In the past, Dahlia had already lost her father and mother. As in chapter one, portraying a significant loss Dahlia suffered, “Maria had been a cousin and a friend. She knew how to touch me, and when to put her arm around my waist and smile at me even when her life was not going well.”As Dahlia expresses her bond with aunt Maria in these words, “She acted like a friend and cousin to me despite the fact she was suffering, she always had a smile on her face.” (Myers 4). The quote reveals that Dahlia was describing the qualities that Maria had, so Dahlia can remember Maria for her sweet personality and kindness shown towards her. The way that Dahlia described Maria using positive words reveals that Dahlia was remembering Maria for her brighter side rather than her darker side, which showed Maria had a great life. Following Dahlia’s decision to attend the conference, Dahlia met a group of teenagers, in which some of them shared their personal stories, which included the hardship moments they went through to form a friendship with each other and attend the conference.
