Bloodshed, a Sign of Justification?
“Oh, no. It costs a lot more than your life. To murder innocent people?" says Peeta. "It costs everything you are.” (Collins 23). Murder is a very engrossing, interesting genre amongst many readers. That chill and shiver that goes down a someone’s back, as he or she reads about the blood-thirsty stalker. Or when the young little, harmless girl opens the door and sees something. But not all murder stories are not the same; this is shown clearly in the “The Most Dangerous Game”, written by Richard Connell. The author tells a story about a well-known hunter who gets shipwrecked, but who is enjoying the island. But that all turns upside down, when he experiences the true meaning of having fear when his life is at stake. Rainsford is ultimately justified in his killing of General Zaroff because he has saved the lives of many.

Sanger Rainsford, shows this very clearly as he takes the life of General Zaroff. He showed how cruel and barbaric General Zaroff really was. Before Rainsford thought he had found a fellow hunter until ‘“ Hunting? Good God, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder.”’ (63). Any normal person wouldn’t kill humans for just the thrill of it, he or she would have a purpose. But that is not who Zaroff is. He wants an animal that can reason and challenge by hunting, and the only animal eligible for that would be a human. Zaroff is a savage sadist who eyes twinkle when the hear the words murder and torture. But thanks to Rainsford, people don’t have to be scared to Ship - Trap Island. Instead of playing a game that will make you lose your head, a person can visit the island and live in the luxury for a
The harsh truth of island life reveals that Zaroff’s idea of civilization includes personal pleasure derived from murder .Zaroff explains his “game.” Zaroff has become bored with hunting because the animals do not provide a challenge for him, so hunts the only animal that can think and reason—man (Connell 74).He believes that he deserves the challenge, so it is morally right to hunt men. This is not civilized behavior. It is murder. He tries explains why it is right. “‘If I wish to hunt, why should I not? I hunt the scum of the earth—[…]’”(Connell 75).Zaroff believes that his social status and wealth give him the right to kill those in lower classes. This
A man gets hunted by another man on the deserted Ship-Trap Island in the middle of the Caribbean. Rainsford, the protagonist in “The Most Dangerous Game”, a short story written by Richard Connell, gets hunted by General Zaroff. Rainsford abounds with fear, making him crazy. General Zaroff’s arrogance causes him to feel that he possesses the right to hunt the people he captures. His arrogance causes him to commit gruesome things; in this case, murder. Prior to becoming another man’s prey, Rainsford feels that animals have no feelings, but he sympathizes for animals being hunted after he himself becomes prey. His feelings and opinions transform after this experience. “The Most Dangerous Game” consists of three central themes: fear makes an individual crazy, arrogance causes hurtful actions, and some experiences have the potential to alter an individual’s opinion.
“The Most Dangerous Game”,by Richard Connell is a short story about sanger Rainsford, an expert hunter. Rainsford falls off a yacht and ends up on “Ship Trap Island”,then is introduced to General Zaroff, who is also an expert hunter.Rainsford and General Zaroff talk about the game, and how it’s all about capital hunting. Rainsford finds out that the General stalks up the Island by trapping sailors and hunting them. In this paper, the characters of Sanger Rainsford and General Zaroff will be compared, but their differences will also be discussed.
In the short story ”The Most Dangerous Game”, Rainsford was justified in killing General Zaroff. General Zaroff was a hunter who lived on an isolated island where he hunted stranded humans. Rainsford was also a hunter, who had been stranded on the island. General Zaroff intended to hunt Rainsford, which lead to Rainsford effort to survive. The only way for Rainsford to survive was to kill General Zaroff.
When Rainsford first arrives on the island, General Zaroff asks him to hunt and explains the unusual nature of his prey. Rainsford agrees to hunting with Zaroff. Rainsford really likes hunting and he knows what to do so he doesn’t need Zaroffs help. The reason why Rainsford doesn’t need Zaroffs help is because Rainsford knows more about hunting then Zaroff does, that’s probably why Zaroff is asking for Rainsfords help. Zaroff likes hunting for human, but there isn’t a lot of human on that island most of the things on the island are animals. Rainsford only agreed to help Zaroff because that’s the only way off the island and Rainsford doesn’t want to stay on the island. He wants to get off. Well another way he can get off of the island is by
(TS) In “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the main antagonist named Zarkoff practices something so evil, that when a man from mainstream society witnesses it, he views it as sinister. This short story follows an experienced hunter named Rainsford who becomes stranded on a deserted island where he becomes hunted by a character named Zaroff. However, by remaining calm in this bizarre and dangerous circumstance, Rainsford outwits the experienced Zaroff using traps and eventually kills him. However, what caused Zaroff to commit something so unimaginably sinister, that even a stolid hunter like Rainsford gapes at its insidiousness. (CD) When Zaroff first introduces himself to Rainsford at the start of the story he describes himself as an avid hunter who just couldn’t find any excitement in hunting animals
When contrasting to “The Most Dangerous Game”, General Zaroff hunts men like Rainsford for pleasure, not for revenge. Another conflict is how the main characters started out in the stories. “He lunged for it; a short, hoarse cry came from his lips as he realized he had reached too far and had lost his balance” (Connell 5). This citation was when Rainsford heard gunshots from afar. His curiosity got the better of him, so he went to check it out.
