Understanding the earth is important, as humans need to ensure that their activities efficiently utilize the resources in the planet without causing destruction. Learning earth science also enables individuals to learn various features of the world so that they can predict and prevent devastating events. Volcanic eruptions are a fundamental aspect of earth science and occur as various objects such as gases, tephra, and lava is expelled from the earth through a volcanic vent. Volcanic eruptions may cause different devastating effects to humans and other creatures surrounding the area. Material ejected from the volcanic vent can destroy the habitats of living organisms due to its heat. Volcanic activity can also cloud the air with ash making it hard for airplanes to navigate in their normal routes (Lu et al. 2016). Therefore, it is important for a scientist to study the volcanic patterns to determine the effects of the volcanic action and to determine the viability of living in various areas. Volcanic eruptions are classified into different classes based on their intensity and reasons for formation while they also have distinct advantages and disadvantages. Volcanic eruptions are caused by the convergence and the divergence of tectonic plates (Bell, 2011). The earth is divided into 17 main rigid tectonic plates, which float on a hot soft layer of the earth’s mantle.
