Walking into the Career Fair, I had no clue what to expect. This is my junior year, so I decided that I should go and get a feel of what the job market looks like. I have already had an internship this past summer, so I planned on going to the spring Career Fair. I decided to go to the fall one so I can better prepare myself for spring. I treated the Career Fair the same as I would treat a job interview. The main activity I do to prepare is research, something I really excel at. I first went through all the companies that were participating and selected the companies that were interested in Human Resource positions. From there I narrowed down the companies to approximately twenty companies by interest. I ended with about nine companies. When I pick a company based on interest, I first look at their website. I go to their “About Us” page and learn about their company: present, past and future. This gives me a lot of conversation starters and topics. I also like to read about their values. I like to adjust my skills on my resume according to the company values. I do this to better prepare myself for any questions I might encounter when I am talking to an employer. It also stands out to the employer when they view my resume. When I first walked into The McKimmon Center I was soaked from the downpour outside and suddenly extremely nervous. I walked immediately to the bathroom and made myself presentable. After signing in, I then took 20 minutes to walk around the Career Fair
Considering the fact that I am not looking for a job in the St. Louis area I did not think the Career Fair would be very beneficial to me. However, I decided to take a chance and get all I could out of the fair and I honest believe I got more out of it than I expected. My only regret was that Scheffel Boyle was not there, because they are my top choice for where I want to start my career once I graduate with my MSA and I really wanted to talk to them.
On the other hand, you have external recruiting which is the process of engaging individuals from the labor market outside of the firm to apply for a job (Lussier and Hendon, 172). Some examples of external recruiting would be using advertisements in newspapers, online job websites, career fairs, and referrals from current employees that would help fulfill any open positions (Applegate). If a company is going to promote themselves at a career fair it is important that they prepare in advance. The company must advertise! As obvious as this may seem, some companies do not advertise because they mainly rely on word of mouth. Some good advertising techniques would be to post flyers around local campuses, add a section in the newspaper, advertise on the radio, and use social media platforms. The company could also work with universities to send out an email blast to all of the students letting them know about the career fair so that it draws more potential employees in (“Effective Career Fair Recruiting”). Being a student at Lewis University, lately I have been seeing signs around campus about a career
Even though it was just a project in class, I still took it serious. I chose the job description as a bartender, so I took that role of trying to get hired for that job. My two interviewers was Matt and Cory. We did go last and I thought it was going to be an easy going process that I did noticed that everyone did go through.
With the globalization of the economy and education, the industries and colleges are looking for well-rounded, experienced students to add to their perspective companies and universities. Secondary schools have focused more on college and career readiness courses than ever before. One major trend in college and career readiness is Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, commonly referred to as STEM. An increasing trend to teach these four subjects is introducing the Arts to the classroom. This trend is referred to as STEAM.
The environment/atmosphere at the career fair was amazing. The companies were all engaging and extremely welcoming to all of the students, from my perspective. I wasn’t exactly nervous because I prepared questions to ask each of the recruiters ahead of time. My approach went quite well, and I took the steps that were given to me in class. I introduced myself and started to speak about my life at Indiana State, qualifications, skills, etc. (elevator pitch).
I am documenting my visit to Daniel Hand High School’s Career Fair on March 25, 2018. The Career Fair was a learning experience for me to take with me because the career fair taught me of how I could have many opportunities to explore from than just having one opportunity for your future. However, I am still concerned about my future outlook on a successful career since autism mostly has a negative attention to prognosis. Financial planner was a good suggestion for me to interview because of my outgoing and caring personality in school and my ability to work with percentages in math in and out of school. I was also interested in looking at becoming a speech pathologist in the Career Fair because I want to help those who were just like me when
On the afternoon of October 24th 2014, the EOP freshman were required to attend an EOP career fair. Not only was this a unique one-on-one experience, it was also a great opportunity to get an inside look of what our futures can consist of. During this time, like other students, I was to speak to a couple of people in my career path. Even though, there were a less than five people I spoke to, I managed to ask important and informational questions. To start of the fair, I walked around several times, trying to locate those who I was most interested in speaking with, and on the third time around I spoke to Norelia Cerda- Caldera. The reason I spoke with her was because she received a bachelors in Phycology and Spanish, I found this interesting due to the fact that
I was too nervous to approach students at the career fair to ask them how their experiences were, but luckily I ran into an old friend named Ragav Subramanian who is currently a sophomore at the university. He was kind enough to step aside and answer some questions I had. One of the best tips he gave me was to always
By attending the fair, I learned that I need to improve on my soft skills more. When I was introducing myself to an employer, I did not have much confidence with my introduction.
After attending the PMF Job fair on Monday, I’ve learned more information about the process that I thought would be helpful to pass along.
Sometimes nerves get the better of us during the interviewing process and I feel that is what happened in my case, but I did get the chance to learn alot about the position and the skills you may be looking for. I think I have those skills and I would be so greatful if given a chance to execute them at Daphne East.
The first step in making people like you is to “become genuinely interested in other people,” and “talk in terms of the other person’s interests.” This is a technique that I have found myself using during the interview process for summer internships. I research a company before the interview so that I have a better understanding of it and can ask educated questions about the company. Recruiters are impressed with students who are truly interested in the opportunities their companies provide, and they appreciate it when they can tell that effort has been made to research their company.
In the competitive world today, having a college degree might not benefit a student as much as before, thus opening up numerous questions concerning its necessity. Not only is the number of students desperately trying to enroll in college increasing, but the tuition shoots up as well. However, will college enrollment necessarily be enough to increase your chances of attaining job security? The answer is hotly debated amongst adults and students alike, which opens up the second option for students, that is, joining the work force. Although this option is generally shunned by the new generation, the tough economy and slow restoration makes it quite a desirable choice at the moment. Joining the work force is a hard decision to make as it
Today I had the opportunity to attend the Business and Technology Career Fair. Since I am a junior and previously a business student, I have some experience with this fair. My visit this time was very different from my two prior years since I am now a Kinesiology major and I am somewhat of an outsider to the majority of companies offering internships. Upon reading the requirements of this assignment I was unsure about who I was going to speak with but little did I know I would only have to do half of the work.
I also want to make sure I study the company I am interviewing for. If I can cater the answers to the company’s mission statement or values, I am likely to score some points there. I want to feel confident in what I am talking about. I also what the interviewer to know that I know their company and I will uphold the same values they believe in. Again, this makes me prepared.
