When I think of art I think of pretty pictures of landscapes and very famous works of art like the Mona Lisa and Starry Night. When I think of bad art I come up with random lines smashed together that the only thing that they resemble is my little brother’s crayon drawings. I would like to focus on two works of art, one is called Rattlesnake by Frederic Remington, and the other is Composition IV by Wassily Kandinsky. If you haven’t caught on I really like the bronze cowboy sculptures. Wassily kandinsky was born in Moscow Russia in 1866 and died in 1944. He went to an art school and was not just a painter but a theorist. From 1866 to 1896 Wassily painted many realistic art works, like Der Blaue Reiter, and Munich Schwabing with the church of St. Ursula, which was translated from German. In another one of his paintings ,The …show more content…
The man on the back is what I think to be a jockey because of his position on the back of the horse. When you watch a horse race, the jockeys sit almost on the withers of the horse keeping hands on the horse’s neck. This art seems semi abstract, because I can tell what it is and pull some details from the picture. Now back to Composition IV. Kandinsky explained what colors meant to him and the roll in his paintings, Green is a middle class attribute, self satisfied and without any strong feelings of happiness, passions, and joys. Yellow to show spiritual warmth, Blue with a cold effect. White shows total silence and opportunity, while black is the exact opposite, dark, nothing, and no possibility for anything. Composition IV contains
Alexander Kerensky had a remarkable career. He was born in Simbirsk on the Volga River on May 2, 1881. His father was a head schoolmaster. Kerensky trained and graduated as a lawyer. He went on to a legal practice in St. Petersburg where he specialized in defending cases that involved political offenses.
One of the last topics we discussed in class turned out to be a form of art that probably interests me more than almost every other type of art that we have discussed this entire semester. That form of art is the impressionist style of painting. I really love all the different brush strokes that form different images for different people. I also enjoy much of the images that the impressionists painted, because they are usually very relaxed and mellow images that put you into a comfortable place. The post-impressionist period, especially very early post-impressionist, is even better I think. I think it’s better because it is just a little more refined and puts more emphasis on the figure and form of different objects. Since I enjoyed the post-impressionist’s
In the year 1913, Kandinsky created the composition VII, which became one the most talked about painting of the century. A very interesting fact about Kandinsky is his devotion to colors. His painting’s meaning will be revealed if you know the color symbolism. Through the years 1918 to 1921, Kandinsky dedicated his time to learn more about form and color analyses.
In a world that has become immune to accepting all types of art, Marya Mannes believes we have lost our standards and ability to identify something as “good” or “bad”. In her essay, “How Do You Know It’s Good”, she discusses society’s tendency to accept everything out of fear of wrongly labelling something as being good or bad. She touches on various criteria to judge art, such as the artist’s purpose, skill and craftsmanship, originality, timelessness, as well as unity within a piece rather than chaos. She says that an individual must decide if something is good “on the basis of instinct, experience, and association” (Mannes). I believe that by using standards and the process of association, we will be able to judge what makes an art piece good in comparison to others. However, Mannes forces me to consider the difference between what may be appealing versus what is actually good, and when deciding which art we should accept, which is truly more important. I believe that “good” and “bad” are two ends of a large, subjective spectrum of grey area. It is possible for a piece of art to be good in some areas and bad in others, and if something does not live up to all of our standards, it does not necessarily mean it should be dismissed. Thus, I believe my personal standards for judging art are based on which my standards are largely based on the personal reaction evoked from a piece of art. Though I agree with Mannes’ standards to an extent, I believe that certain standards, such as evoking a personal response, can be more telling of if a piece of art is good as opposed to its timelessness, or the level of experience of an artist in his/her craft.
This painting parallels the ideals in the Romantic Hero down to the color of the horse. The painting has a very distinct setting, which seems to be fall because Wassily Kandinsky uses orange in his trees portraying that the seasons are changing and with a new season comes new challenges. In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain begins his journey at the end of fall and beginning of winter, Winter is harsh and brittle, the season tested Gawain’s courage and honor, like Sir Gawain the Blue Rider is trekking into the unknown season ahead of him. Blue Rider includes a man wearing a blue cape riding on the back of a white horse. Colors are a piece of symbolism, and in the painting the horse is white; white is considered a noble, heroic, and pure color because it represents a blank slate. Religion is especially Christianity is recognized as a sign of purity due to the Virgin Mary, Sir Gawain is a loyal Christian, praying in his times of need “... He prayed to [the] highest heaven. Let Mother Mary guide him.” Sir Gawain’s pureness to his religion is a trait that makes him a hero, like Gawain the horse is white as a symbol of purity and heroism, The painting and Sir Gawain’s characterization are one in the same, they both point out what it means to be a
Bright colors jumping at you asking for attention, images so real viewers can not tell the difference. These are the thoughts that came to my head as I gazed at two works of art by two Mexican artists at MoLAA museum of art . I visited two museums, Bowers Museum of cultural Art in the heart of Southern California and the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach for my report unfortunately I only liked the works in MoLAA and will talk about it through out my paper. I will talk about two Mexican artists Rafael Cauduro and David Alfaro Siqueros that caught my eye, and made me want to learn more of them and their approach to art. Siqueiros caught my eye and interest because according to his biography “no
Afremov contrasts color schemes and the robustness of the tree to mirror the personalities of the man in the painting. The most prominent element is the clashing colors of the trees on either side of the painting.
