In “The Joy Luck Club” we learn how Waverly’s mother is constantly pressuring waverly to play chess because it is best for her since she is so superb at the game. On the other hand, even though Waverly knew she was a really good chess player. She made the decision to quit ,but when she consulted with her mother she asked why if she was such a good player and didn't work this hard to stop. Waverly then quit and her mother seemed not to care. This created a huge divide between the two of them,”I refused to speak and waited for her to come to me”(188).
