Just one vertical line, one horizontal, two little slashes and a circle; something simple in order to teach a child how to doodle a person. It’s not difficult and it’s nothing complex, just a few quick lines and a couple seconds later; a stickman. Not much dynamic and rather boring as viewed by others, but there are some things in life that are more than meets the eye. As Robert Coover takes us into the life of a stickman in his short story The Stickman, the symbolism behind this story shows the reader the true life possibilities of wanting to be more than what you are destined to be. A part of the human condition is a strong desire to fulfill the best things in life; popularity, wealth, power, success, etc. Usually most people are willing to do whatever it takes to achieve all of these “fancy” things that life has to offer. We want to put it all on the line, take risks, and never look back in order to live THAT lifestyle. While some rarely accomplish this, there are consequences for sacrificing what you have for something that isn’t good for you. Humans view their lives as dull and boring and we are constantly searching for something that is going to give us our next high; our next adrenaline rushing, palm sweating, heart racing feeling. We crave for something more because we don’t realize what we have right in front of us and sometimes it takes an epic downfall to have that epiphany. Our stickman is an ideal example of someone who executes his desires and pays the
Rehnquist would “often draft his own opinion and then tried to bring everyone around.”(Tobin 180)
That is a risk that few people take because they never want the responsibility of having to work for something. Life can only be lived by those who work hard for their achievements and follow through on their ideas and goals. It is the people who never work for anything that are unhappy with what they see when they look back at their lives because they have achieved nothing to be proud of. Just the fact that they tried to better themselves by living more provides a sense of fulfillment.
The central theme of the Contents of a Dead Man’s Pocket was that our life would be nothing if we don’t enjoy our life. Nowadays, many people long for money and success, and they would do everything to achieve their goals. I believe that it was not worthy for people to sacrifice too much to achieve success. This article deeply touches my heart and I feel like this story teaches me an unforgettable lesson.
Part of society is happy with their position in life; just being able to pay the bills, and take care of their family is what drives them.
These people are clueless as to how to enjoy and live a happy life, when the answer is right in front of them. We, humans needs to learn to be content with what we have instead of striving too far. Although someone advice you to strive for more than you have ever been and reach for the stars, it is important to know your limits. Some people’s stars can further and maybe even brighter, however, appreciating and being grateful for your own star, your body, yourself, and your life means you are one step closer towards happiness. Focusing on money, power, or fame alone can make you lose track of what truly matters to you, as well as cause you to harm others. Also, looking and comparing yourself with your neighbors are some examples of you leaning towards the wrong direction as it can lead to ill intents and evil thoughts, better yet, approach them with your best intentions, and you will be surprised with the result. People surrounding you can fill the holes and provide whatever your star is lacking. This is why happiness is important, you will not desire to hurt another human being when you are happy, relationship between one another will be even stronger and better, and more importantly, us humans, the top of every living creatures in this planet, can start focusing on what truly matters and begin
In order to get to the top, sometimes they lose their balance, and think about everything physically. They don't notice how their inner world becomes confused, from the directions they choose to go for desirable achievements. In addition to this, people pay more attention to material factors and lose their control to live life for better
Although each person is a unique individual, each person has a path to follow and each path holds the same fundamental principles at their core. Some paths are long and tiring, seeming hellish and fleeting to travel along, while other paths are easy and holds a clear ending result. For example, one man can be destined to inherit his father’s business while another man can be destined to revolutionize his country. While each route is different from each other, each paths holds the values of success and failure. At one point in each person’s life, they must defeat their own Goliath and become the king of their own destiny. In the novel From Failure to Promise -360 Degrees, Dr. Cleamon Moorer writes about his personal experience of “…traveling through the trees and the wilderness” (97) in order to reach his goals. In his novel, he describes his rocky hike, ridden with failure and doubt, to his ultimate success.
It is human nature to do things that are beneficial for us. Whether it is cheating in school, blaming our mistakes on others, or taking a shortcut on a task. We put ourselves above others when it comes to making a decision. If we succeed the first time, our greedy desires will keep coming back, and we will welcome them with open arms, until the desires consume us. Whether we commit to those ambitious desires or not exposes who we truly are.
We have an obsession with living a meaningful life. We perhaps all, even if unconsciously, strive to reach the level of self actualization on Maslow’s pyramid. However, this is a difficult task because we are always seemingly doubting our choices. As Descartes once said “we obsess with the perfect that we forget the good”. Technology only fuels our uncertainty about our life choices. We are constantly hit with waves of information and need to make divisive decision. Where once there was but two majors at Oxford, there are now hundreds. Career choices are limitless for example. As psychology tells us, when humans are faced with more choices, their will and assuredness in their choices decreases. We are faced with endless possibilities and having to choose one directions makes our growth stall because we are unsure of our commitments. Instead we become wary of the great questions we must answer in life. We become lost in, and perhaps even scared of our uncertain future, because our lives are

There is a slippery slope when it comes to the dark side and the bright side of desire. The dark side is explained by an example of desiring a nice sports car, but it happens to be too expensive for a 30,000 annual salary. The desire takes control and it becomes an unhealthy craving which transforms an individual into a stressed and mentally unstable individual. Finally, the car is bought with a lack of funds and then a
Humans are a crazy and confused species. They go their whole lives in search for more than what they have. They crave power and money as if that is what makes their heart beat. People could be brought up in a house where they will never want but they do. Societies in fight for their desires for more than what they need. Businesses hiding the truth to gain money. People are a strange yet curiously interesting species. It is interesting to watch as their emotions change from one to another as if they are connected in some way. They could feel happiness than sadness in seconds. It is sort of like how the characters in Othello change from happiness to fear or jealousy. Jealousy that grows like a disease when surrounded by happiness. Fear that is draw from a corner so deep within by the pain and jealousy brought on by unwanted thoughts. Jealousy is what created the fear but fear is what killed them all.
Part of this is the human desire for progress and that is good. However, not experiencing the joy of accomplishments steals the beauty of life from us! Don't believe this is true? Look at countless examples of people who have achieved tremendous results in their life - everything someone could desire - and they are miserable. Some of them have even considered,
In this age in which we live, success is generally measured by the amount of money you earn, or the amount of wealth or power or number of promotions you’ve accumulated. I find that the older I grow, the more I view the people who are most happy and content with their lives as the most successful. Rich, poor or in between, they’ve tended to treat life as a journey, not a final destination. They took that trip when they were 25 even though they really couldn’t afford it, they ordered the $55 bottle of wine with their filet because they knew that even though it was expensive it would enhance the meal so much more than water would. They took a chance on a start-up company, moved to Europe or Asia and experienced things that most people only dream about. If they managed to grow wealthy from the experience, so much the better. As long as moderation with most things is practiced, things won’t spin out of control.
Knowing you have a mate gives you a strange type of high. You know you'll never be able to hold him, or love him or even admire him from afar without getting slander from the whole pack and yet, you still somehow find yourself hoping that maybe this is the moment when you finally break out of the prison of an isolated life.
