Voxi Langauge Analysis: Keyed In
The opinion piece, “Keyed In” (23/5/2009), by Voxi presents the issue of new technology as a dichotomy between those in favour of the issue, and those in opposition, with no regard for any opinion in between. Voxi’s tone is scathing in reference to opposition to new technology, and has only the highest praise for those in agreement with new technology. The picture embedded in the text provides visual support for new technology. Voxi segregates these two groups and investigates the comparison to geniuses of the past, on order to position the reader to support new technology.
Voxi presents those in opposition to new technology as old fashioned and to be mocked. They begin by patronising the groups that are

This underhanded dismissal is constructed carefully, and works together with the patronising tone of the previous description, “naturally afraid”, “challenged” and preferring the “the safe, the predictable”, all suggest a cowardice in the opposition to the new technology. This description is intended to influence the reader to view this kind of group as undesirable, and in reducing the power of the group by ridiculing them so, Voxi attempts to position the reader to believe that new technology is advantageous and should be welcomed. Later in the opinion piece, Voxi suggests that those hostile to the concept of new technology are incapable of coping with the changes, declaring it is a “fundamental challenge”, this, in addition to Voxi’s later mention of “older people” largely comprising the disapproving demographic, suggest an inability, or weakness rather than just dislike. This distinction proves important in ridiculing those in opposition to what Voxi proposes as the …show more content…
Voxi offers an alternative to the patronising description that is given for the opposition in the form of an admiring description of a group “fired up by new things”, “excited by the possibility of the unknown”, a group that sees “possibilities for making things better”. This flattery largely focuses on verbs, and optimism to portray this group as selflessly trying to change the world. The colloquial language and enthusiastic tone is somewhat contagious by convention, and the open ended and vague nature of the compliments invites the reader to think of all the good the technology could be doing. This allows the reader to feel included because they are led to identify with this group, and thus are more likely to align themselves to Voxi’s position. Voxi compares the pro-technology group to “pearls”, a universally recognisable allusion to something precious. Although Voxi admits that this analogy may be slightly excessive, they maintain that it is the enthusiasts that have progressed humanity. The picture embedded in the text depicts a human head, with microchips seeming to be coming from the brain. Despite the objectively fantastical nature of this concept, the almost diagram-like illustration suggests scientific involvement. This illustration is intended as a visual representation of how the use of technology and the exchange of information digitally could lead to
Brooke Gladstone and Josh Neufeld are the authors of the article “The Influencing Machines”. This article is about technology and is written through a comic-style form. Gladstone’s main idea on this article is that we should not fear technology. Gladstone’s and Neufeld’s comic-style article about technology is the best way to convey her argument because it gives visuals to express her argument, has a different form of arrangement of her details and thesis, and she gives examples of modern technology that should not scare us.
When writing about a contradicting passage towards a certain subject, especially about the electronic devices, the author must include both possible arguments from both sides. However, in this writing, Richard Louv didn’t demonstrate any positive effects of technology , with evidence such as “Cash-strapped municipalities hope corporations agree to affix their company logo on parks…”, and “... the logical extension of synthetic nature is the irrelevance of “true” nature.” These two quotes from the passage structurized an opinionated view, it built a sense of bias by having the second quote
Things have changed in the last ten years. Look around. The phones, computers, and and other electronic devices looked much different in 2007. As technology marches on, we as a society continue to make efforts to better ourselves. In these endeavours, we tend to do away with things that are considered “redundant” or “old-fashioned”. However, as technology continues to improve, there will always be opposers. Think -- how many times have you heard someone complain about the technology and behaviour of the newer generation? Most will prefer the familiarity of traditions and old ways of doing things, whether or not those ways are efficient, morally sound, or harmful, such as in the case of “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson.
For ages the older generation has viewed a lot of technology as brain rotting contraptions that kids waste their time on. Their assumption that kids spend too much time on technological
Technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master. This quote by Christian Lous Lange, summarizes the story of the veldt, its morals, and most importantly, society’s views on technology itself. The line where this blurs is one we fear, and usually do not recognize at first. Whether you agree with this quote or not, it is a disturbing perspective on the advance of knowledge. Imagining a world where technology engulfs the mind of the children, poisons them with thoughts of rage and revenge is a world where the next generation is corrupt. When an innocent pure mind becomes so damaged to where a child wishes their caregivers dead, that is the death of an empathetic, working, society.
