Maya Lin, an architecture student at Yale University, designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, which was just as controversial as the war was. She submitted her design in the nationwide competition being held for the Vietnam Memorial. The memorial itself is made of black granite with the names of every fallen and missing in action soldier. It sits between the Washington and Lincoln memorials on the National Mall. Lin’s design showed the memorial to be V-shaped and sunken into the ground. The Vietnam war itself was not a celebrated past time like the other wars in US history. It was the first loss in America’s entire history. Vietnam was one of the bloodiest wars in American History. It resulted in the deaths of approximately 58,000 U.S. Servicemen. The Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. is a totem to these fallen warriors. In, 1985 Peter Marlow photographed this memorial in his piece titled Washington, D.C. 1985. Vietnam Vet holds an American flag to the Vietnam Memorial. Marlow's photograph addresses the sacrifice of America in Vietnam and the pain left behind by those lost. Marlow shows an anonymous Soldier bowing his head and pressing an American Flag to the Memorial. This photograph is emotional and powerful, stating bluntly just how great of a price America paid in Vietnam. Marlow's use of lines and shapes, conveys to all Americans the oblation of America's sacrifice in the War of Vietnam.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is unlike any other. The names of the casualties are arranged by date of death not in alphabetical order or rank. The black granite turns each visitors own image into a virtual part of the surface. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is one of the most amazing and emotional memorials in Washington (Moeller 1 Pg. 85). “Take a knife and cut open the earth,” she said, “and with time the grass will heal it.” (Maya Ying Lin).

The artist uses patterns o colorful light wash over a wall filled with black silhouettes of paper. It is designed with sharp lines and very defined shapes. It is approximately 37 feet wide in a gallery wall space. This makes it difficult to tell race, gender and age and so this leads a removal of bias and discrimination so the viewer is capable to se the scene for what it is. This works to challenge the racial stereotypes that area accepted.

Everyone has seen a public art, graffiti, statue, street performance or portrait sketching. But what defines a public art? Or, what factors should a successful public artwork have? Level of popularity? Rating on art forum or website? The conspicuous representation? Or the use of color? As the amount of artwork has been dramatically increasing, it gets harder and harder to distinguish street art and public art. Recently, within most artwork it contains more or less some marketing purposes that either target a specific age group or certain job.
Both of these works are street art installments by an anonymous artist in LA who is known as Skid Robot. This artist travels around LA to different homeless areas and spray paints imaginary homes for the homeless to bring awareness to the growing poverty level in LA and the rest of the country. I have been fortunate enough to see one of these installments while driving in Los Angeles and it makes you stop and think about the current poverty situation in our world.
