Brian Mendoza Mr.Baker Period 5 World History 11 December, 2017 WW1: The Great War World War 1 also known as the Great War was a bloody war happening across Europe which was between The Triple Alliance(Central Powers) and Triple Entente(Allies) which were the 2 alliances during the war. There was a great number of causes which was debated by historians relating to the beginning of the Great War ranging from the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne and his wife all the way to the alliances which were created between the nations. My thesis for the three main causes of WW1 are the alliances formed between the nations, the assassination of Franz Ferdinand and his wife, and militarism. So in the following paragraphs I will be presenting evidence showing how these causes could have likely been the causes for war. Militarism was a key thing in WW1 due to it causing nations to invest in either improving and making their army bigger to be more powerful than others like how Germany did in a day. Militarism was the glorification of the military which gave the …show more content…
This cause made Austria want to wage war on Serbia, but they needed assurance from Germany to make sure that they will support them once war is declared so that they could help in the invasion and to help with defending Austria from any Triple Entente attacks and Germany did assure them that they would be supported, once Austria got confirmation from Germany it allowed them to have support in the case of an intervention by Russia, France, and Britain as well. So within a week WW1 had broken out and both sides started to attack. After the assassination of Franz Ferdinand Archduke of Austria came a war which would soon be the cause of a shift in power in
World War I, also known as the first World War, or the Great War, was a global war originating in Europe the began on the 28th of July 1914 and lasted until the 11th of November 1918. World War I was a war that was fought between two sides with a few of the World’s greatest Nations of that time. The two sides were Triple Entente which included Britain, France, and Russia, and the Triple Alliance which was consisted of the countries Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. World War I left a mark on history as we know it, what could have possibly led to that war?, What were the underlying causes of World War I?. The major causes of “The Great War” or WWI consist of four long-term causes and one short-term cause. The common acronym that’s used for the four long-term causes to help students remember the causes of WWI is M.A.I.N; the acronym stands for Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism, and the short-term cause The Assassination of the ArchDuke Franz Ferdinand at Sarajevo on the 28th of June 1914. To put all of this in a simpler way the five major causes of WWI was Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism, and the assassination of the ArchDuke Franz Ferdinand. Each of topics played a significant role in the reasons why WWI would begin.
Militarism was felt very strongly in 20th century Europe. Between 1890 and 1914, the countries involved in WW1’s armament growth was tremendous. Germany’s army and navy rose
At the turn of the twentieth century Europe seemed to enjoy a period of peace and progress. Yet below the surface, several forces were at work that would lead Europe into the “Great War”. Some of the causes of WW1 were Nationalism, Militarism, Imperial Rivalries, Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and Alliance.
The three most important underlying cause of World War 1 are militarism, imperialism, and alliance. One of the most important underlying cause of WW1 is militarism. Countries would invest in their army and navy to defend themselves and to be prepared to attack during war. European countries spent millions on their armaments.
Three Causes of World War I World War I and its consequences have dominated European history since 1914. Because of the bitter controversy over the post-war peace treaties, the origins of the war continued to be an issue of utmost political importance in the years to come. The Great War had its roots in 1870 in the grand expansion and uncontrolled ambitions of Bismarck and the new Germany (Wolfson et al 1997). Imperialism, which began to emerge around the turn of the 20th century also played a decisive role. Fights over the colonies contributed to the establishment of complex set of international alliances, which helped to destabilize the European balance of power and when combined with
The definition of Militarism is a government's thoughts that they should keep a military strong to attract countries and to defend their lands. Countries are upgrading their armies and increasing them to fight other countries or get revenge to get stronger. “France wants to recover her lost provinces and take her revenge for the defeats of 1870” (“Germany’s Military Situation”). The evidence shows that France wants to get revenge on Germany because they lost by them and they want to redeem themselves. The cause of WW1 was Militarism because countries were increasing their population of navies and armies to protect their land or go to
Militarism was a long-term cause of World War One due to the length of time it took
Back when World War One existed, there was fierce competition for bigger, better, stronger military forces and naval forces, creating a sense of competition. Environments were created where violence and war was the best solution to handle disagreements or disputes. The armies of both France and Germany had doubled between 1870 and 1914 and strong competition for who was master of the seas, causing other countries to be jealous and feel inferior. The governments were highly influenced by military leaders dominating military leaders within the European countries, increasing defence and arms spending. Militarism not only affected the policy bot however, affected shaped the media, culture and public opinion in the time of WW1.
