The United States is known as the wealthiest country on the planet, yet they are many poor people in this country that cannot afford to buy healthy food. While nutrition is a vital element of a healthy lifestyle, nutritious food is not equally available to all. This inequality is of great significance because increase in rates of obesity and related chronic diseases may be linked with poor diets, such as diabetes and heart disease are a major public concern. Moreover, there is evidence in literature that healthy diet greatly reduces the chances of some diseases and medical conditions that can shorten or lower quality of life. Consequently, gathering data on poor people was conceived as a way to highlight the issue and how to begin to solve the problem. This was one of the reasons why President Lyndon B. Johnson launched a “War on Poverty” intended to help end poverty in the United States. It was part of a larger legislative reform program known as the “Great Society”, that Johnson hoped would make the United States a more equitable and just country. Mayer asserted that according to the U.S Census Bureau, there were 46.7 million Americans living in poverty in 2014 or poverty rate of 14.8 percent. The picture was even bleaker for many ethnic and racial minorities. The same study found that 26.2 percent of African Americans (10.8 million people) and 23.6 percent of Hispanic Americans (13.1 million people) live in poverty. The study reported that 21.1 percent of Americans under the age of 18 lived in poverty (21). However, these numbers cannot truly capture the reality of a daily life for those living in poverty. Department of Agriculture in 2005 showed that 5.1 percent of all U.S did not have the food they wanted or needed because of access related problems. Access to healthy foods includes not just proximity to retail locations that offers these types of foods but also the variety, cost, and the quality of foods (U.S Department of Agriculture). Accessing healthy food is a challenge for many Americans particularly those living in a low income neighborhood. In hundreds of neighborhoods across the country, nutritious, affordable, and high quality food is out of reach. Research shows that people in low income communities walk outside their door to find no grocery store, farmers’ markets or other source of fresh foods. Instead they are bombarded by fast foods and convenience stores selling high fat, high sugar, and process foods. (Helmers and Dave 45- 67). The U.S Department of Agriculture 2009 “food dessert” study examines access to supermarkets and determined that 23.5 million people cannot access a supermarket within a mild of their home (U.S Department of Agriculture).A key concern for people who live in areas with limited access is that they rely in small grocery or convenience stores that may not carry all the foods needed for a healthy
