Reading log 3 1.10 AS 90854 Jonathan Low Title: Wavin’ flag Author: K’naan Date completed: March 2015 Type of text: Song lyrics “Wavin’ flag”, is a song written by many famous songwriters including Bruno Mars and David Guetta. This song was sung by K’naan and is a very inspiring song. “Wavin’ flag”, was the theme song for the Fifa 2010 football world cup. The main ideas in the song “Wavin’ flag”, by K’naan are mostly pride and getting up when you get pushed down. This song has a strong meaning of backing up in what you believe in and to represent you, your family, or even your country in a manner that you would be proud of. This is shown when the author says, “Make us feel proud”. I believe that the author wants to tell the reader that no …show more content…
This demonstrates that if anybody does something does something spectacular, for example Martin Luther King Jr, lots and lots of people will get behind you, respect you and honour you. Martin Luther King stood up for what was right and I believe that many people would like to do that, but they are in economical strife, just like in Africa. Some people in Africa may want to put their word out there that they need help, but they don’t have the resources to tell …show more content…
Another thing that I think that the author is trying to say in the text is that when you get older, you will become very wise and people will start to respect you much more. This is shown when the author says, “When I get older I will be stronger, they’ll call me freedom just like a wavin’ flag.” There were many unusual aspects in the text. One of the unusual aspects was that the mood changed a lot from being proud to people trying to betray you and deceive you. An example of this is when the author says, “Love is the answer, that’s what they say, But look how they treat us, make us believers, We fight their battles, then they deceive us.” A feature of this text that I found effective was that the song had so much meaning and it was very inspiring. This is shown when the author says, “And everybody will be singing it, and you and I will be singing it, and we all will be singing it.” This shows that the author is trying to tell the listener that anything is possible and anybody can achieve greatness. I agree with this quote as it shows and tells everyone that they could become influencial to many
What does the American Flag mean to me? It means freedom, respect, equal right, faith and hope. Soldiers help protect this country, they fight for us, they give up everything for us. People don’t know how important the flag is. The flag means our country’s freedom. When I look up at the flag, I see people, not just any people, the great Americans that have fought for this country.
After explaining Martin Luther King’s death, Kennedy tells the audience that they can act “as Martin Luther King did” by being compassionate and understanding of one another in a time of civil strife, which draws upon King’s reputation as a famous civil rights leader and practitioner of peaceful protest to influence the audience into practicing that same peaceful conduct (Kennedy). This appeal to King’s credibility is persuasive because it causes listeners to contemplate the actions of a familiar and trustworthy individual as well as an influential leader which leads to them desiring to follow in King’s footsteps and conduct themselves as he would with compassion and empathy for the entirety of mankind. In this section of the speech, Kennedy uses a hopeful tone to inspire the audience that despite the mournful attitude that will inevitably follow King’s death, there is still a chance for a bright future in which people are understanding and there is less discrimination if people behave following King’s example. Kennedy states that “we can make an effort” to “replace that
When songwriters begin to pen the lyrics of a song, I believe their ultimate goal is to transcend time in hopes of reaching listeners for generations to come. J.R. Cash, professionally known as Johnny Cash, wrote a song that did just that. “Ragged Old Flag” is a patriotic song that speaks to every generation. Written in 1974, “Ragged Old Flag” was meant to tell the story of our country. Johnny Cash recorded “Ragged Old Flag” live at the House of Cash. Cash wanted the song to be recorded live because it was raw, untouched, and unapologetically real. The basis of this analysis is to show how patriotism spans generations, but also why a song such as, “Ragged Old Flag” is an important part of patriotism in the United States of America.
Despite not single handedly ending prejudice with a small revolution, even the most seemingly small results provide advancement in the road toward social and systematic innovation. One of these results includes educating others and bringing awareness to the situation and problem at hand, so that citizens would ‘not be on the side of the executioners’. An example of using peace to effectively spread a message that would not only have a huge effect on obliterating the national discrimination of its time but as well being honored and remembered for decades after would be Martin Luther King Jr’s iconic ‘I Have A Dream’ speech on August 28, 1963. A century after slavery was outlawed, and nevertheless African-Americans were still regarded as less by the white American government, who allowed discrimination, separation, and exclusion everywhere - schools, water fountains, buses - between the races to be legal. Being an African-American man himself, King would not tolerate this. Rather than succumbing to violent measures in order to get his message to end racial discrimination instead, he used words as his force and in doing so educated and inspired thousands to contribute toward attempting to make a change in the nation. People are the product of what they are taught - even the most obstinate can be influenced, especially during this time period and
Although the author’s statements have some merit, Keillor seems to be stereotyping today’s younger generation into one so entranced with their cellphones, that they are unable to simply know the lyrics to the National Anthem. This in an unsupported and in most cases, untrue statement. It was placed in the essay to support his later assertion which insists that the nation in general will no longer know the lyrics to the most common patriotic hymn. The author does not have the evidence to support the statement that one day, the feeling the National Anthem gives Americans will “vanish.” It is a very well known song that is sung before every sporting event, both national and local. Its powerful presence at these events is a representation of the important place the flag and song have in our society. At the local level, students are often asked to sing it, and they are required to have the lyrics memorized, or they may face humiliation. This supports the idea that the National Anthem will not likely be
Martin Luther King Jr. has been influential in multiple ways that have caused positive impacts in American society, and has gotten the attention of foreign countries to change their policies. When Martin was a child, he tried to kill himself by jumping out of his bedroom window when he had received the news of his grandmother's death. MLK’s speeches and writings guided the journey to breaking racial boundaries, desegregation and the decline of racism, enjoyed by modern generations.
