In the winter of the tenth grade, I was unexpectedly woken up by my mom, who was informing me that I had to volunteer for the Breakfast with Santa event hosted by CP24. In the moment, I was so angry because I had already completed my volunteer hours and now, what was supposed to be a relaxing Saturday turned into one where I would have to volunteer for hours. Upon groggily waking up, I realized that it was six in the morning, pitch black outside and snowing profusely. At this point, I’m begging my mom not to make me go, especially since I was already done my volunteer work. However, she told me that I would make a huge difference to the event as well as, the children that were going to be there. Unconvinced, I angrily climbed into the car and prepared myself …show more content…
I couldn’t find one. I was so upset my mom signed me up for such an early project without even asking me if I wanted to do it. I had no friends there, I was really looking forward to sleeping in and once again on top of everything I had already completed my …show more content…
At this point, I was getting bored so I decided to start a conversation with the friendly looking kid, his name was Jesse. Talking while doing the work definitely made the time go by much faster and I also learned why he enjoyed volunteering so much. He mentioned to me that he did this event every single year despite already amassing 300 volunteer hours. He continued to volunteer because, while it may seem like a lot of work, the expression on the face of the less fortunate children at the end is well worth it. I assumed he meant that the gifts we distributed gave the kids a lot of joy, however, I was in for a surprise. As I talked to Jesse, my attitude towards the tasks began to improve and time began to go
During my volunteer hours I learned a lot about my own community I that I have not been able to experience. For example I have never been able to participate in so many writing programs and workshops in my local high school, this is because I also did not attend my own local high school because my mother did not allow me to instead, she asked me to attend a charter school. By partnering with LA826, I was able to attend different writing workshops where I would help different high school student write essay, cover letters, and personal statements. Furthermore I believed that most of my activities consisted of just being able to listen to some of the students.
Volunteering gives me the opportunity to be there for someone and to change people’s lives including my own. Volunteering to me is a way of giving back to the community or someone in need of help. For as long as I can remember I have always had the passion for helping people especially children and the aged, thus my interest in nursing. Any opportunity to perform an act of kindness made me happy that at least I could be of help to someone. From taking care of my siblings and cousins, babysitting, helping friends and among others. Of the many goals I have in life the most important one is to provide help to those in need through my commitment of service. I volunteered at a daycare school closer to me and
If I were to give each of you $100 right now, wouldn’t you be happy? (Attention) Well I can’t do that. This is because even when something seems free, there is always a net financial investment. This is clearly seen through the volunteers of the hospital. Today I will show you the financial impact that a volunteer has on the hospital and patient experience. (General Purpose) We will look at the costs of running a volunteer program, the financial return volunteers provide, and the invaluable impact on the patient experience in a hospital. (Preview)
So, my friend and I gladly agreed to help him carry all his food and followed the boy to his apartment. When we got there, he opened the door and I was absolutely astonished at what I saw. Never in a million years would I have guessed that this boy who was always smiling and as happy as could be lived in a place that had only two pieces of furniture, an old falling apart couch and fridge with no food. This showed me that you can never really know what's going on in someone's life. The happiest of people could be going through some of the worst times of their lives. This experience and many others that I’ve had through my NCL experience are the reason that I love community service so much. Not only do I have the ability to impact someone's life through each charity I help, they also have an impact on me. I find charity work to be my biggest interest because I love seeing the impact I can have on someone’s life that they may have never had before. I am excited to continue my community service work throughout my college experience and look forward to finding a way that I can include this passion in my chosen major or future line of
The theme of Catholic Social Teaching my service was under was “Call to Family, Community, and Participation.” For most of my service hours I ran volleyball camp at school, and I also ran concessions. This falls under “Call to Family, Community, and Participation” because it helps individuals grow not only in a sport but also a community. As they are participating and learning new skills they are also learning life lessons and making friends.
Our advisory was invited again to volunteer at YMCA since we did such a successful and fun job last time for the Healthy Kids Day event in April. For this community service, we helped set up a talent show they were hosting. This show was where kids had been preparing for weeks to this day. The kids got to sing, dance, and just mess around. While the kids were partying, the volunteers were at stations where the kids could create things. One station was for crafting with pencils, one was for creating grape caterpillars, and the last one was for serving people popcorn and drinks which was the one I worked at. The kids were very hungry because four pounds of popcorn was all gone before the show started. Four pounds is a lot especially since popcorn
There's a tired saying “walk a mile in my shoes...” that's been modified to all extremes.