If you have a screen and can pick up a signal, your mind is still in the same placeless place’(Siegel, 64).This ‘placeless place’ that Siegel talks about is the zone that your mind enters when you stare at a screen too long, and it feels like your mind stops ‘Thinking’ ”.This signifies that the usage of technology allows for you to spend too much time in the device that you are not even thinking anymore(no matter where you/where outlet you are in). This is important because even though there are many people out there attached to their devices it is the person that misuses it that is truly harmful. The technology itself is rather helpful and convenient in many ways that is only bad when used with the wrong purpose.Another announcement of Nables is,“According to a new creed, technologists are turning ourselves, the planet, our species, everything, into computer peripherals attached to the great computing clouds. The news is no longer about us but about the big new computational product that is greater than us” (Vaidnyanathan, 45).In other words the person(Vaidyanathan)is saying that the technology built is superb to that of humans themselves because it is constantly mentioned and used more
When a close friend of Louv had told a salesman that she did not want a backseat television monitor, the man’s “jaw dropped.” This lets the audience see how shocked people can get when someone does not want a new device. Not only was the salesman shocked, but he also “almost refused to let [her] leave until he could understand why” she did not want one. This shows how appalling it is to some when technology is rejected. These hyperboles allows the audience to get a glimpse of how silly people can be when technology is declined.
Many anti-technologist groups derive from Ordnung Amish communities. Most of Amish Communities view technology as a barrier from traditions and society; therefore, they distinguish which device to use for benefits such as windmills, etc. Thinking of the benefits of no technology, I decided to take the challenge to an extent, of no phones, television, or music, etc. for one day. I believed the challenge would’ve been easy, because I rarely watch television, but I was wrong. Throughout the day, I was surrounded by technology, it was difficult to avoid it, when I felt as if it was calling my name. As a result, I had to separate myself from technology. Knowing that I couldn’t fall into technology’s temptation, I went to my room. In my room, there
“Men think that it is essential that the Nation have commerce, and export ice, and talk through a telegraph, and ride thirty miles an hour…”. People in today's society think that it is a need to have the newest and best technology today; however, some people can’t have the latest technology, and they are just as
Technology, an exceptionally natural marvel of today’s world, is persistently upgrading its courses towards enjoyment and gratification. New considerations are converging with every second, and what began as an obscured vision has now turned into a need for all humanity, making them particularly engaged with technological changes. There have been a multitude of deliberations on the subject that in spite of technology’s continuing enhancement on a daily basis, do these elaborate devices give us suitable interests? Is it accurate to say that we are extremely mindful of the two unique sides of a similar mirror, or are we simply familiar with everything around us that we don't try to view the opposing side? Among these open arguments, two that
The current flood of technology has people concerned about its dystopian effect on our future and then those pessimistic views can supersede an optimistic views. “Techno-pessimists often exhibit a deep passion about their particular cause and are typically given more that just the benefit of the doubt in debates about progress and the future; they are treated superior to opponents who challenge their perspective or proposals...Even if their proposals will often fail to bring about the better state of affairs they claim or derail life-enriching innovations, they are more easily forgiven for those mistakes precisely because of their fervent claim of noble-minded intentions.” (Thierer 7) It’s easier to follow a cynic, there is no work involved on our part to prove them wrong. I fear this dystopian view is more prevalent today than that of the utopian view, due to its ability to sound plausible and believable. Also due to the way this view is portrayed by people of a higher class, it creates a feeling in the lower class that we cannot do anything to change the predicament we are
In the article, Neil Postman addressed the big five ideas that are a bit of against technological change and concerned about new technologies in the new millennium. All of his ideas were compelling and impressive with convincing examples and explanations. Out of his five great ideas, the most interesting one that I enjoyed reading was the second idea. He discussed that new technologies bring both the advantages and disadvantages, and also lead people being either winners or losers. I totally agree with his opinion because I feel like this time is the time we experience lots of technological changes, and there are lots of different opinions on that. Obviously, more technologies give us comfort, convenience and easiness. On the other hand, however,
There are, like many other aspects of this film, a large variety of dialectics. The dialectics of this film might be considered the search for why and how technology has grown as large as it has and how that has and/or will impact our society as a whole in the future. The dialectics in this film are achieved by the pursuant of interviews of those from the younger generation and then are applied as a whole towards the film in order to educate the viewers on the topic at hand.
Although critics say that new technology is bad, it should not be abandoned. Technology such as drones, video games, and Braille printers can better the today world. The events that humans have trouble with today could be solved by the new machines and tools that are being created. Although this is true, technology, as an example, can be used for the better or the
When you think of technology, you would think of how great it is to exist in a world full of technology, or how great technology is in all its wonders. You imagine what the next advancement of technology would be, or look like. You may probably not be able to imagine the next advancement of technology, as it is already great the way it is. Well, I’m sorry to say that technology is not all cupcakes, rainbows, and hugs. If you are a tech lover, please disregard this article. Read at your own will. Also, I would like to clarify that I am not anti-technology, but only simply showcasing that other side of technology. The side that is full of flaws that become ways to ruin human life, and the world. Today, I will talk about a new device called
