Was Hector An Epic Hero

Whether historians can prove or disprove an epic ten-year war, surviving myths give the modern day reader a look at Trojan War heroes from three thousand years ago. Surviving myths tell of many great battles and many great soldiers , but two warriors stand out as examples of epic heroes. The two warriors are Achilles of Greece and Hector of Troy. While both possess any notable epic hero characteristics, Hector is the better hero because risks death for the greater good of society; he has courage; and his life ends tragically. An epic hero is a narrative and a brave character. There are many qualities that readers consider for epic hero status. Hector demonstrates this characteristic in Edith's Hamilton's "The Trojan War," when he goes to see his wife Andromache before going back to battle and faces his son also. "He could not be a coward, he said. It was for him to fight always in the forefront of the battle" (157). Andromache asked Hector not to go back to battle but instead stay with her and their son. Hector knew he had no choice but to refuse to stay with his wife and son. Also, he knew his fate and the thought of leaving his wife and son alone troubled him the most. The next characteristic that Hector posses is courage. Hector shows his courage in Homer's "The Iliad," when he realized the end of his life was near. He said "This is the end. The gods are calling deathward... Death is near, and black, not at a distance, not to be evaded..." (71). It takes a lot of courage to accept the fact that you are going to die soon. Most people are in denial but Hector was not. He knew his fate from the beginning and continued to go to battle; he fought with every strength he had as if he was dying throughout the ten years of the
