In this essay I'm going to be explaining why growing up in a negative environment doesn't mean you can't make it out of your environment. This essay was made using the book “We beat the street”. Paragraph 1 is based on the fact that if you want it, you can achieve it. Paragraph 2 is that you need to educate yourself so you're not making the same mistakes. Paragraph 3 is to surround yourself with positive people. Do you believe if you want something, you can get it? Well the book We beat the street is an example of how if you want it you can achieve it. The book is about three boys, Sampson, George and Rameck. They grew up on the streets of Newark, New Jersey. From an early age they knew violence, drugs and death. In fact, that was the normal
When F. Scott Fitzgerald published The Great Gatsby in 1925, it was impossible for him to predict that only four years later his story would be enacted in real-life during the Great Depression. There are many prophetic symbols in the novel that tie The Great Gatsby and the Great Depression together.
Throughout the article “The Code of the Streets,” Elijah Anderson explains the differences between “decent” and “street” people that can be applied to the approaches of social control, labeling, and social conflict theories when talking about the violence among inner cities due to cultural adaptations.
Be Patient. Sometimes you have to go through the worst to get the best. The Store is about how a young African American narrator, who does not seem like a “goal seeking animal,” but by the end, he has enrolled in Georgetown University. The narrator seems to triumph over negative and positive circumstances that often stifle a person to not succeed. In this paper I’m going to discuss how the positive circumstances kept him on the right track. How the negative circumstances affected him and how he triumphed over them.
Culture in urban communities, also referred to as inner-cities, are growing increasingly violent. In the article, The Code of the Streets by Elijah Anderson, he begins to take an in-depth look at the root of the evil. He deduces that economic factors, parenting and the troublesome environments largely influence the violent norms within this culture.
This tendency might make for psychological resilience, but it also makes it hard for Appalachians to look at themselves honestly” (Vance, 2016). This reference can be true with many of today’s youth who are stuck in poverty. These particular youth tend to look at issues from a different perspective. They do not want to stress on factors, which they little or no control of the situation. In their mind, they tend to block out and ignore problematic issue, which come their way. They hope the issues of drugs, alcohol, domestic violence, and poverty will eventually handle themselves and go away. The fact is they never go away, and the only way out of this cycle is education, a strong mind, and ultimately removal from the environment, which they grew up in. I know this cycle, and I have lived it. I know what it is to grow up like the author, because I can relate with him almost 100%. I know if it was not for the Army, I could have ended up just like everyone I know back in my hometown. It is hard to stay away from all the negative influences around an individual, but it is even harder not to repeat what was seen as a healthy relationship between a man a and a woman. This is where a strong mind is needed. An individual needs to take in all negative accounts and pledge to themselves not to let those same traits manifest in them, or they might also find themselves in an
In this paper, I plan to first describe the “Code of the Street” which is a term coined and a book written by Elijah Anderson. I would also summarize and describe two journal articles that test Anderson’s idea of the “Code of the Street” for a more definite explanation. I will tell how the two articles that I have chosen relates to some of the concepts that Anderson talked about in the book. I will then define general strain theory and social learning or differential association theory. Lastly, I will explain how general strain theory and social learning theory or differential association theory explain some of the behaviors that were seen by the individuals in the book published by Anderson. I will point out some of the individual’s behavior and demonstrate whether it may lead to crime or whether the behavior was learned in any way.
In life everyone will face periods of adversity, the real challenge is how we change from overcoming them. Adversity not only makes a person grow in strength but also in character. Horace, a Roman poet, stated, “adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” I agree with this completely, what he is implying is that when people are faced with tragedies that get in the way they can overcome them and, by doing this, they will grow to become a stronger person. This growth has been displayed in the growth of the “untouchables” in India, Oprah Winfrey, Jan Zakyo and the people who lived during the Great Depression.
