I spent the entire week people watching everywhere I went! The best place, in my opinion, was Walmart! Don’t get me wrong because I absolutely love Walmart. They are so cheap and I’m just a poor college kid so I really don’t have any other option when it comes to grocery shopping. Although when I am out and about in public I typically do not pay attention to what is going on around me. So having this assignment taught me to take into account what is happening in my surrounding area. I will warn you, some of the things I saw and heard were quite outrageous! But hey, that’s life! On Monday the 29th, I took my little brother to get ice cream at Dairy Queen. Once I parked my car we walked in an got in line. The restaurant was packed with about 10 people in line, three couples with four kids total. The people right in front of us would not stop fighting. I swear they hated each other! Another observation I made was they did not seem very intelligent. Their grammar was about as good as a middle school student who just learned proper English. My brother made the comment “I bet they didn’t graduate high school”, and I nodded my head in agreement. Their outfits were absurd as well, especially in a public setting with small children around. I workout and stop by Starbucks on my way home to grab a Lemon Refresher. When I opened the door a man with bright blue eyes, long brown hair, and grungy clothing greeted me. He shook my hand as I stood in the doorway frightened out of my mind. Now, my mom always taught me the rule “Never talk to strangers”. This man was indeed a stranger! I had never seen him until that day and my first thought was “he’s poor and probably homeless”. But there was something suspicious about the man. Although he looked homeless and sad, the way he spoke made me smile. His words were so kind and the tone of his voice was soft. His hands were rough but his grip was gentle. He offered to buy my drink and told me, “Every pretty girl deserves a free coffee”. I was so touched that out of all the people he chose me to talk to. I nicely declined and ended up paying for his drink instead. The situation was unique because he was the last person I expected to be so kind. His looks and presence were of one who was sleeping on the streets and was in jail for perhaps a robbery of drugs. But his kind and warm personality made me realize that not everyone is how they seem. It takes someone strong and wise to understand those who look but act complete
