Virtual School Consultant Project
Virtual schooling for K-12 is the biggest trend in education today and is focus on supplemental and blended learning environments that happens in conjunction with face-to-face learning. According to the September 2011 Issue Brief on Virtual Charter Schools ' blended learning is the focal point of innovation and experienced the most significant growth in virtual schools. Students’ gravitation to fully online learning, at this time, is limited; consequently, supplemental or fulltime programs are the most common schools in Maryland and was the basis of this recommendation (Babour, n.d.).
XYZ is a district school in Maryland and has experienced a declining dropout rate based on an Annie Casey Foundation Study (2014), and as a result employed the services of a consultant to create a virtual school that offers supplemental programs through a virtual learning environment. The program/ school offering student service similar to Obridge in Massachusetts. The areas the consultant explored included policy, structure, funding, course development, and possible barriers.
Policy
Policy standards are essential in regulating and ensuring that students thrive in the K-12 virtual classroom, in college, and in his/her career choice; therefore, our educational system must continuously develop and embrace the very best practices, policies, and ideas and the State regulating agency must implement policies that are comprehensive and inclusive to all
The Virtual Academy of Lafourche (VAL), organized in 2012, is a Louisiana Type 1, Virtual Charter School in partnership with Lafourche Parish School Board, providing unique models of instruction for students’ k-12. VAL provides its academic content in a blended learning environment, online and with onsite support for over 450 students at four sites in Lafourche Parish, two in Thibodaux, LA-St. Mary Site, North Acadian Site; one in Matthews LA: Central Site and one in Larose LA, South LaFourche Site. The staffing model for the school is unique in the region, in that about 50% of the staff are employees of a staffing service, and others are the employees of a provider of back office services, E-Learning of Thibodaux. The majority of the Educational Consultants, who provide academic support through mentoring online and tutorial assistance on-site, are retired, highly credentialed educators. All students participate in the State of Louisiana Assessment System, which includes testing at Prekindergarten and Kindergarten (Dibels), grades 3-8 (LAA English, Math, and
Author Fowler (2013) describes a regulatory policy as one associated with rules of behavior applied to groups of people. The rules, which include a penal aspect for those failing to comply, are enforced by entities such as state governments and local school boards. The GCN policy, adopted by the SCPS School Board provides the formal framework through which rules of evaluation are interpreted and applied, and therefore falls into the realm of regulatory policy.

I did not value speeding through my courses having a sole purpose of finishing the class as quickly as possible. Additionally, retaining the given information was valuable to me. I longed to reach my maximum potential as a student. Lesson after lesson, I took incredibly thorough notes. I discovered that studying directly after completing the day’s work resulted in me remembering the information more so than on another occasion. Consequently, this became a part of my daily routine. I implemented intense study sessions prior to my exams, ensuring I would score my highest. I can recall studying for at least five hours on a regular basis. One aspect of Florida Virtual School I found came in handy was the ability to contact my teachers regularly.
Topic: Violation of the open-enrollment and teacher licensing statutes by Northern Ozaukee School District’s operation of a virtual charter school outside the district.
New Mexico Virtual Academy is proud to say that overall, the school gained 2.38 points, growth from the previous academy year.
