The book “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” is about a man name Walter Mitty, who daydreams. He goes in and out of them. They happen from something that distracts him. His wife is the one who normally gets him back into reality. The movie is different, but also similar. Walter Mitty daydreams. Walter doesn’t have a wife but he’s crushing on a co-worker. Walter is considered a “loser” because he doesn’t get out much. But he’s like that in both the movie and the book. He has barely to no friends. In the book he doesn’t become happy but in the movie, he has a girlfriend. In the book Walter Mitty daydreams about something that is not happening. But could happen. But in the movie Walter Mitty daydreams about something that isn’t happening either. But also it couldn’t happen. Walter Mitty goes on these adventures about his crush on the co-worker. Or he daydreams about something he wishes he could do. For example in the movie Walter Mitty wishes he could say something back to the guy who is trying to change the company. But he never does. He’s always to scared to say something. So he just lets it happen to him. …show more content…
Which is why he has most of his daydreams. He is always thinking about her. So he incorporates her into his daydreams. But in the book Walter Mitty has a wife. She is the one who snaps him back into reality. Always yelling at him to do things. In the movie though, someone just says his name, for example, “Walter, Walter, Walter, you okay?” Then he snaps back into reality. So the difference is that walter has a crush in the movie and in the book he has a wife that is
In James Thurber's “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” the movie and short story have much different external conflicts. During the short story, Walter's wife is always nagging at him and making his life difficult, while in the movie and it Walter's boss and co-workers who are giving him a hard time.Walter experiences his wife complaining while on their way into town, ¨Not so fast! You're driving too fast...What are you driving so fast for¨ (Thurber 1). He is not paying attention because he is daydreaming about more exciting things than what is going on in his life. In the movie Walter is very busy and nervous so he messes up an assignment and he goes into a daydream. Walter was sitting in the elevator
Another good thing in the movie is the wide range of characters that it features throughout the film. In the short story it only feature two real characters which is fine but it doesn't give us anything more or less it's just them. While in the movie you have Walter, his sister, his mom, his co-workers, boss man, Cheryl, techdude from eharmony, and Shaun. And all those characters end up playing a part somewhere along the timeline of the movie which lets us, the viewer, really soak up the atmosphere and the overall mood/tone of the story because each one of the characters will have their own personality and traits. But we can’t completely over shadow the story because the reason walter day dreams is that his wife just nags him too the point the only source of happiness in his life is the dreams he can use to escape the nagging. In the movie, all the characters let us see more action of the story which is walter trying to find negative 25 which just turns out to be in his wallet but nevermind that. It shows how the problem just doesn't affect walter but essentially the entire company is at risk at not having a cover for the last magazine.
As Walter's dreams become bigger and bigger, he seems to neglect the 'smaller' things such as his family. "Here I am a giant surrounded by ants! Ants who can't even understand what the giant is talking about,? (Hansberry 85). Walter has big ideals, but his methods of achieving his goals and ideals are somewhat irrational. Walter can be regarded as more concerned with becoming self-employed without really thinking about the consequences, which may be imposed on his family. Later in play, Walter learns that he needs to set his dreams aside for the sake of the
The film “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, which was converted to a movie from a short story, talks about the negative consequences of daydreaming. Walter, who is the protagonist of the movie, daydreams in his daily life frequently. He imagines extraordinary events and loses his connection with the world. This habit of Walter Mitty leads him into a couple of bad consequences. His colleagues make fun of him while Walter Mitty was daydreaming. For instance, his boss says, “Do you think, if I hit him with a paper clip, would he move?” (Stiller, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty) and throws a paper clip to him. This movie showed me that people cannot think properly and their relation with the real world disappears as they daydream. That’s why, they cannot notice what is going on around them, which is a negative
In the movie and short story, there is a man named Walter Mitty. Walter is a dreamer, a daydreamer. He dreams about being an important hero. Walter does this to escape from his boring, dull lifestyle.
One reason on why I would not want to eat lunch with Walter Mitty is because of the fact that he always gets daydreams triggered by things around him. For example say if I way to say yes and we
Walter begins to drink, stay away from home, and to constantly argue with his wife, Ruth. Walter's life is contrasted by the role of his recently widowed mother, who holds to more traditional values of acceptance of life's lot and of making the best of any situation. Walter Lee's "Mama" holds Walter's father up as an example of a man with pride and a man that, despite racial injustice in a dualistic society, worked hard to provide for his family. This adds to Walter's frustration. Walter now feels incapable and small in his mama's eyes.
Walter Mitty uses his fantasies to avoid his wife. Ferguson points out that Mr.Mitty’s dreams usually occur during or after one of his dreams(433). Walter falls into his dreams to escape his wife even though sometimes he
Sometimes when you are in a relationship, you start to wonder what your life would be like if you hadn't been with the person you are with if you aren't happy. In the short story by the author James Thurber called "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty", a man named Walter Mitty daydreams about having different lifestyles away from his controlling wife. The theme of the short story is that you can be whoever you want to be as long as you are yourself. They both show how Walter's daydreams relate to his real life and how he wishes his real life was different.
Mitty’s second daydream occurs after he drives past a hospital on his way to the parking lot, he thinks he is a famous surgeon, heroic character, who saves the day. Mitty is awakened from his daydream only to be told by the parking attendant that he is entering the parking lot the wrong way. In the story, The Strange Life of Walter Mitty, Walter Mitty struggles with an inferiority complex that has been developed from the belief that people were looking down on him. Even though it may be implied in the story that the people that Walter Mitty had interactions with were all looking down on him it is never truely stated therefore it is believed that Walter Mitty was just paranoid and assumed this. Since his inferiority complex and character prevents him from talking back and assuming a role of dominance he copes with this reality by daydreaming. The issue with his daydreaming is that he complelety leaves reality and puts whatever task he was doing on autopilot. In the first paragraph, Walter Mitty shows us one of his secret lives — these secret lives are more of a fantasy — as a navy captain while he battles a hurricane with his crew.

Do you ever have a moment where you just sit there and daydream? If you ask me it can be pretty dangerous if you do it at the wrong time! So you should watch what you do so you won't be like Walter Mitty. In the short story of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber there are a lot of differences and very little similarities, in my opinion i say the movie was way better.
” The 18-year-old girl dreams of attending college, and in her family, “no one in her family goes to college (“Where Dreams Come From”, stanza 2, line 7).” She wants to have a proper education and become a figure in the real world. Her family is sitting on the sidelines of civilization and she is sick of that fact. That household is aware of this; nonetheless, she still is not allowed to leave. Walter Mitty is no different. His wife is domineering and infuriating, as she constantly admonishes him and tells him he is doing everything incorrect. For instance, when Mitty accidentally speed up his Buick, his wife screeched at him that, “he was driving too fast (“Secret Life of Walter Mitty”, page 1, paragraph 2),” when he “was up to fifty-five km/hr. while knowing her comfort-level was forty-five km/hr.” She prohibits this poor soul from living his life by controlling his every-being than he does of his own body. He cannot accomplish his dream. His desire is not similar to the girl’s. He yearns of being heroic and the center of attention. However, he is the exact opposite and his wife frequently pushes him off the cliff of confidence, where his spirit is shattered. Not only that, he often questions her, “ If it ever occurs to her that he is sometimes thinking.” And she rubs it
Life is about finding yourself, each other, and being true to one’s self. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is an extremely original and creative story written by James Thurber.