We live in a world of over seven billion people, how can one person even make a dent? It may not always be the action itself, but the impact that it has on a person. Never forget, never again, the words that resound in one’s head when thinking of Elie Wiesel's speech for the Nobel Peace Prize. We can never forget the stories of the lost, gone, and the survivors, so that we do not repeat their mistakes. Elie Wiesel is a survivor of the Holocaust, World War II, and life’s brutalities. In his lifetime Elie Wiesel experienced discrimination because he was Jewish. He was sent to labor camps because he practiced a different religion. However, many people of the world today are discriminated against because they act or look a little different. The
The Star - Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key as he watched his fellow Americans stand strong in their darkest hour. For over twenty four hours Fort McHenry was bombarded by British Navy, but the American troops fought, and so did their families. The Americans rallied around the singular flag that stood high in the fort, and a flag that was a target for the British armada. They planned to destroy the flag to disrupt moral, but the Americans refused to let it fall. They used that singular flag as motivation, and motivation that eventually won them the battle. The flag still holds the same purpose today. To remember those who have fought, or are currently fighting in our armies. It also serves as a source of pride, motivation, and patriotism towards our country. Knowing what our flag means to our history and our country, we can’t possibly keep letting our countries source of pride be disrespected by those attempting to promote their own cause. Are nations athletes that choose to display their displeasure with our nation’s current state, and disrespect what our flag means for our country.
The flag used for the second song, Wishing You Were Here, is special and different than the other three flags. It is called a swing flag. This means that is has a shorter pole that is more flexible and bends easier
This song tells a story about the struggles an immigrant deals with in America and I think ending with this lyric leaves a lasting stand on listeners to keep fighting for what they want and to not give up. I also like that he took a character from a book to show that community and the human spirit will get through bad
As I listened to Martin Luther King, Jr. speak I was in awe. Of course I have heard about the most famous “I Have a Dream” speech, yet surprisingly I never once fully listened to it, till now. I knew that this speech was powerful, from others who have heard it before. Yet it was on another level, listening to it for myself. I was amazed in every way, and I must admit, it had me tearing up once I finished listening.
It was a glorious April 4th evening as Martin Luther King and hundreds of followers were gathering for a civil rights march. Many cheered on as the civil rights leader graciously out step on the second floor balcony of the Motel Lorraine. Roaring cheers rose from the crowd rose up as Martin Luther King stand there waving his arm with his heart warming smile waiting for the uprising taper off so he can continue with his speech. When suddenly a piercing blast broke the noise and the crowd’s cheerful spirit died. A cold chill went through all who were present fore in the back of their minds there was no doubt that their King had just been
That said, we should not forget that leadership and empowerment often strongly depend on mobilization. The fact that national leaders existed served to create role models that engendered a sense of unity and communality. As the media were very selective when it came to the coverage of local struggles, the attention that leaders like Martin Luther King and others received was important to force the real and imaginative ties that invigorated the struggles on the local level.
By using her own skills, the speaker shows that her people do have talents. In the last stanza, the speaker says “I am the dream and the hope of the slave.” After slavery was abolished, Black Americans had hope for the future. However, they soon realized: systemic oppression would keep them down. Nonetheless, the speaker still has hopes and dreams which are continued and pursued through herself. The poem does not only express the rising of the speaker alone, but also of the people she represents. Using the word “I” can also inspire those who are going through difficult situations. For example, someone who is being bullied is forced to repeat self-affirmations, which can make them feel more confident. The wording before the shift proves the same subject while deliberately avoiding direct repetition. No matter what, her strength will never subside, and readers should feel the same.
In “I Hear America Singing,” Walt Whitman’s message of the American identity is that it is diverse and proud. The fact the American identity is diverse is proven best in the first line, which states, “I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear.” In this line, the word “varied” proves that it is diverse because if something is varied it has a variety of things amassing it. The American identity being proud is proven by the line, “Each singing what belongs to him or her and to none else.” This line proves that the American identity is proud because it is saying that we celebrate what only we have. This celebration evinces that we are proud of what we gain by working.
