As the triumphant arc of George Washington stands proudly in the center of the park it is surrounded by a history of death. One of the surrounding buildings now housing New York University students was once the stage of a tragic fire, the fountain in which the children are playing in lays over mass graves and the large proud elm tree at the northeast corner of the park was once the final destination of those condemned to die. This history is one of sadness but the city of New York and the park itself have been able to overcome this history and become the laugh filled recreation area it is today.
During the Revolutionary War the area was used to execute those accused of treason. A large looming elm tree that still stands in the northwest corner of the park has been reported to have been the site of hundreds of public executions during this time period. After the United States won its independence from Britain the area which would become Washington Square Park was taken from the English and Dutch land owners residing in the area. The area was then transformed into a Potters

Mayor Philip Hone allowed the cities Seventh Military Regiment to expand the area, create pathways and plant grass in the new park (Moke 2012). After this transformation the once burial ground and the purpose of the large elm tree began to be lost to history due to attempts to beautify the area and the wealthy moved into the area. However creating a park would not stop the horrible history that plagued the area. On March 25th 1911 a fire broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory located directly next to Washington Square Park. In eighteen minutes one hundred and forty six people, mostly young immigrant women who worked in the factory, were dead (Cornell University). All of this dark history has been hidden from the visiting public in order to maintain a appearance of serenity of the

Comerica Park can hold 52,416 fans in it. Over the years Comerica Park has changed a lot over the years. The United States is a nation of many monuments, historic places, and structures that represent our history both good and bad. One place that tends to be overlooked is Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C. It was here that one of the most horrific events in American history had happened, the assassination of our 16th president. This is why Ford’s theater is one of the most interesting places in American history.
There have been many memorials constructed in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The 9/11 Memorial Plaza and 9/11 Memorial Museum are located at Ground Zero. There are 16 acres at the World Trade Center, and the plaza is an eight-acre park that contains approximately 400 white oak trees and the largest manmade waterfalls in the United States. Each pool contains a waterfall, and each pool is one-acre in size. The names of each person who passed away in both the terrorist attacks on February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001 are engraved around the memorial pools in bronze. On the plaza there is also a tree that is known as “The Survivor Tree.” It gained the name of “The Survivor Tree” when the tree was discovered severely damaged after September 11, and was removed from the rubble and given to the New York City Parks and Recreation Department to take care of it. The special tree recovered and rehabilitated, and was then placed back on the memorial in 2011. The tree still stands there today, as a reminder of resilience and survival. The museum contains exhibits, archives and artifacts, while also honoring not only those who passed away, but also those who survived the September 11 terrorist

One day the park was closed it was tragic. It was under construction, but they could not see what the workers were building.
This is my character narrative for George Washington. In this essay I will be covering his childhood, his family, what he is known for and his most notable achievements. I will also be talking about the modern day version of George Washington. I will picking someone who has the same personality, and maybe someone who has similar achievements, and lifestyle.
This website discusses and shows pictures of 16 of Chicago’s greatest secret gardens and park spaces. Chicago’s motto is “Urbs in Horto” which means “City in a Garden”. Even though Chicago is known for its skyscrapers our landscape architecture is on the rise in our city. There are many public spaces for people to enjoy all over the city. There are some located in familiar public place and some are in neighborhoods you might have never heard of. City Hall, South Garden at the Art Institute, and the winter garden at Harold Washington Library are just to name a few that made the list. One thing about all of them is they all represent Chicago in their own way.
It was a cold and breezy morning, the leaves were rustling on the concrete and I caught a glance at a park. Sadly, the park looked abandoned and the metal structures inside were rusty and seemed fragile, a fence surrounded the entire park, the park was gargantuan and I could only see what was nearest to me. Curiously, I wandered around the fence until I found an opening. Shortly, I found a tiny hole that bent outward and seemed to have been cut by something. Luckily, I was able to squeeze through the hole without difficulty. When I did make it through the other side, I ran into the park to explore, many of the architecture here seemed run-down and bland. Surprisingly, I found a sign marking the beginning of the park. “1940” was marked onto