There are five main causes of World War One. These first of these is militarism. This means the high presence of the armed forces in a country or a high increase of armed forces that results in tension between countries. The second is the alliance system which are agreements between countries that if they should go to war the rest of the alliance must follow, creating tension between different alliances. The third cause is nationalism which is the patriotic value that your country is superior and the nationalistic obligation felt to defend it. The fourth cause is imperialism, in which a country gains land and therefore creates tension between countries competing for the spread of their nation. The final cause of World War One was the assassination
The second cause of World War 1 is the acronym M.A.I.N., it stands for Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism. That acronym is very important in trying to understand what happened during World War 1. First is Militarism, the first is militarism because every country wanted to prove how big and powerful they are and by increasing their military size and power it helped show that. Second is Alliances, it is alliances because in this scenario the more friends the better. Reason is when you have a rival country the more bigger and more powerful friends you have the better leading to someone less likely to attack you. But the system of alliances also led to the beginning of World War One. Because most of Europe got divided into either The Central Powers or the Allied powers. The Central Powers consisted of the countries Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire. The Allied powers consisted Great Britain, France, Russia, and the United States(pg.10 of WW1). Some experts say that if Germany hadn’t made an alliance with Austria-Hungary World War 1 could have been prevented. Thirdly, Imperialism formed when Europeans began colonizing smaller countries. When that happened different
“World War 1 is considered as one of the greatest events of the 20th century where the war lasted for more than four years, occurring from 1914 to 1918 with over thirty-eight million casualties”(Lohr, 2014). The cause of the war has been debated for decades but it is assumed the assassination of Franz Ferdinand by the Serb on June 1914 could have triggered the war. Besides there are certain forces that caused the war such as nationalism, imperialism and military power as many countries believed in economic and military supremacy. Pan-Slavism was a movement that was aimed at uniting all Slave people in the mid-19th century. The movement had its roots based on the romantic nationalism, which based its concept on ethnicity were considered a feature of national identity causing tension of war. This essay discusses some of the reasons America remained neutral to the war. Then, later joining the Great War in 1917 and seeing it through to the end. Consequently, it discusses issues revolving around the Treaty of Versailles and the role President Woodrow Wilson played during the era of the war.
Militarism was a cause of World War I because European nations raced to see who has a better army or navy. The last factor that contributed to world war one was imperialism. Imperialism led World War One because
World War 1 has created a complex debate which has lead us to a maze of interpretations on what caused the war to occur. The advancement of Imperialism and Nationalism are long term causes which allowed the war to come together yet the short term causes such as the alliance system Europe built themselves upon set off the war to take place in 1914. Countries wanted to expand because they thought they were the best and powerful while getting the help from their alliances if needed. “It brought down four European empires and weakened the colonial powers that ended on the winning side, Britain and France; It spawned communism and fascism, and changed relations between europeans and non- europeans, town and country, government and peoples, men
Great War, also known as The First World War, lasted for four year (1914 to 1918). It brought a huge development of war technics and weapons. More number of countries had been involved in the Great War than any previous war. It involved the mobilization of the whole nations, not just an enormous army that turned the war into a “total war”. (Clare 6) However, historians are still arguing about the major cause of the World War I. The major cause will be one of the four long-term causes of WWI, which are Militarism, Alliance, Imperialism, and Nationalism. In my opinion, the two major causes would be Alliance and Nationalism. Alliance is an association between two or more countries for mutual benefits that formed with different treaties, while
Militarism was one cause for the start of WW1. Germany spent millions of dollars to strengthen their military to get it ready for war. Many countries then felt threatened, and this caused them to also put millions into their militaries as well. With having the largest military, Germany was more than ready to to use their army. Germany was so confident that they could win the war with their new army that as soon as war was declared, they didn’t hesitate to be the hammer. But this would be a problem because of the other nations rushing to industrialize their armies. Militarism was a huge factor in the cause of WW1.
