I spent the entire week people watching everywhere I went! The best place, in my opinion, was Walmart! Don’t get me wrong because I absolutely love Walmart. They are so cheap and I’m just a poor college kid so I really don’t have any other option when it comes to grocery shopping. Although when I am out and about in public I typically do not pay attention to what is going on around me. So having this assignment taught me to take into account what is happening in my surrounding area. I will warn you, some of the things I saw and heard were quite outrageous! But hey, that’s life! First off I would describe myself as someone who can predict what is happening or what is going to happen in the future by peoples attitudes, reactions, and actions. …show more content…
On Monday the 29th, I took my little brother to get ice cream at Dairy Queen. Once I parked my car we walked in an got in line. The restaurant was packed with about 10 people in line, three couples with four kids total. The people right in front of us would not stop fighting. I swear they hated each other! Another observation I made was they did not seem very intelligent. Their grammar was about as good as a middle school student who just learned proper English. My brother made the comment “I bet they didn’t graduate high school”, and I nodded my head in agreement. Their outfits were absurd as well, especially in a public setting with small children around. The wife was wearing a crop top, (which is basically a half shirt that comes up just above your bellybutton) …show more content…
I workout and stop by Starbucks on my way home to grab a Lemon Refresher. When I opened the door a man with bright blue eyes, long brown hair, and grungy clothing greeted me. He shook my hand as I stood in the doorway frightened out of my mind. Now, my mom always taught me the rule “Never talk to strangers”. This man was indeed a stranger! I had never seen him until that day and my first thought was “he’s poor and probably homeless”. But there was something suspicious about the man. Although he looked homeless and sad, the way he spoke made me smile. His words were so kind and the tone of his voice was soft. His hands were rough but his grip was gentle. He offered to buy my drink and told me, “Every pretty girl deserves a free coffee”. I was so touched that out of all the people he chose me to talk to. I nicely declined and ended up paying for his drink instead. The situation was unique because he was the last person I expected to be so kind. His looks and presence were of one who was sleeping on the streets and was in jail for perhaps a robbery of drugs. But his kind and warm personality made me realize that not everyone is how they seem. It takes someone strong and wise to understand those who look but act complete
I am someone that invariably has a vision of prosperity and is not afraid to take risks -- always willing to do anything for the better of myself and others. I can take initiative when no one else steps up and is ready to accept any of my own mistakes.
Question 1: What were the rights of Walmart, the employer, during these two organizing drives?
Karen Olsson believes that Wal-Mart, the world’s largest retailer company, under pays their employees for the amount of work they do daily. They do not offer good working conditions for their employees or enough medical benefits to support themselves and their families. Sebastian Mallaby says that Wal-Mart is not wrong for the way that they run their business; he feels as though Wal-Mart does their consumers a favor by keeping the wages low and offering “low prices” (620). It’s just business! They have to do what it takes to remain the world’s top retailer and continue to, “enrich shareholders, and put rivals out of business” (620). Karen Olsson and Sebastian Mallaby both address the topic of big
The author of the article “Progressive Wal-Mart. Really”, Sebastian Mallaby claims that Wal-Mart is providing more money to workers outside of the country. For example, the new anti Wal-Mart movie states that chinese workers are getting paid pennies per day, sweating to keep Wal-Mart’s shelves stocked with cheap clothing. Although this may sound like Walmart is taking advantage of immigrant workers, but Walmart is actually helping these chinese immigrant workers by paying them more than they would get working at a chinese farm.

When our professor first presented this project paper to us my mind began to wonder. What is a good company to research and present it to my fellow classmates. My first selection was “Chik-fil-a”, but I wasn’t sure if we could write about fast food franchises. So I continued to brainstorm about a topic to expound on, even going as far as in asking my buddies and co-workers for suggestions. “Walmart”, “National Football League”, “National Basketball Association”, “Nationwide Insurance”, and “LG” were a few ideas that were presented to me. A few of those sounded ok but none really grasp my attention. As I was visiting an outlet mall, I came across Nike store. “Wow that’s going to by my topic of choice”, is what I told myself. Week
One day last winter, I was leaving work and I was approached by a street-person. Living in the city most of my life, I had
The companies I am studying are Wal-Mart and Target. Both are major discount retailers, general merchandisers who compete as cost leaders. These companies both very large, big enough to execute on their strategies effectively. Yet one has chosen the path of international growth and the other has not yet, pending expansion into Canada in 2013.
