Visual Argument: Killing Machines
Cigarettes are known to be the number one risk factor for lung cancer and yet people continue to smoke at least a pack daily. Cigarettes contain chemicals that make smoking it addicting, which is the why quitting can be such a challenge. The photographer of this picture makes a strong argument by showing that a cigarette is basically a killing machine.

4). What are some of the conditions necessary for argument to work best? To work best, a productive and potentially successful argument, whether presented in writing, in speech, or in images, require the following elements: An Issue, An Arguer, Audience, Common Ground and A Forum.
The health warning on a package of cigarettes: This title could argue that cigarettes are a self-destruction weapon to humans.
Carrying the dog represents the relationship the speaker had with his ex-girlfriend before they separated. When the speaker awkwardly steps onto the scale with the dog and “subtracts [his] weight” (Collins 7), he is symbolically removing himself from the relationship and can now assess what remains. Just as it was easier to discover the dog’s weight after removing himself from their sum, he had not “figured out what [she] amounted to” (11) until after he had left. The last stanza indicates that with his new-found perspective, he begins to doubt the decision to leave. The symbolism of the the man awkwardly holding the dog allows the reader to easily conjure Collins’ mental state and transition from a general situation to one specific to Collins.
With many decades worth of health data now available, it has never been clearer that smoking is one of the most dangerous habits a person can engage in. It is no wonder, then, that so many smokers are committed to quitting and improving their health.
Cigarettes come from a trend that turns into a habit; That is harmful to human health not only for direct smokers, but also more severely for passive smokers.

We know this statement and we see this in advertisements, in slogans, in posters and televisions everywhere and yet smoking still the leading cause of death in America. According to Centers for Communicable diseases, 2017, smoking is still the No. 1 cause of preventable death in the United States. It kills more people than infectious disease, abuse, firearms, obesity and traffic accidents. Some people do not believe that smoking is harmful to them. Some people do not notice the harm at first and by the time they notice the effects, they are addicted to it already. That is why the Word Health Organization calls it as “gradual killer”. Lastly, according to Sherry McKee, the director of Yale Behavioral Pharmacology Lab, “Most of the smokers think that they can just quit easily at any time and nearly all believe that they won’t be long-term smokers”. These are some of the knowledge gaps in tobacco use.
According to the Healthy People 2020, each year, approximately 480,000 Americans die from tobacco-related illnesses. Further, more than 16 million Americans suffer from at least one disease caused by smoking. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2012). The effect of cigarette smoking is alarming. Use of tobacco in the form of smoking is not only dangerous to the one who is smoking but also to a non-smoker. Tobacco harms a human physically and mentally. Major cause of lung cancer is smoking. It is important to prevent the use of tobacco because it is the largest preventable cause of diseases and death in the United States. Smoking is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. The exposure to tobacco smoking negatively impacts the health of an individual over time by increasing the risks of developing diseases of the respiratory and circulatory systems (Ministry of Health, 2005). In particular, smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer. With repeated exposure, inhalation of tobacco into the lungs causes a build up of tar, altering lung tissue (Cockerham, 2007; Marmot and Wilkinson, 2006). This direct use of tobacco accounts for the death of 5 million people around the world. In the United States, 444,000 deaths per year are attributed to smoking, were 13 years of life lost for a male smoker and 14.5 years lost for a female (Cockerham, 2007; WHO, 2012). In New Zealand, tobacco use is the main cause of preventable death, contributing to around 4600 deaths
Everyone knows cancer is the second leading killer in the United States. As people, we try our best to adapt when we hear a loved one has cancer. The question, “Why?” or “How?” always seems to come across our minds when hearing the diagnosis. Learning these common causes and risk factors may reduce a person’s chances in getting cancer. The most common mainstream product sold to cause cancer is cigarettes. ”Dangerous chemicals are found in tobacco use such as nicotine, Benzene, and Menthol (wood alcohol). Radioactive materials are in the tobacco leaves used to make cigarettes and cigars. Studies have shown the connection between tobacco products and lung cancer. Did you know? Lung cancer is one of the most preventable diseases that exist.
Smoking is one of the main causes of cancer and death in the United States. Any type of tobacco is harmful to the human body. When people smoke, they are suffocating their lungs thus changing the color of their lungs from a reddish pink to a greyish black in the long run. This color change indicates that the lungs are slowly dying; common knowledge amongst people, yet they still ignore these facts. These dangers to human health are the reasons why smoking should be more regulated.

The first cigarettes were made in 1865 by Washington Duke on his 300-acre farm in North Carolina (History of Tobacco). Cigarettes are inhaled and smoke to feel relaxed. Smoking is an activity in which smoke is inhaled from a burning substance. The biggest pro about cigarettes is that cigarettes bring in profit for the government. The biggest con about cigarettes is that they can cause cancer almost anywhere in your body. Cigarettes can cause more deaths than you think.
This paper has discussed ingredients in cigarettes, side effects from cigarettes, and side effects from quitting. Cigarettes are not worth all the damages it does to people's bodies. Cigarettes could permanently damage the lungs and heart, and there is no reversing the damage. Smokers need to put cigarettes down as soon as possible so they do not damage their bodies anymore than they all ready have. In my 18 years, I have known a few life-long smokers so I have seen the negative effects first hand. Today I will be discussing why you should stop smoking cigarettes. First, I will explain the many health risks, then I will talk about how it alters your appearance, and finally I will explain how it affects those around you.
