purpose of it needs to be acknowledged. The first form of it came about in the late 1990’s in the shape of a website called Six Degrees. The website, in the words of founder Andrew Weinreich, “was created based on the theory that every person in the world could be connected to each other by just six degrees of separation” (Eastern Michigan University Public Relations). Although it has succeeded, the original idea of Weinreich and Six Degrees has been abused and blown way out of proportion. Yes, everyone is indeed connected, which is amazing on its own. However, when the actions of billions are combined in an online world where no filter is necessary and nobody is afraid
From Martin Luther King Junior to Mahatma Gandhi, the most influential social leaders understood the power of peaceful protest and advancing the world through effective debate. Despite their example, Lukianoff accurately displays that the power of citizens as well as students has been employed to dissuade speakers with controversial perspectives from sharing the state of their American mind. Not only is this concept dangerous to the second amendment but to society as a whole. By handpicking which viewpoints are expressed in any environment we create citizens who are unable to handle constructive criticism or debate to advance everyone’s understanding.
From day one, I noticed the relative ease of the course. The two friendly instructors welcomed the entire class, and they presented the material in a simple and comprehensible manner. My seven classmates and I bonded immediately. I recall
I was going into the class scared because I have never took a women’s study course before, and it was my first semester at Texas Woman's University. I love this class and it has shown me a lot about women and about my own health. Some of the topic or video we have to watch open my eyes that our health care system is in terrible shape. I did not think that I would get the blogging right away, but I did and now I love it. I love the topics we cove and the book teaches me things that I never image before. This class help me focus on my health and show me the choice I have to make for the future to live a long and successful live.
An organization that I am involve in right now is Serve. Serve is a part of my church where I watch the children on Sundays. The purpose of Serve is to provide ministry for the young children, we would provide songs, playtime and snacks for them. The children are able to do arts and crafts, play with toys and listen to Bible lessons. After doing a little research on my church I found out that Vertical Church Vision Statement is "to be a multicultural and multigenerational life-giving church that welcomes unchurched people." Vertical church mission is "to reach people with the life-giving message of Jesus so that they can become fully devoted followers of Him." Yes Serve is doing the things that it needs to do to achieve its vision and mission
One of my favorite art works is La Molendera, or The Woman Grinding Maize, by Diego Rivera. The medium of this painting is oil paint on a horizontal canvas that measures 106.7 x 121.9 cm. When I first see this painting, the woman dressed in white with her hair split in two braids, grinding maize on a stone, is what stands out to me the most. It is traditional for women in Mexico that make tortillas to grind the maize, corn, on a rock. In the background I see three already made tortillas baking on top of a ceramic dish. The colors used in the atmosphere are cool toned, which gives you a sense of calm and a soothing sensation. The main colors used here
The second concept I want to talk about is virtual communities. Virtual communities are social groups whose interactions are mediated through information technologies, particularly the internet. Like modernism, virtual communities are very dependent on technology and the internet. Since science and technology has advanced in the past decade, people don’t need to go to different places to meet different people and can meet others over different social media platforms or even video games. Sometimes, those people met over the internet can become very close friends. For example, I play a lot of video games and I have acquainted myself virtually with many people playing those games. Some of them I even ended up meeting in real life and are still friends with today. Virtual communities have become such a social norm, that soon, people will have friends all over the internet. I think the aspect of virtual communities is good for society, because it allows people to have a greater awareness of other cultures all over the world. With more insight of how other societies and cultures operate, there is a greater chance to expand one's own social
Communities are all about groups of individuals who share something in common. This makes going on the internet seem like an odd way to find more communities, form new ones, or strengthen pre-existing ones. The internet however is full of communities. Communities can be based upon religion, location, ethnicity, an interest, or a personal matter. The internet itself is “a global distributed data communications network” (Kirmayer, Raikhel, & Rahimi, 2013, p. 166). This is what makes the internet so full of communities because communication is the key to putting multiple individuals with commonalities into communication, which is the basis of any community. Online communities differ from communities that exists off the web in a couple of
While registering for the semester I noticed this course and thought it would be very beneficial for both my personal and professional lives. I felt I was in need of learning new techniques and regimes to reduce stress, increase productivity, and learn to efficiently and effectively relax in order to improve my communication. I mean who wouldn’t want to learn how to relax and receive credit hours at the same time. With that being said I immediately signed up, and for once I was excited opposed to being nervous of the unexpected like I was for previous courses I have taken. Another perk to this class was seeing that Professor Mantel was the instructor. I had taken one of her workshop previously (Humor in Communication), and not only did I learn several beneficial ways to communicate through humor, but the workshop was very interesting and entertaining.
