In the opening paragraphs of the novel Back, author Henry Green expresses how one is affected by war through a soldier named Charley, who suffered greatly during the war. The novel, published in 1946, takes place one year after one of the most catastrophic events in history World War II in England and therefore expresses an antiwar tone throughout the passage. Using the third person limited point of view, Green gives an insight of how Charley losing the love of his life after the war completely altered his version of reality. Through the portrayal of Charley’s trauma, Henry Green demonstrates that war is a tragic experience that permanently changes one’s life because of different variables such as loss. . .in those roses gay and bright. . .hung their heads to droop, to grow stained, to die when their turn came” (Green 13-15). This quote characterizes generally how Charley’s life, represented by the rose, has shifted drastically. Charley first notices the roses that were radiating happiness and then notes the ones that were drooping, about to fall apart. A rose at first starts off radiating with a vibrant pop of color and slowly fades away as it rapidly starts to get stained and die when the time comes. Charley’s life can be compared to the rose since his life was unexpectedly stained by harsh reality of war and the sudden death of the love of his life. When Green states that the roses eventually ‘die when their turn came’, it contrasts Charley’s life. Because of how the war has affected Charley, he already feels dead so his turn really came when life for him went from being sunny to dark and depressing. Charley now views life as a having no purpose, which differs from his normal life before the war