I didn’t expect the peacefulness I got from doing this activity. Through this activity, I realized that it’s not only the adults giving and teaching children, but that sometimes it’s the children doing something amazing for the adults. And as such, this was an amazing experience. If I had just talked about the importance of helping the children, I would have never gotten to experience this, emphasizing the importance of not waiting around but getting up and doing something. Through observing those who had been doing this activity longer than myself, I realized that they probably gained the same conclusion of joy and happiness gained through this activity. The veterans didn’t speak of this as a volunteer activity or something to help the children of the community, although they did acknowledge the importance of doing something like this with the children of Lakeland. The other volunteers viewed this activity as something fun. Something they themselves are lucky to experience. They viewed what they were doing as not them blessing the children, but the children blessing them, and I thought that was amazing. And while there were some experienced members of the group, I didn’t feel as if there was any pressure of rank, I played and had fun with the children just as any more experienced
Peace Corps Volunteers are widely dispersed in the countries where they serve. However, Peace Corps medical supplies are often located at the post headquarters which can be over a days travel for many Volunteers. When Volunteers use the medical supplies that have been provided by Peace Corps they need a way to request replenishment of their supplies so the medical staff can send them out with the next quarterly replenishment schedule.
I have been participating in 4-H since 4th grade. During all that time, I have done multiple volunteering acts to help the community I live in. Each year, my 4-H club works a four hour shift in the food stand, followed by a 45 minute shift of the Pavilion. I have helped someone who has needed it, whether it’s taking someone’s order of food, or letting a community member know rules and regulations of the Pavilion. By volunteering at the 4-H food stand, it has tremendously helped other 4-H members and the community because it lowers their membership fees, it has allowed 4-H members to be able to go to leadership trips, or other trips, at a lower cost, and lastly, because it allows everyone to have a large variety of fantastic food all day!

This is a picture of me volunteering at my town’s food pantry with my friends. On this particular day, I had started the morning upstairs in the clothing department sorting new donations. At the bottom of the bin, hidden behind some plastic bags was a stuffed animal: Donkey from Shrek movie. Aly and I started reminiscing about the first time we watched that movie together as I placed it on the shelf. We then took the elevator down and headed to the pantry. We packed bags full of food for hours. When there were no more bags to be packed, we organized, restocked, swapped takebacks, the usual Wednesday morning rundown. Eventually, with our shift almost up. we sat down on the fridges for a moment before we logged in our hours. And there, out through
What did meet with considerable success was the formation of local ‘Volunteer Training Corps’. We have become very familiar with the BBC Television programme 'Dad’s Army' based on the exploits of the Home Guard during the Second World War. What is not so well known is that almost a quarter of a century earlier, there was a similar organisation formed during the 1914-1918 War.
She was ecstatic to hear that I wanted to help, and gave me a list of events I could help at. After going to the first one, a Halloween party, I didn’t feel the way I felt after cramming 15 hours of community service into 3 days. Instead, I felt accomplished. Not only were the people at the party super friendly and nice, the party itself was super fun. I was in charge of running different game stations, playing with kids. The kids loved me, and I loved helping them and teaching them the games. I left with a happy feeling, a feeling of doing something good and enjoying it, not doing something “because I had to.” I decided that I would go to the next event on the list she gave me, an ice cream social. Once again, I got to help the kids and help make them happy. When everyone was leaving, the parents would thank me. It was after these two days that I learned community service shouldn’t be dreaded like a “punishment,” forsay, but it could rather be something I did because I enjoyed it. I continued going to the events, and I started to get to know Toni and the children. The kids began to look forward to seeing me, they would talk to me and be happy to see
The summer before eighth grade, I decided that I wanted to start volunteering. After researching many different organizations, I came across Nurses for Newborns, a non-for-profit organization in St. Louis that works to prevent infant mortality by providing families with in-home nursing visits. As a volunteer there, I organize donations and other necessities that the nurses take with them as they visit these families. One day, when I was volunteering, a nurse asked me to help take donations out to her car. As I was carrying the supplies to her, she told me about the family that was receiving these donations. The first time that she visited this family, she noticed that they were using dirty rags in place of toilet paper, unable to afford basic
