Do you think that students should be required to do volunteering to be able to graduate. Many people question this but some people agree that it should. Volunteering should not be required to graduate because it defeats the purpose of volunteering, people may not agree with what they have to volunteer for, and they may not have the time because of jobs or other things they have to do. Being required to volunteer to graduate defeats the purpose of volunteering. Volunteering is freely offering to do something, usually to help people or for other causes. If it is required, then it is not volunteering. Volunteering should be your own choice. Some people may not like what they have to volunteer for. If they are required to volunteer for a certain
Many schools require students to participate in community service, but I think this is a good idea. Many schools do not require students to volunteer in community service. I agree that students should have to volunteer to graduate. I think that students should be forced to volunteer for community service sometime in their high school career as it makes people work and shows them what work really is. It also gets people off there lazy tail.
The fight to not do Community Service to graduate. By reading the article by: Claire Koenig no schools should not require Community Service to graduate from high school. Community Service should be optional you are trying to help the community in your own time not because the school tells you to.
In “Serve or Fail,” Dave Eggers argues that a community service requirement should be set in place for college university students to graduate, thus creating “well-rounded scholars.” According to Eggers, university college students have “many hours in the days and weeks that need killing.” Students having extra time on their hands could easily volunteer for community service, positively impacting their respective communities, as well as gaining knowledge and experience of working with others in a professional setting. Eggers states that there are already some colleges and high schools with community service requirements in order to graduate. While this requirement could be a strain on the younger levels of education, Eggers believes a requirement set for university college students could work because they generally are not “boxed-in by family and after school obligations,” as well as being able to handle the extra task.
How many people do you know that volunteer? How many are forced to do it? United States citizens shouldn’t be required to serve one year of community service between the ages of 18 and 30. By forcing people to volunteer they won’t do it out of kindness, the United States will have a deeper debt, and there is no way to keep track.
Should community service be required in order to graduate ? Do we need more requirements ? By Miriam Dodge. No community service takes away from the meaning of the experience.
The first reason you should volunteer is that it betters the community around you. You can live in the most beautiful city in the world but would not want to live there it was dirty because of a lack of people caring about littering or if there were large amounts of homeless and hungry people because no one volunteered to help build a house or volunteer at a soup kitchen
When a good service becomes mandatory, it loses the effect it had originally. In Volunteering to Graduate: Do We Need More Requirements? by Miriam Dodge, the author makes an important point about community service. “... making a selfless
“Serve of Fail” by Eggers brings up many interesting points as to why volunteering should be a requirement for college students. “Colleges should create in their students a lifelong commitment to volunteering,” he said while pointing out that college students are uniquely suited to volunteering. He stated that America would gain millions of volunteer hours and it would help colleges bridge the gap between the academic world and the world beyond it. I agree that colleges should make volunteering a requirements for students and I support Eggers argument, but have a different opinion on some of his points.
Should student service learning hours be mandatory for high school graduation ? There are some schools who have this mandatory rule that students have to do community hours in order to graduate. Community service shouldn’t be a request in order to graduate because that is unfair for some of the students who don’t like to do community service and don’t want to be any part of that. Yes doing community service is amazing and a wonderful thing to help out our community but would you rather have someone who is forced to do it or someone who gladly does it because they want too ?
Surrendering my free time to serve others, is often times not something I crave to do. Selfish ambitions take over, and consequently, I participate in activities I find pleasing to me rather than others. However, when I take the time to assist others and take action in my community, I have found that it is a rewarding experience. Volunteering has never led me to anything negative, and it has allowed me to be a part of a positive and uplifting experience. My desire to volunteer may consume my time, but the countless rewards I receive from volunteering are priceless. Offering my time to organizations has allowed me to become more humble, see the happiness it brings to people, and improve my social skills.
Isn’t it a little ironic having forced and volunteer in the same sentence? Well, that’s my mother for you. She wants me to be a doctor. I’m definitely not going to, but she doesn’t know that yet. So I have to volunteer like every other week for my resume that I really don’t care about.
Most colleges look for extracurricular activities such as students who have participated in their share of volunteerism as it helps recognize students apart from the large number of applicants who have applied as well. So if schools automatically had kids volunteer then there would be a better chance (with their GPA’s) to be accepted into the college they prefer. As well, the schools that support the students would have a proud reputation and strong educational ratings. It also helps students develop civic and social responsibility skills and become more responsible in the long run. Therefore these actions allow students to take what they've comprehended and use it apart from the classroom, learning that what they have learned can be used in
I do not agree that it is a requirement to volunteer because to be a volunteer means to have a choice to do that activity and being forced is not volunteering. Some people might have a job and won't have time for volunteering and that can affect their graduation. School already forces you to do so much to graduate and that is just too much for one person to worry about. If there is a major injury in a sport a person might not be able to volunteer and then with the school rules you can't graduate so this is not a smart idea.
When it comes to high school and junior high doing community service I’m kind of in the middle, you do really have a choice but if you don’t want to do it then don’t sign up. Community hours or Volunteer work is not required to graduate. Community Service is a choice, when you signed up for EAST or another extra-curricular activity you are required to do so. Many people believe that community service isn’t a choice, or there forced to do so. Volunteer work or Community Service promotes great citizenship and shows that you are willing to help people or communities in need. I think that yes, you should be required to do theses hours, but only if you have signed up to do them. From the http://www.debate.org “There are many benefits of doing community
Nowadays, it is very difficult to get a job without a College Diploma. Our ever-increasing demands on student’s academic performances have insured well-educated adults, but what we have failed to focus on is the vital component of volunteerism as an integral part of rearing well-rounded adults. College students should be required to complete a year of community service/volunteer work before they can graduate, in order to create mature and caring adults and versatile future leaders. By mandating all College students across the United States of America to add another year to their studies and use this year for community service/volunteer work only, we will be able to increase their knowledge of community need, civic responsibility, and allow
