Walmart Background: Walmart is a retail corporation that has multiple departments in each of its stores around North America. The departments range from clothing, to grocery, to electronics, to many other departments in a Walmart store that will fit a customer’s needs. Walmart is founded in 1962, by Sam Walton, who opened the first Walmart store in Rogers, Arkansas. The Walmart headquarters is in Bentonville, Arkansas. Sam Walton was born in 1918 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. In 1950, Walton moved to Bentonville, Arkansas; where he opened his own store before Walmart was considered an idea, called “Walton’s Five and Ten,” on downtown square in Bentonville. The retail industry has been generally very high when it comes to business for many top retail companies, but there have been other retail companies that have had to close a few stores in recent time as well. Per Tonya Garcia from the website, MarketWatch, has stated “Macy’s Inc., Gap Inc., Sears Holding Corp., and Guess Inc. are among retailers that have announced store closures in recent months.” (Garcia, 2017) This article shows that in the retail industry in recent years, there has been companies like Walmart that have been steady recently; but there have been other big retail companies, such as Sears and Macy’s, that have been on the decline recently to the point where a few places have been closed down. Based on these articles, the retail industry is mostly about which retail company is willing to buy out another retail company to bring in new goods and services for their customers to be satisfied. The retail industry is competitive for the top retail companies in the United States, to the point where most smaller retail companies may end up filing for bankruptcy in the future.
