This assignment will explore the meaning of vision within early years’ and the theories and principles of leadership, examining the role of people management, models of staff development; problem solving skills and the importance of communication within a pre-school provision. There are numerous definitions of the terms ‘leadership’ and ‘management’. Some theorists believe they are synonymous with one another, whereas others believe both terms have a specific role and purpose and are, in effect, very different from one another. Harvard Business School professor John Kotter (2001), believes that management and leadership are distinct but complementary and that one cannot function without the other. Early Years Matters (2015) define leadership as: Providing direction and exercising influence…being able to inspire others, having a clear vision, thinking creatively, having a problem-solving approach to difficulties and a commitment to partnership working; as well as developed interpersonal skills. Law and Glover (2000, cited in Rodd, 2006) provide a clear insight on the differences between the two roles. They state that it is the responsibility of the manager to deal with the essential and specialised aspects of managing a pre-school, for example, their role will be to deal with planning and decision making, formulating policies; organising and clarifying work roles amongst staff, co-ordinating the organisation; encouraging staff contribution and taking responsibility for
