Creativity and trust are important and beneficial factors for increasing workplace performance. In two case studies, Sid Caesar and Miles Davis virtuoso teams have common themes, such as generating creativity, focusing on trust, and intense time pressures. Virtuoso teams represent a dominate approach to getting work done in a business environment. Creativity enables virtuoso teams to solve problems and leverage opportunities through the integration of divergent thoughts and perspectives. Davis was never content with the status quo; he demanded change and made it happen. To Davis team success meant being a tough leader. If you are a weak leader you will have a weak group. Self-awareness for Davis somehow connected him to being an effective leader. Self-awareness is related to the notion of self evaluation. If you know yourself, then self evaluation is likely to be more accurate (Tekleab, Sims, Yun, Tesluk, & Cox, 2008). The effects of leader self-awareness on follower self-leadership are more salient or direct in regard to empowering. Davis empowered his teams by challenging their talent to a higher level of performance. Four Cs Model and the DeepDive Concept The Four Cs are determinants of high-performing teams: context, composition, competencies, and change management skills (Dyer, Dyer, & Dyer, 2006). Visioning and directing was necessary contexts for Caesar and Davis to build virtuoso teams. Both leaders with a vision and the ability to direct virtuoso teams produced sustainable results that lasted longer than usual in the entertainment and music business. In an effective team, each member must understand the context of the team’s work to the greatest degree possible. That includes understanding the relevance of his or her job and how it impacts the effectiveness of others and the overall team effort.
