For the first major writing assignment I chose to write about how washing hands affects moral judgment. The main claim the popular press article was presenting was washing hands affects moral judgment. I said it was not valid because it did not provide enough information to prove it. After reading the research article I can now say that it is reliable and valid. The research article had more information and background to back up the theory. It goes more in depth on the experiments and the data collected. The overall claims are partially similar in both articles, but not entirely. In the press article, the main claim is washing hands does affect moral judgment. In the research article, cleanliness reduces moral judgment. The press article is
Here I also stated if my paper had that convention and if they had any variation in a research paper regarding to Writing in the Health Sciences. This helped me write my paper because we were to describe each convention in our genre analysis so it gave me a start. It also helped me analyze the effectiveness of the genre which was step 4 in our paper. Here in step 4 I think was my most difficult part in the paper because after gaining your input on that you should not say “I believe” I understand why it sounds more confident. I will now write my ideas as such, but then when proofreading go back and delete it because it sounds better stating why x causes y.
In brief, chapter 4 of The Longman Writer by Judith Nadell and John Lang taught the reader how to support the thesis using evidence. As an addition to chapter 3 “Identifying a Thesis”, chapter 4 emphasizes the importance of supporting the central idea by using enough evidence to convince the reader. Forms of evidence include “examples, facts, details, statistics, personal observation” (41) or anything that furthers the reader’s understanding. The evidence used should achieve three task, which are to justify how you (as the writer) feel, interest the reader, and paint a clear picture. By the same token, all evidence should follow certain characteristics, being: relevant, specific, an adequate amount of support, dramatic enough to alter reader’s feelings to your own, accurate, representative (or relatable), and genuine documentation (articles, encyclopedias, etc.) (45). For the most part, Chapter 4 conduces effective writing with evidence.
Research types of writings at college helped me strengthen my writing skills because as I started to research on a topic, not only I learned more in depth, but also learned how to draw further connections outside of the course(class). I want to improve my writings in making correct connections and organizing ideas. Sometimes, I misunderstand the readings and end up making the wrong connections. In fact, my ideas are all over the place whenever I try to make connections, which does not clearly show that I have understood the assignment. These mistakes often led to downside of my grades. The most useful advice I received that helped me improve my writing is that “the word ‘writing’ actually means to put things together, so don’t be afraid of express your opinions in your writing your opinion.” This encourage me not to be afraid of writing and expressing my opinions.
When I discovered that my English class had to do a Research Paper, I became horrified. I thought students only did this when they were finishing graduate school not when they were starting their first year in college. All I knew about research papers was that there is an overwhelming amount of research to do. In my efforts to complete this obstacle and not bore myself to sleep with researching, I wanted to do an interesting topic, but I had no idea where to begin. I spent hours going through a great number of subjects and people, but once I found topic remotely interesting, I could not find much information on the Library of Congress website. Therefore, I decided to choose one word that would hopefully lead me to an interesting topic. I
In Honors English III, Mrs. Bryce assigned the class a research project. Although we were allowed to work in groups, all of the writing portions were expected to be done individually. We were allowed do to research on any topic that we wanted. Unlike most papers we had written, this paper would be written in APA format. Some of the work would be done in class, such as the Introduction and Literature Review. However, most of it was expected to be done outside of school. Some additional requirements was that we had a minimum of three data collection sources and three findings from them.