Rainsford responds by saying, “‘Hunting? Great Guns, General Zaroff, what you speak of is murder’” (Connell 12). Rainsford confronts Zaroff about his game he has created and tells him that it’s murder, and nothing but murder, to go hunt people like that.
“He knew his pursuer was coming; he heard the padding sound of feet on the soft earth… (Connell 32)” The Most Dangerous Game is a story full of adventures and seems to always have the reader on edge. Richard Connell’s story is filled with the theme of ‘will.’ This book is also full of plot twists and makes one mesmerized page by page wanting to know what happens to Rainsford. It also lets the reader to question what happens at the end and it allows the reader to make connections with real life, archetypes, and other literature. The Most Dangerous Game is a compelling hunt full of violence, action, and the theme of ‘will’ in the hunt of a man by a man.
The Most Dangerous Game In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, it explains the dangers of being hunted along with a few life lessons. It also has different times of conflict in it. One is the external conflict between Rainsford being hunted by Zaroff's, and internal with a life or death decision. “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a very twisted way to show life lessons.
“Hunting? What you speak of is murder.”The story is called “the most dangerous game”. The author's name is Richard Connell. The story I am writing about I am basing it around Rainsford, and he demonstrates adventurous, attentive, and clever skills. He mainly demonstrates these traits in the story against his “rival” Zaroff.
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the author, Richard Connell, does an outstanding job of portraying the bizarre adventure of an insane, however experienced hunter, General Zaroff. The protagonist, Rainsford, another experienced hunter from New York City, appears on General Zaroff’s island, explores, and eventually encounters with Zaroff. They introduce themselves, settle down, and begin to talk. During the talk with the general, Rainsford soon learns that the General was not only a hunter; but a murderer as well. Zaroff has lured and ceased many sailors to his island to play a game. Although, they did not hunt with the General, the General hunted them! Zaroff claimed that hunting “had become too easy”, therefore, hunting began
In the story Zaroff thinks it's not a problem if he kills the innocent people for fun. This mindset of his is openly showing signs of being a protagonist and going to do evil things throughout the story. In his conversation with Rainsford he clearly states that, "Life is for the strong, to be lived by the strong,, andif needs be, taken by the strong.” He states that he should be aloud to kill just because in his mind only the strong people in the world have the will to live. When Zaroff says "Thank you, I'm a hunter, not a murderer." Also states that he thinks that he's not a murderer he's simply a hunter. Which means in his way of thinking or the way he looks at it what he's doing is not wrong he's hunting them, trying to figure out whose strong and who is not. He decides to hunt humans because he says there the only match for him no other animal is enjoyable for him to hunt. He has the sense of superiority that humans were the only thing left. Zaroff then states “The weak of the world were put here to give the strong pleasure.” He thinks his actions are justifiable and that that's what the weak people are here for to give the more stronger and equip people pleasure. Zaroff then says “I am strong. Why should I not use my gift? If I wish to hunt, why should I not?” In his mind since he is a good strong hunter why should not he be able to hunt he calls this a gift and takes a lot of pride in it. This is another statement he says showing he thinks what he is doing is good, eliminating what he says “scum of the earth” so the strong are the ones to live.
Have you ever been hunted down by a psychopath war general, rabid pack of dogs, and a giant mute knouter named Ivan, and escaped? “The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell, is about a man named Rainsford who gets stranded on an island with an insane head honcho on a small, isolated island in the Caribbean sea. Behind every work of literature, are literary elements that make it successful. “The Most Dangerous Game” is successful due to descriptive imagery, suspenseful plot, and ability to get to the point.
General Zaroff states, “ Be a realist. The world is made up of two classes- the hunters and the huntees. Luckily, you and I are hunters.” ( pg 49) In this quote General Zaroff doesn’t think of hunting as a sport but as a correlation straight to real life. The quote shows that General Zaroff has an incredibly disgusting way of looking at life and everybody in it. General Zaroff’s insanity is shown because he think of everything besides himself as huntees and this shows he is a murderer. “ I hunt the scum of the earth- sailors from tramp ships, lascars, blacks, chinese, and mongrels.”( pg 49) This quote is saying that General Zaroff thinks that murder is a game, and he doesn’t feel bad about killing anyone of his hunts. This tells us that hunting/killing humans is a normal hobby for him and he does it often. The quote shows that General Zaroff’s mind is unstable and his thoughts are very distasteful. “ This is why I use them. It gives me pleasure. They can reason, after a fashion.” ( pg 50) General Zaroff is basically saying that he likes using humans for the hunt because it gives him pleasure. He is unbothered at the fact he is taking a human life away for a exhilarating game. When he says killing people because it brings him pleasure since they try to reason with him, but he puts himself in a position where he looks insane and murderous. It shows General Zaroff’s insane way of thinking and his thoughts on
