When giving medical care and treatment to kids especially, you are helping an entire family. Their world comes apart when their child is injured or sick. In the future, I hope to one day be a pediatrician and restore that world for parents and their children. By volunteering at various hospitals, and especially Texas Health Plano, I will be broadening my horizons as well as experiencing a small part of the medical field which I someday hope to be a part of.

Pursuing a career in nursing brings me an internal satisfaction beyond words. I enjoy being around people and I feel with my caring and empathetic soul, I can use that to heal the mind, body and souls of my patients. My reason for wanting to return to college comes from my desire to be in a position to make an impact on someone’s life. In my current position I provide assistance to individuals on a daily basis, but it is not satisfying my need to help heal. I am currently 30 years old and I love children and I am eager to work with children and when I would like to know about their little bodies so that I can be aware of how to help them. Texas Children’s Hospital is one of the most renowned hospitals in the U.S. It is a prestigious facility that has an amazing group of staff and health care providers that ensures the facility lives up to its name. The mission statement the facility holds is “To create a healthier future for children and women throughout our global community by leading in patient care, education and research”. My mission is “to live life with faith, honesty, and compassion knowing that each day is not our own and always remembering that we are each made for a greater purpose that can be fulfilled by hard work and dedication.” I feel like I would be a great fit for this facility, because I have a passion for serving children.

If I were to give each of you $100 right now, wouldn’t you be happy? (Attention) Well I can’t do that. This is because even when something seems free, there is always a net financial investment. This is clearly seen through the volunteers of the hospital. Today I will show you the financial impact that a volunteer has on the hospital and patient experience. I have been able to see the joy on a child’s face when they finally make a shot, the joy on their face when they learn how and when to cross the street, and the joy on their face when they realize that they have the potential to be anything they want to be in life. Being able to watch this all happen has allowed me to realize that I want to see these kinds of amazing reactions every day for the rest of my life. On top of this, I want to be the one to allow them to have this reaction. To me, it is the best feeling in the world when I know that I have helped someone do something they felt they couldn’t do before. I am passionate of becoming a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. I got inspired to work in this field when I interned at hospitals such as the Veterans and at Community Regional Center in the children's clinic. I have always worked with children and like being part of their lives. I have always wanted to work with small children in the medical field. After doing research on nursing specialties i found the neonatal. Neonatal nurses work with babies that are born either too early(premature) and/ or are suffering from a life threatening situations such as drug addiction or born with aids. This would be a very tedious job because these babies are most of the time very tiny and the equipment you work with is tiny and if you're not careful you can instantly kill them or seriously injure them. One reason i drew interest in this field was because i have had family members who were born with something wrong or were premature. One of them was actually my brother. He was born with low blood sugar and digestive problems. If it wasn't for the nurses and the doctors my baby brother wouldn't have grown up as healthy as he did. I have had a passion for becoming a healthcare provider for children for quite a while (for a long time). Children are one of the most important individuals of society because they are the future and will one day be in charge of the world. Their health at a young age is indicative to how their health will be as adults. Childhood has a great effect on how a person turns out to be so I hope to help children I hope to use prevention and education to preserve and restore the health of my patients. My career goals are to prevent children from having to spend time in hospitals or in pain and to help them live out their life and dreams to the fullest extent. Children play a very large role in their families, and when a child becomes sick, the whole family becomes distressed. Pediatricians not only heal children, but they help and prevent a family from suffering. I love medicine and children, and I hope to combine these two passions by becoming a pediatrician.

My true passion for helping others begins with my mother. My mother, Carla worked for Gallipolis Developmental Center for many years as a nursing assistant. Unfortunately, she sustained a severe back injury that ended her career. In 2006, she was rushed into emergency back surgery after several herniated discs ruptured. This left her with severe back pain that she will suffer with for the rest of her life. As a result, I learned to care and to have compassion for those in need. Visiting a hospital and seeing what the children need or playing with them makes them very happy. Volunteering at a hospital lets me see the hospital from an insider's perspective. Before beginning my volunteer work I faced quite a dilema. Where could I influence children, help them develop their leadership potential, educate them about agriculture, and have fun-all at the same time?

Seeing all of the things going on in the hospital influenced me to really pursue this profession. What also influenced me was seeing how my pediatrician cared for other kids and was always taking good care of not only myself, but others as well.

There was a number of events that confirmed to me that child nursing was the only career I'd fully enjoy. From a young age I'd always had an interest in the medical industry and was drawn to care for others. When I was nine, my little brother took ill with menangitis and MRSA. At the start of this year my little sister was in a neo-natal intensive care unit in an induced coma and less than a month later my little brother followed with a burst appendix. Needless to say, I've had my fair share of hospitals. As I was there so often, I attempted to shadow some of the nurses that were taking care of my family. They were very friendly and would teach me things like needle techniques and the different types of drip function. When my sister was diagnosed with down's syndrome, I attempted to pay as much attention as I could to the learning disability expers that came to talk to my family. They successfully put us at ease, fully believing that these learning issues are not scary or difficult if known how to approach them. On top of this, I've really attempted to invest my time with children more; As the oldest of nine children this hasn't been that difficult. I've always been on call to help with trips to hospitals, babysitting and sometimes just changing a nappy. I've also given up time to help my two of my friends who are foster careers. I've helped babysit a number of children with different backgrounds. Some with severe learning problems and some with neonatal abstinence syndrome.
