Vocabulary: How Writing Changed My Life

I decided to begin journal writing several years ago. At first, it was just a way to pass the time however, journaling became more important to me as the years passed. Through writing, I learned a lot about myself and learned to reflect and make better decisions. When I would write, it also enabled me to slow down and enjoy the many experiences throughout the weeks. Vocabulary can also greatly be enhanced through writing, which has helped me develop better communication skills. Never did I think that through writing, I would be a better person, but I quickly learned that the words I would write were a means to a more meaningful world, filled with more opportunity. The vision of light reflecting off the water and so gently lighting the tree tops was a peace I hadn’t felt in weeks. As I looked to my left, a fish jumped from the water and then quickly crashed below, swimming away. These things seemed to move slower than my typical world, and as I finished reading my entry I realized that this was a way to help me settle; it was a way for me to remember to slow down and enjoy the life I was living. That day, it was as if my own writing spoke to me, reminding me that there was so much more to the world than I had been experiencing. As I walked on the dirt path towards home I vowed to continue writing, and I vowed to write positively about the wonderful world that surrounds me every day. I decided that whenever I had a major decision to make I would write about my choices and only then, decide. Not only was writing a way to measure pros and cons, but it also often reflected my true feelings on something, revealing feelings I really didn’t think through. On one occasion, I was deciding between two classes. I had made up my mind that I had always wanted to take a certain class however, another opportunity presented itself, and so I took to my journal as I had vowed I would do. As I researched, and wrote about what I would learn in each class, I quickly changed my mind. The second class, to which I had never given much thought, offered so much more that could help me in the future.
