I decided to begin journal writing several years ago. At first, it was just a way to pass the time however, journaling became more important to me as the years passed. Through writing, I learned a lot about myself and learned to reflect and make better decisions. When I would write, it also enabled me to slow down and enjoy the many experiences throughout the weeks. Vocabulary can also greatly be enhanced through writing, which has helped me develop better communication skills. Never did I think that through writing, I would be a better person, but I quickly learned that the words I would write were a means to a more meaningful world, filled with more opportunity. The vision of light reflecting off the water and so gently lighting the tree tops was a peace I hadn’t felt in weeks. As I looked to my left, a fish jumped from the water and then quickly crashed below, swimming away. These things seemed to move slower than my typical world, and as I finished reading my entry I realized that this was a way to help me settle; it was a way for me to remember to slow down and enjoy the life I was living. That day, it was as if my own writing spoke to me, reminding me that there was so much more to the world than I had been experiencing. I decided that whenever I had a major decision to make I would write about my choices and only then, decide. Not only was writing a way to measure pros and cons, but it also often reflected my true feelings on something, revealing feelings I really didn’t think through. On one occasion, I was deciding between two classes. I had made up my mind that I had always wanted to take a certain class however, another opportunity presented itself, and so I took to my journal as I had vowed I would do. As I researched, and wrote about what I would learn in each class, I quickly changed my mind. The second class, to which I had never given much thought, offered so much more that could help me in the future. In my opinion, writing journal is one of the most effective way to improve my writing
I’m not a notable writer, nor have I really wanted to join the writing industry. However, I have been interested in other people’s writing. From their deep meanings, content, and different formats/styles. It’s a wondrous creation made from within our imagination and experiences. It has inspired me to write too. I’ve been writing most of my life that it has become a necessity. And now from my past experiences with writing, I try my best to improve my skills as a writer for the future.
Every word written or read is a chance to better yourself or someone else. Our words carry an enormous significance with them. Even if a person doesn’t enjoy reading or writing, they can not deny that fact. I bring this up because reading and writing has shaped me into the person I am today. So it is no surprise that I am willing to rant about how great reading and writing can be.
I’ve also read that journaling, as an added bonus, can improve your health; I could certainly benefit from that. Apparently, studies have shown that people who write about their feelings whether good ones or even bad can experience less stress and even increase stronger immune systems. Writing makes me feel like I am talking to someone that is always listening. Getting to write down my thoughts is like talking to my future self. For example, I do like writing journal entries because I can go back and read it later in life. Just one short paragraph can explain how I felt at that time and what was going on. It also shows your improvement. Going back and looking at my old writings give me a pretty good idea of how much better I have gotten at
All my life I have been a lazy person, doing just enough to get by. Most of the time, in high school, I was content with just a “C”. The only time I wasn’t, was if it was a class I liked, and I paid attention to. If this was the case, I could have received a 99% on a test and been dissatisfied. But, for the rest of my classes, which were most of my classes, that I didn’t like, I never paid attention to or did homework, and I still managed to do well on tests. So basically I didn’t do anything except take tests and I still got satisfactory grades. In school I was so lazy that there could have been a project due worth about 20% of the final grade and I still wouldn’t do it.

At a young age, my skills were limited, I had little knowledge about writing. While in elementary school, writing was introduced to allow us as a way to express what was on our minds. Our assignments consisted of writing in our journals daily. In the beginning, writing didn't really appeal to me. I found it to be boring and time consuming. For many people reading and writing are the most fundamental skills a person can learn, it can also greatly influence a persons cognitive thinking capacity and the sharing of information with others. However, in some parts of the world, people still do not have access to education or the ability to learn to read and write. Lacking the skill to read and write can make things tough for some one in todays society, however with the right resources and mentors to support, one can find a hidden passion for reading and writing. For me, reading and writing has never been one of my greatest skills, I had always struggled throughout my younger years of schooling to keep an interest. As of today, reading and writing has made a great impact on my life, especially in the last few years since I began college.
When I was in elementary school before 5th grade, I had to write everything. Essay’s, short story’s, book reports. In my opinion it was not fun. I had a hard typing writing papers because I hold my pencil different than others. It set me back.
Writing became a way for me to express other feelings throughout my young years, but I always ended up writing in notebooks about how I was lonely and felt that I was the source of everything wrong in my life.
I became an internal person in an externally encouraged world. Almost naturally, writing became my ironic way of expression. Writing has always played a huge role in my life. I’ve been reading writing for as long as I can remember as I have an immense love of reading. This love would grow into a love for writing as well; I still stumble upon journals and writings from my five-year-old self about the happenings in my kindergarten class. Out of all the investments in life we make, whether they be financial, spiritual or relationship investments, the most important investment we can make is an investment in ourselves. One way to commit to this investment is through daily or weekly journaling. As Hiemstra (2001) Stated, journaling is “an investment in yourself through a growing awareness of personal thoughts and feelings”(p.23). The awareness of one’s thoughts and feelings is very important to monitor as one can become stuck in a cycle of rumination. Focusing ones attention on emotional and cognitive aspects means this rumination can be avoided by bringing acceptance to past emotions. Journaling helps this cycle of rumination by setting realistic expectations for ourselves and by providing solutions. One of the most beneficial styles of journaling would be journaling about future personal goals, which can have the effect to bring a certain self-awareness to an individual. Other beneficial styles of journaling include expressing gratitude for the positive aspects in our lives and reminiscing about past positive experiences.