All of the men who are pictured in the painting are dressed in elaborate non-Western clothing, the greatest indication that the painting is resembling a scene from a different lifestyle and world. The figure to the front and left has his back facing towards the viewer, focusing intently on the game of chess that is taking place. His elbow juts out at the viewer indicated by Gérôme’s use of a brighter and lighter color to indicate a different plane of space being occupied. His white turban and white skirt are used to pull the viewers gaze in as both pieces of clothing are two of the brightest elements in the painting.
Wassily Kandinsky was a Russian-born artist, whose contributions to the world of modern art are innumerable. On an artistic level, Kandinsky's maturation process from representational art to abstract art is fascinating. From his earliest work, with an impressionistic flair, to his later work, which was pure abstraction, Kandinsky was an innovator and a genius. He bridged the gap between reality painting of earlier decades and the fantasy pastime of the twentieth century.
One painter’s style and artwork that caught my eye was Titian's The Flaying of Marsyas. The unique thing Titian did in The Flaying of Marsyas was portray the different views on what becoming a great artist was, the potential child, the young man not wanting to look at what risks becoming an artist can mean, and the old man questioning if he’s done enough. This is unique because all viewers can relate to either one of the four (fourth is of the great and accomplished Marsyas himself) views. The views
The shapes of the figures are sharply defined and the objects such as the table, book, and string instruments. There are diagonal rhythms throughout the painting in which it creates movement. The light source in the upper left allows the source light to have a more natural appearance throughout the painting. The shadows at the right-hand corner and the men wearing green in the middle contrast the main object with the most sources of lighting. The objects shadows and lighting create dimension and a vivid sense of more contrast. There are areas in the making with more contrast and the sharp contrast that creates movement in the painting. The shadows and the lighting throughout the painting show gradations and the highlights create more depth. Staring from the upper-left hand corner with the first figure of a gentleman wearing a hue of blue and yellow, the left side of his face and garment shows the source light in right above him. The source light above the
Many artists themselves are both musicians and painters, such as Kandinsky, Schoenberg, Leonardo da Vinci and extra. One of the great examples is Wassily Kandinsky. He is one of the representatives of Russian expressionism painter. He also was a man versed in music. He is a friend of expressionist music composer, Schoenberg. By listening to Schoenberg 's works, he felt "like a recklessly in front of the same lines in countless dance." Since Kandinsky
The art I chose isThe rape by René Magritte. I think this art should be censored because it is a condemnation to men, and it shows how a society of men view women. The image shows how the female sexuality is formed. In the image, the female eyes has been replaced by her breasts, her nose by her belly button, and her mouth by her pubis. I defined art as the skills and images created from a person's imagination and view about life. However, I do not think that this is art because it doesn't show a person's view about life, rather it shows how a person thinks about when he sees a man, and not all men think like this. This not only damages the lives of men, it also shows the way women are treated constantly, and how they are seen as people with
Avremov uses the cool colored man and the warm colored woman to grab and pull the corresponding colors schemes together in the center through the couple. The settings on either side of the painting stick to their specific color scheme. When Afremov swaps the trend in the center of the painting it creates the focal point. The couple has a man depicting the dark color on the left side of the painting instead of the right. This is where all the other dark blue colors are at in the painting. The same pattern is followed for the woman, she finds herself on the cool side of the painting instead of the warm side which corresponds with the color shown on her dress. This ties the people to their corresponding colors. It also helps depict their personalities through the corresponding colors. Like the woman having the orange-red color and it being connected to the idea of her personality being outgoing and friendly. This is proven by her connection with the abundant trees and lights. There is also a connection with the dark colors on the man and the right side of the painting. This connection is that the dark colors create an idea that he is sad and depressed. This is depicted through not only the colors but also through the sole dying tree and the lights. It also gives the idea that even though these two people are different in their personalities and lives, they somehow found a way to connect to each other. These connections are seen in the actions they display towards one another. They are close together as well as linking arms. This gives the viewer a picture of how close they are because of their physical positions. They are
The first art work I chose was a piece done from Diego Rivera in which Diego’s interest at the time of the art work was about Cubism. Diego Rivera’s painting, Portrait of Adolfo Maugard, oil on canvas relates to Commentary as one of the functions of Art. In figure one of the art work, the main focus of the painting appears to be the person he painted and what surrounds the person. Rivera’s portrait was of Adolfo Best Maugard. Although the focus appears to be Maugard, the painting is not one point perspective. What surrounds Maugard is also important in the work as the surrounding expresses perhaps a certain time in which Rivera wanted to show. There is straight and perpendicular lines that create an overpass where Maugard is standing. Figure one Diego uses modern colors like: red, orange, yellow, green, and blue/gray. The geometric shapes for the the buildings, ferris wheel, and the train. He also uses a light tone of