Could those courses be conducted through the eCAT Academy or would cyber charter schools be necessary? Current legislation for cyber schools should be discussed, including their unregulated use of tuition money to advertise. The community may or may not feel that cyber charter schools are aligned to their belief. The community may have strong feelings on youth being nurtured to develop appropriate social skills and may not approve of expanding online learning to outside sources. Furthermore, the cyber charter schools the superintendent might want to use would need to provide data over time that is evidence of the student achievement expected at LaTrobe. The superintendent would be wise to educate the stakeholders and collaborate with them prior to spending public education dollars to have another institution educate their students. To me, it sends a message that the school can’t handle the course. I would rather see school districts collaborating and sharing online courses with each other than using cyber charter schools. This will keep tax dollars in the public school system, as well as add to the variety of course options available to students that the schools can regulate by working together to develop learning objectives and common assessments that meet the curricular requirements of the
I identified a single research participant in this single subject case study. Specifically, I interviewed a teacher leader Allison [pseudonym], who is the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) lead teacher in Autumn Woods Virtual School [AWVS, pseudonym] for the past three academic years. While Allison has no direct reports, as a teacher leader, she is seen as an extension of the current administration team, in developing and supporting, teachers and interventionist use of data to raise student academic achievement. Since Allison has been employed at the school, there has been an increase in student state assessment scores for students in the lowest 25th percentile. Additionally, Allison has presented the school’s MTSS program and teacher
By endorsing activities that build on each pupil’s personal strength and skills, educators have a greater chance of breaking through the cycle of socioeconomic disadvantage within the younger generation. Thomson (2002) suggests that virtual schoolbags, the unique knowledge and interests each student brings to school, places children in a social position that is either advantageous or disadvantageous. Being born in a middle-class family is more likely to result in children with higher literacy and numeracy rates because their parents are better equipped at effectively preparing them for school. Conversely, students from a low socioeconomic background have parents who are too busy working two jobs to give them the support needed to understand
Curriculum is changing to Common Core and through that change the alternative site will be increasing the expectations of students while striving to retain the family culture of the school. I have been an integral part of implanting online and computer based instruction in the school. “Virtual Schools offer learning options to high-performing students and provide an opportunity for school success to those at risk of dropping out” (Roblyer, 2006, p. 31). Alternative education students enroll with a variety of performance levels, in one math class students can range from a 3rd grade math level to high school proficiency. The curriculum at the
My worst memories of my childhood was getting bullied and peer pressured in public school. Being around people who wanted nothing good for me wasn’t a good environment and I wanted to leave. I ended up leaving and went to an online school, the experience was more enjoyable and I was happy. When considering which type of school to go to, many families want to know which one is better based on the learning environment and the people there. The learning experience, the friendships being made, and the pace of the classes are all things both schools provide but, if you want one that doesn’t make you a victim of bullying and you could be ahead of your classes and graduate early, online school would be the choice for you.
When considering Vasquez ‘s (2013) guiding principles for STEM education which include: emphasis on 21st century learning, focus on integration, challenging students, creating variety in instruction, and establishing relevance (p. 18 -19), Agora’s ability to meet these principles depends on which classroom you visit on each given day. These guidelines have not been emphasized to teachers and due to our cyber-nature, consistency among educators and instruction is a reoccurring issue. Although the raise of cyber-education is a response to 21st century living where ‘students and parents alike have grown to expect and demand the ability to customize various aspects of their lives” (Public School Review, 2016, para. 16), many question whether this form of education can adequately prepare students for 21st century learning. Thus Agora Cyber Charter School often fails to challenge students, create variety or relevance, or support integration and must be restructured to adequately follow a STEM format for learning.
Virtual High school is becoming more and more popular. But is it really the best option for your child? My parents are planning on sending me to a virtual high school. But I totally disagree with that Idea. Here's why. There's no doubt that online schooling can’t get you the proper education that you need, But if your alwaysways on the computer, surrounded by no one but yourself and maybe a parent. Then how is it possible that you will be able to learn any social skills. When you first think of this it may not seem like a bad thing, but when really, it’s a huge issue that will shape your lifestyle.
Education is an important part of people’s lives; it will either make them or break them in the future depending on the careers they choose. Education is greatly diverse today in comparison to the 1950s because of advancements in teaching and other great inventions that provide easier techniques of teaching. One major issue that has been raised is distant learning courses and online education.
Students need to have a space that they can call their own. The "virtual" classroom should be a place where the students can recognize that education is based on sound pedagogy. This requires trust of the instructor having the best view as "the guide" of the educational experience. Another key to successful on line education is that there has to be an easy was to create web based assignments for the students to turn in. Some students might have some phobias built up over technology, creating a roadblock in the informational highway. Finally, any fears of technology must be dealt with, to insure that the message is getting delivered in a timely manner.