The uneducated behavior of the East Chicago residents proved just how obnoxious they could be, I automatically knew I didn’t want to follow that path. East Chicago has shaped me into the person I am right now because I had to learn to make decisions for myself. Drugs, alcohol and gangs either gets you in a hospital or dead. The place I grew up in taught me to be mentally prepared for any obstacles I come across. I am determined to never be like the people I observe in my neighborhood, to strive and never give up. Everyday as I went home I saw the same people doing the same delinquency perpetually. My middle school peers either got pregnant or dropped out as soon as they made it into high school, I always tried to guide them towards the right choices because it hurt to see them struggle. However, I always saw school as an advantage to make it out of there and actually do something with my life. I strive my best to get good grades, eventually it payed off since I earned the privilege to become part of the National Honor Society when I was a sophomore. I am a strong confident woman, who is caring towards
Growing up in one of the most neglected zip codes of Miami, I have faced challenging obstacles all my life. These challenges were not only limited to financial worries, they included peer issues as well as moral ones. Growing up in a neighborhood where police lights and drug dealing were the norm taught me valuable life lessons that most people could never understand. I believe this upbringing has molded me into the person I am today, a person who sees hardships as a way to grow and excel, a person who sees life through a producer mindset, rather than a consumer one.
Challenges are something that is inevitable but also indispensable in our lives: some face illness, some face poverty, and some face the loss of loved ones… Every time after we went through bad days, when we look back, we can usually find out that all the effort we made is worthwhile and realize that we have changed a lot during the process. The book Personal Effects written by E. M. Kokie shows the process of the main character Matt managing to conquer difficulties in life of facing the death of his brother, having bad grades at school, and under the frequent violence from his dad. The book uses conflict, character development, and setting to convince the idea of the adverse situation is a chance to improve ourselves, which is important that when
Obstacles Provide Growth: Almost everyone has had a life changing experience, but how does it impact one’s way of thinking? Life experiences can shape values by providing vital life lessons to grow one’s character. The poem Mother to Son by Langston Hughes is about a mother telling the story of her life as reference to a crystal stair. Born Worker by Gary Soto is a short story about a young boy named Jose finding out his cousin’s true colors. From their life experiences, the mother learns that life isn’t simple, and that dreams aren’t easy to achieve, while Jose learns that people fall under two classes: hard workers and cheaters.
Judith Thompson’s Lion in the Streets demonstrates a society in which the primal instincts generally repressed in society are allowed to take control. These primal, animal impulses are the focus of Freud’s many theories of psychology. Thompson allows viewers to see into society driven by the cruel, violent, animal impulses, which Freud believes to be normally repressed, through Isobel. Having Isobel wander through the various scenes depicted in the play, viewers not only see the “Lion” present in the scenes Isobel experiences, but they also see Isobel’s character transform because of this journey through the suburban jungle. Throughout the play, Isobel changes from a lost little girl, to an avenger of justice and protection, to a kind forgiver
Everyone’s life is shaped and defined by differentiating variables, most of which they are unable to change. Race, gender, and socioeconomic class are just a few things that affect the entirety of a person’s life, starting from birth, to childhood, then adulthood, and finally, death. My life is constantly being shaped by who I am, and who I am is partially formed by all of the predetermined circumstances I am under. Gender, class, race, country of origin/immigration status, education, and so called college pathway, collectively combine with one another, influencing how I live my life and how other people see and treat me. The quotes from my chosen readings will further illustrate how these factors impact not only myself, but the rest of society.
Fire When hydrate (water and any other element or compound) evaporates and comes in contact with an ignition source in which the evaporating gas can be flammable can result to fire, in which the evaporation can be as a result of liquid expansion or vaporization. The resulting fire can lead to overpressure. Blocked outlet/discharge case During start-up most of the discharge outlet that were blocked has to be opened after maintenance and shutdown and if the control valve fails to open these outlets, it can lead to overpressure. Control valve failure When the control fails to open the blocked outlet or other important openings, it can lead to overpressure.
First,in ways, people overcome obstacles is keeping a positive attitude since when you have a positive attitude you are harder to discourage. An example of positive attitude while facing adversity would be in the text “A work in progress” where Aimee Mullin faces her adversity with humor like when she broke her wooden leg and while all the other people in that room were freaking out all she could think about was that her parents were going to kill her.I chose this example because out of all the stories we read in class about facing adversity Aimee Mullin struck me as the most positive about her obstacle. It’s important because it shows my point that with a positive attitude you don’t get discouraged as easily and like Aimee Mullin you can achieve whatever you wish no matter your adversity.Another example from “A work in progress” that shows positive attitude would be when Aimee Mullin got her new legs and was stating all the good qualities about her legs instead of being like oh I don’t this about them or
