Voxi Langauge Analysis: Keyed In

The opinion piece, “Keyed In” (23/5/2009), by Voxi presents the issue of new technology as a dichotomy between those in favour of the issue, and those in opposition, with no regard for any opinion in between. Voxi’s tone is scathing in reference to opposition to new technology, and has only the highest praise for those in agreement with new technology. The picture embedded in the text provides visual support for new technology. Voxi segregates these two groups and investigates the comparison to geniuses of the past, on order to position the reader to support new technology.

Voxi presents those in opposition to new technology as old fashioned and to be mocked. They begin by patronising the groups that are …show more content…

This underhanded dismissal is constructed carefully, and works together with the patronising tone of the previous description, “naturally afraid”, “challenged” and preferring the “the safe, the predictable”, all suggest a cowardice in the opposition to the new technology. This description is intended to influence the reader to view this kind of group as undesirable, and in reducing the power of the group by ridiculing them so, Voxi attempts to position the reader to believe that new technology is advantageous and should be welcomed. This flattery largely focuses on verbs, and optimism to portray this group as selflessly trying to change the world. The colloquial language and enthusiastic tone is somewhat contagious by convention, and the open ended and vague nature of the compliments invites the reader to think of all the good the technology could be doing. This allows the reader to feel included because they are led to identify with this group, and thus are more likely to align themselves to Voxi’s position. Voxi compares the pro-technology group to “pearls”, a universally recognisable allusion to something precious. Although Voxi admits that this analogy may be slightly excessive, they maintain that it is the enthusiasts that have progressed humanity. The picture embedded in the text depicts a human head, with microchips seeming to be coming from the brain. Despite the objectively fantastical nature of this concept, the almost diagram-like illustration suggests scientific involvement. This illustration is intended as a visual representation of how the use of technology and the exchange of information digitally could lead to