"Helping Student Use Textual Source Persuasively" by Maragret Kantz, is a research about the mistakes most of us students make when researching for a paper. "We need a theory-based explanation, one grounded in the findings of the published research on the nature and reasons for our students ' problems with writing persuasive researched papers. To understand how to teach students to write such papers, we also need a better understanding of the demands of synthesis tasks." Like most students like to state the facts given to us by published articles and not finding out the "true" facts of the research. In her research she introduced Shirley. A highly educated sophomore. She comes from an educated family with great reading and writing skills. Shirley wrote a research paper on the Battle of Agincourt. While she did her research and only wrote about the so called fact/truth, she did not receive the academic grade she thought she would since her facts were there. She then presented her concern with her friend Alice. While Shirley defended her sources Alice states "You 're dealing with facts, so there aren 't too many choices. If you want to say something original you either have to talk about the sources or talk about the material..." This would keep Shirley narrative structure of her research paper but also give her an "argument and purpose". There are three causes Kantz states "1) Many students like Shirley misunderstand sources because they read them as stories. 2) Many students
This semester I wrote two major papers in English class, the first was a text analysis about the novella Anthem, and the second an argument paper about a subject that each student was free to choose. The textual analysis essay asked me to explain exactly what Ayn Rand, the author of Anthem believed and communicated with her novel and how these beliefs were shaped by her childhood. Each paper also included a summary of the text and cited some arguments from individuals who were against Rand’s beliefs. The argument paper required that I pick something they felt passionate about and argue for or against it, with detailed reasons, strong support from experts, and a place to recognize and refute people who felt differently. These essays were used
The article assignment requirements are to help everyone relate what we are learning to what is now happening in the real world. Reviewing a current article will allow us to learn what we may face in our future jobs once we graduate. Open ended questions help start discussion between classmates and ongoing participation. Avoidance of broad topics assists everyone to stay on the same track during the discussion. Using a broad topic, will cause mini discussions on various topics instead of an in-depth discussion. Opinionated questions should be avoided to ensure the discussion is based on factual details.
The text type I have chosen was a research paper. In this research I discussed the different individual problems within the issue itself. I have chosen to protest against puppy mills as it is something I am very passionate about and having two dogs myself has majorly influenced my opinion on this topic. I feel that puppy mills are extremely cruel and should no longer be operating anywhere in the world. This is why I have tried persuading the audience to understand the issue better through the information in this paper.
Taking English 1302 with Texas Tech University has been a highly rewarding experience. This class focuses on literature reviews and researched arguments, but when I signed up for this class I did not know the difference between the two. Now I know that literature reviews use sources to inform the reader about current studies on a topic, while researched arguments use sources to support the author’s claim and persuade the reader. During this class I have learned how to write a literature review/ researched argument as well as many mechanics related to general writing.
My academic writing has greatly improved. I now make an active effort to use a thesaurus to vary my language. I also incorporate more transitional phrases to create a better flow in my essays. I organize my paragraphs to make sure the information and supporting evidences flows well. Even though I understood my claims and thesis needed to be supported by credible sources I analyze who and where the source was published. Specifically, the class discussion in the response to videos we watched two videos about high fructose corn syrup. I stated,” The first video, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) – ‘Party’ TV original commercial, is an advertisement made by The Corn Refiners Association”. I acknowledged that the first video was made by an association that could have biased opinions about high fructose corn syrup. By acknowledging where the source came from I demonstrate that if this video was used for evidence for safe fructose consumption it would not be a credible source because of its ties to the corn association.
While writing this paper, I attempted to follow the forms and models put forth in the research papers we read in class during this unit. It was helpful to have something to follow while writing this report because I focused more on the “how” and “why” instead of the “what” of the research report structure. Overall, I found that this paper was much more organized than my last and I hope that this also improved the quality of my writing.
One of my strengths is ideas and evidence. I have real statistics and importance in my points. This ads to the clarity of the essay. Ideas provide a basis for the essay to grow on. I wrote down that “50% of car crashes happen because of distracted drivers on their phones” and I also wrote that “studies show that video games increase reaction time but decrease
The topic I want to covered in my essay for college-level writing is using appropriate language and why this is important in college writing. In my essay, I want to explain and highlight the reason why using certain language in your college can make a huge difference, when it comes down to the audience you are trying to reach and also inform about the topic. I have some idea’s and also evidence for my essay but I don’t have a lot of information, so I think I need to do more research and gather more evidence to support my points. I want my focus to be in these three segments; the first focus is why using appropriate language allows your audience interested in your topic, the second focus is why using appropriate language helps your readers
To write a good research paper, there is a need to be specific about the topic. The content in the topic must be specific, clear n short. The content should make an impact on the mind of the readers. Following are the ten steps which should be considered while writing a good research paper.
